Claims
- 1. An interface for coupling a snowboard boot to a snowboard binding base, the snowboard binding base having a toe end and a heel end and including a highback at the heel end thereof the snowboard binding base including a pair of first engagement members at the heel end thereof and a pair of second engagement members at the toe end thereof, the interface comprising:
an interface body having a toe end and a heel end that is free of a highback; a pair of first mating features supported at the heel end of the interface body, the pair of first mating features to be engaged by the pair of first engagement members; a pair of second mating features supported at the toe end of the interface body, the pair of second mating features to be engaged by the pair of second engagement members; and first and second straps supported by the interface body to secure the binding interface to the snowboard boot, the first strap being attached to the heel end of the interface body, the second strap being attached to the toe end of the interface body.
- 2. The interface according to claim 1, wherein the first strap includes an ankle strap constructed and arranged to extend across an ankle portion of the snowboard boot.
- 3. The interface according to claim 2, wherein the second strap includes a toe strap constructed and arranged to extend across a toe portion of the snowboard boot.
- 4. The interface according to claim 1, wherein each of the pair of first mating features has a first configuration and each of the pair of second mating features has a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.
- 5. The interface according to claim 4, wherein the pair of first mating features includes a pair of circular pins extending outwardly from opposite sides of the interface body.
- 6. The interface according to claim 5, wherein the pair of second mating features includes a pair of lugs extending outwardly from the opposing sides of the interface body.
- 7. The interface according to claim 6, wherein each of the pair of lugs includes an outward facing cam surface that is configured to wedge the pair of second engagement members to an open position.
- 8. The interface according to claim 7, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a top-to-bottom direction.
- 9. The interface according to claim 7, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a toe-to-heel direction.
- 10. The interface according to claim 1, wherein the pair of second mating features is adapted to automatically move the pair of second engagement members when the binding interface is stepped into and out of the snowboard binding base.
- 11. The interface according to claim 1, wherein the binding interface includes a pair of sidewalls on opposite sides of the interface body, each of the sidewalls extending from the toe end to the heel end of the interface body.
- 12. The interface according to claim 11, wherein the sidewalls are integrally formed with the interface body.
- 13. The interface according to claim 1, wherein the interface body includes a lower portion that is constructed and arranged to be mounted below at least a portion of the sole of the snowboard boot, the lower portion having an X-shaped configuration.
- 14. The interface according to claim 1, wherein the interface body includes a pair of first strap attachment points and a pair of second strap attachment points, the first strap being attached to the pair of first attachment points and the second strap being attached to the pair of second strap attachment points, the pair of first mating features being located adjacent the pair of first strap attachment points and the pair of second mating features being located adjacent the pair of second mating features.
- 15. An interface for coupling a snowboard boot to a snowboard binding base, the snowboard boot including a sole, the snowboard binding base having a toe end and a heel end and including at least one first engagement member and at least one second engagement member, the interface comprising:
an interface body including medial and lateral sides and front and rear edges extending between the medial and lateral sides, the front and rear edges being spaced apart a first distance in a longitudinal direction along a length of the interface body between the medial and lateral sides; at least one first mating feature supported by the interface body, the at least one first mating feature to be engaged by the first engagement member; at least one second mating feature supported by the interface body, the at least one second mating feature to be engaged by the second engagement member, the at least one second mating feature being spaced from the at least one first mating feature by a second distance in the longitudinal direction that is greater than the first distance; and at least one strap supported by the interface body to secure the binding interface to the snowboard boot.
- 16. The interface according to claim 15, wherein the at least one strap includes first and second straps supported by the interface body.
- 17. The interface according to claim 16, wherein the first strap includes an ankle strap supported at a heel end of the interface body, the ankle strap being adapted to extend across an ankle portion of the snowboard boot.
- 18. The interface according to claim 17, wherein the at least one first mating feature is supported at the heel end of the interface body.
- 19. The interface according to claim 18, wherein the second strap includes a toe strap supported at a toe end of the interface body, the toe strap being adapted to extend across a toe portion of the snowboard boot.
- 20. The interface according to claim 19, wherein the at least one second mating feature is supported at the toe end of the interface body.
- 21. The interface according to claim 15, wherein the at least one first mating feature has a first configuration and the at least one second mating feature has a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.
- 22. The interface according to claim 21, wherein the at least one first mating feature includes a pair of circular pins extending outwardly from the medial and lateral sides of the interface body.
- 23. The interface according to claim 22, wherein the at least one second mating feature includes a pair of lugs extending outwardly from the medial and lateral sides of the interface body.
- 24. The interface according to claim 23, wherein each of the pair of lugs includes an outward facing cam surface that is configured to wedge a pair of second engagement members to an open position.
- 25. The interface according to claim 24, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a top-to-bottom direction.
- 26. The interface according to claim 24, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a toe-to-heel direction.
- 27. The interface according to claim 23, wherein the pair of lugs is adapted to automatically move a pair of second engagement members when the binding interface is stepped into and out of the snowboard binding base.
- 28. The interface according to claim 15, wherein the binding interface includes a pair of sidewalls on the medial and lateral sides of the interface body, each of the sidewalls extending from the toe end to the heel end of the interface body.
- 29. The interface according to claim 28, wherein the sidewalls are integrally formed with the interface body.
- 30. The interface according to claim 15, wherein the interface body has an X-shaped configuration.
- 31. The interface according to claim 15, wherein each of the front and rear edges has a U-shaped configuration.
- 32. An interface for coupling a snowboard boot to a snowboard binding base, the snowboard boot including a sole, the snowboard binding base including at least one pair of engagement members, the interface comprising:
an interface body including a lower portion that is to be mounted below at least a portion of the sole of the snowboard boot, the lower portion having an X-shaped configuration; at least one pair of mating features supported by the interface body, the at least one pair of mating features to be engaged by the at least one pair of engagement members; and at least one strap supported by the interface body to secure the binding interface to the snowboard boot.
- 33. The interface according to claim 32, wherein the at least one strap includes first and second straps supported by the interface body.
- 34. The interface according to claim 33, wherein the first strap includes an ankle strap supported at a heel end of the interface body, the ankle strap being adapted to extend across an ankle portion of the snowboard boot.
- 35. The interface according to claim 34, wherein the second strap includes a toe strap supported at a toe end of the interface body, the toe strap being adapted to extend across a toe portion of the snowboard boot.
- 36. The interface according to claim 32, wherein the at least one pair of mating features includes a pair of first mating features to be engaged by a pair of first engagement members and a pair of second mating features to be engaged by a pair of second engagement members.
- 37. The interface according to claim 36, wherein each of the pair of first mating features has a first configuration and each of the pair of second mating features has a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.
- 38. The interface according to claim 37, wherein the pair of first mating features includes a pair of circular pins extending outwardly from opposite sides of the interface body.
- 39. The interface according to claim 38, wherein the pair of second mating features includes a pair of lugs extending outwardly from the opposite sides of the interface body.
- 40. The interface according to claim 39, wherein each of the pair of lugs includes an outward facing cam surface that is configured to wedge the pair of second engagement members to an open position.
- 41. The interface according to claim 40, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a top-to-bottom direction.
- 42. The interface according to claim 40, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a toe-to-heel direction.
- 43. The interface according to claim 39, wherein the pair of lugs is adapted to automatically move the pair of second engagement members when the binding interface is stepped into and out of the snowboard binding base.
- 44. The interface according to claim 32, wherein the binding interface includes a pair of sidewalls on medial and lateral sides of the interface body, each of the sidewalls extending from a toe end to a heel end of the interface body.
- 45. The interface according to claim 44, wherein the sidewalls are integrally formed with the interface body.
- 46. The interface according to claim 32, wherein the lower portion includes medial and lateral sides and front and rear edges extending between the medial and lateral sides, each of the front and rear edges having a U-shaped configuration.
- 47. An interface for coupling a snowboard boot to a snowboard binding base, the snowboard binding base including a highback at a heel end thereof, the snowboard binding base including a pair of first engagement members and a pair of second engagement members, the interface comprising:
an interface body including medial and lateral sides with first and second regions provided along each of the medial and lateral sides; a pair of first mating features to be engaged by the pair of first engagement members of the snowboard binding base, one each of the pair of first mating features being supported at the first regions along both the medial and lateral sides of the interface body; a pair of second mating features to be engaged by the pair of second engagement members of the snowboard binding base, one each of the pair of second mating features being supported at the second regions along both the medial and lateral sides of the interface body; and first and second straps constructed and arranged to extend across first and second portions of the snowboard boot, forward of a heel portion thereof, to secure the binding interface to the snowboard boot, the first strap being attached to the first regions of the interface body and the second strap being attached to the second regions of the interface body.
- 48. The interface according to claim 47, wherein the first strap includes an ankle strap constructed and arranged to extend across an ankle portion of the snowboard boot.
- 49. The interface according to claim 48, wherein the second strap includes a toe strap constructed and arranged to extend across a toe portion of the snowboard boot.
- 50. The interface according to claim 47, wherein each of the pair of first mating features has a first configuration and each of the pair of second mating features has a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.
- 51. The interface according to claim 50, wherein the pair of first mating features includes a pair of circular pins extending outwardly from the medial and lateral sides of the interface body.
- 52. The interface according to claim 51, wherein the pair of second mating features includes a pair of lugs extending outwardly from the medial and lateral sides of the interface body.
- 53. The interface according to claim 52, wherein each of the pair of lugs includes an outward facing cam surface that is configured to wedge the pair of second engagement members to an open position.
- 54. The interface according to claim 53, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a top-to-bottom direction.
- 55. The interface according to claim 53, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a toe-to-heel direction.
- 56. The interface according to claim 47, wherein the pair of second mating features is adapted to automatically move the pair of second engagement members when the binding interface is stepped into and out of the snowboard binding base.
- 57. The interface according to claim 47, wherein the binding interface includes a pair of sidewalls on opposite sides of the interface body, each of the sidewalls extending from the toe end to the heel end of the interface body.
- 58. The interface according to claim 57, wherein the sidewalls are integrally formed with the interface body.
- 59. The interface according to claim 47, wherein the interface body includes a lower portion that is constructed and arranged to be mounted below at least a portion of the sole of the snowboard boot, the lower portion having an X-shaped configuration.
- 60. The binding system according to claim 47, wherein the first region along each of the medial and lateral sides includes at least one first strap attachment point and the second region along each of the medial and lateral sides includes at least one second strap attachment point, the first and second straps being attached to the first and second strap attachment points, the first and second regions being disposed on opposite sides of a mid-point located midway between the first and second attachment points.
- 61. The binding system according to claim 47, wherein the first region along each of the medial and lateral sides includes at least one first strap attachment point and the second region along each of the medial and lateral sides includes at least one second strap attachment point, the first and second straps being attached to the first and second strap attachment points, the first and second strap attachment points being separated an overall distance in a longitudinal direction along the interface body, the first region including a first mating feature and the second region including a second mating feature, the first mating feature being separated a first distance in the longitudinal direction from the first strap attachment point and the second mating feature being separated a second distance in the longitudinal direction from the second strap attachment point, each of the first and second distances being within 50% of the overall distance.
- 62. The binding system according to claim 61, wherein at least one of the first and second distances is within 40% of the overall distance.
- 63. The binding system according to claim 62, wherein at least one of the first and second distances is within 30% of the overall distance.
- 64. The binding system according to claim 63, wherein the at least one of the first and second distances is within 20% of the overall distance.
- 65. The binding system according to claim 64, wherein the at least one of the first and second distances is within 10% of the overall distance.
- 66. An interface for coupling a snowboard boot to a snowboard binding base, the snowboard binding base having a toe end and a heel end and including a highback at the heel end thereof, the snowboard binding base including at least one pair of engagement members that is movable between an open position and a closed position, the interface comprising:
an interface body that is free of a highback; at least one pair of mating features supported by the interface body, the at least one pair of mating features being adapted to automatically move the at least one pair of engagement members to the open position, without manual actuation of the at least one pair of engagement members by a rider, when the interface body is stepped into and out of the snowboard binding base; and at least one strap supported by the interface body to secure the binding interface to the snowboard boot.
- 67. The interface according to claim 66, wherein the at least one strap includes first and second straps supported by the interface body.
- 68. The interface according to claim 67, wherein the first strap includes an ankle strap supported at a heel end of the interface body, the ankle strap being adapted to extend across an ankle portion of the snowboard boot.
- 69. The interface according to claim 68, wherein the second strap includes a toe strap supported at a toe end of the interface body, the toe strap being adapted to extend across a toe portion of the snowboard boot.
- 70. The interface according to claim 66, wherein the at least one pair of mating features includes a pair of first mating features to be engaged by a pair of first engagement members and a pair of second mating features to be engaged by a pair of second engagement members, the pair of second mating features being adapted to automatically move the pair of second engagement members to the open position.
- 71. The interface according to claim 70, wherein each of the pair of first mating features has a first configuration and each of the pair of second mating features has a second configuration that is different from the first configuration.
- 72. The interface according to claim 71, wherein the pair of first mating features includes a pair of circular pins extending outwardly from opposite sides of the interface body.
- 73. The interface according to claim 72, wherein the pair of second mating features includes a pair of lugs extending outwardly from the opposite sides of the interface body.
- 74. The interface according to claim 73, wherein each of the pair of lugs includes an outward facing cam surface that is configured to wedge the pair of second engagement members to an open position.
- 75. The interface according to claim 74, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a top-to-bottom direction.
- 76. The interface according to claim 74, wherein the cam surface is tapered in a toe-to-heel direction.
- 77. The interface according to claim 66, wherein the binding interface includes a pair of sidewalls on medial and lateral sides of the interface body, each of the sidewalls extending from a toe end to a heel end of the interface body.
- 78. The interface according to claim 77, wherein the sidewalls are integrally formed with the interface body.
- 79. The interface according to claim 66, wherein the lower portion includes medial and lateral sides and front and rear edges extending between the medial and lateral sides, each of the front and rear edges having a U-shaped configuration.
