Claims
- 1. An interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said rearview mirror comprising:
a casing, said casing including a reflective element; a storage space; and a dockable accessory, said dockable accessory being dockable in and removable from said storage space whereby said dockable accessory can be docked in said storage space and accessible to an occupant of the vehicle who can remove said dockable accessory from said storage space and use said dockable accessory independently of said rearview mirror assembly.
- 2. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 1, wherein said storage space is provided in said casing.
- 3. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 2, wherein said dockable accessory comprises a light assembly.
- 4. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 3, wherein said light assembly is dockable with said casing.
- 5. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 3, wherein said light assembly includes a light assembly housing and at least one light source positioned in said housing.
- 6. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 5, wherein said at least one light source is operable when said light assembly is removed from said storage space.
- 7. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 6, wherein said light assembly further includes a switch, said switch providing operation of said at least one light source.
- 8. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 5, wherein said casing includes an opening, said opening in communication with said storage space, said light source being actuatable when said light assembly is docked in said storage space whereby said light assembly is adapted to project light though said opening to provide a light source when said dockable accessory is docked in said storage space.
- 9. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 8, further comprising a reflector, said reflector positioned in said storage space for directing light from said light assembly through said opening when said light assembly is in said storage space and said light source is actuated.
- 10. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 8, wherein said casing includes a switch for actuating said light source of said light assembly when said light assembly is docked in said storage space to project light through said opening.
- 11. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 10, wherein said casing includes a cover over said opening.
- 12. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 11, wherein said cover comprises an optical lens for projecting light from said light assembly in a light pattern.
- 13. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 8, wherein said light assembly includes a light assembly voltage supply, said light source being electrically coupled to said light assembly voltage supply by a first drive circuit.
- 14. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 13, wherein said casing includes a second drive circuit, said second drive circuit being adapted to couple to a vehicle-based power supply and being adapted to recharge said light assembly voltage supply.
- 15. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 14, wherein said second drive circuit is adapted to electrically couple to said light source when said light assembly is docked in said storage space and decouple from said light source whereby said light source is actuated by said light assembly voltage supply independently of the vehicle-based power supply.
- 16. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 13, wherein said light assembly voltage supply comprises one of a battery and a capacitor.
- 17. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 15, wherein said first drive circuit includes a light assembly switch for actuating said light source when said light assembly is retrieved from said storage space.
- 18. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 17, wherein said second drive circuit is adapted to override said light assembly switch of said first drive circuit and actuate said light source in said light assembly when said light assembly is positioned in said storage space.
- 19. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 5, wherein said at least one light source comprises a solid state light source.
- 20. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 19, wherein said at least one light source comprises a plurality of solid state light sources.
- 21. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 20, wherein said plurality of solid state light sources comprise a plurality of light emitting diodes.
- 22. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 21, wherein at least two of said light emitting diodes are connected in series.
- 23. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 22, wherein said light emitting diodes comprise white light emitting diodes.
- 24. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 5, wherein said housing includes a cover, said cover comprising an optical lens.
- 25. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 16, wherein said light assembly voltage supply comprises a battery.
- 26. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 25, wherein said battery comprises a rechargeable battery, and said interior rearview mirror assembly including a recharge drive circuit adapted to recharge said rechargeable battery.
- 27. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 26, wherein said recharge circuit is adapted to recharge said battery when said light assembly is docked in said storage space.
- 28. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 26, wherein said housing includes at least three contacts, one of said contacts for coupling to ground, a second of said contacts for coupling to said recharge drive circuit, and a third of said contacts for coupling to a map light drive circuit.
- 29. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 28, wherein said contacts comprise conductive sockets, said casing including a corresponding plurality of conductive pins for coupling said conductive sockets to said recharge and map light drive circuits and ground.
- 30. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 29, wherein said conductive sockets are positioned at an insertion end of said light assembly whereby said conductive pins extend into and electrically couple to said conductive sockets when said light assembly is docked in said storage space.
- 31. An interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said rearview mirror assembly comprising:
a casing having a reflective element; a storage space providing storage capacity for holding at least one workpiece in a location accessible by an occupant of the vehicle whereby the workpiece can be inserted into or removed from said storage space for use by an occupant of the vehicle; and said storage space including a variable engagement element for engaging the workpiece whereby said storage space can hold a plurality of workpieces having varying dimensions.
- 32. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 31, wherein said variable engagement element comprises a resilient member.
- 33. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 32, wherein said resilient member comprises an elastomeric member, said elastomeric member compressing when a workpiece is inserted in said storage space thereby applying a spring-like force to the workpiece to hold the workpiece.
- 34. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 32, wherein said resilient member includes at least one flexible finger, said flexible finger deflecting and thereby applying a spring-like force to hold the workpiece when the workpiece is inserted into said storage space.
- 35. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 32, wherein said variable engagement element comprises a pair of spaced apart members for frictionally holding the workpiece therebetween.
- 36. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 35, wherein at least one of said spaced apart members includes a stepped surface defining a plurality of engagement surfaces for holding any one of a plurality of workpieces having a range of dimensions.
- 37. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 31, wherein said casing includes a bezel portion, said bezel portion including said storage space.
- 38. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 37, wherein said storage space is molded with said bezel portion.
- 39. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 31, wherein said reflective element comprises a variable reflectance reflective element.
- 40. An interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said mirror assembly comprising:
a reflective element; a casing, said reflective element located in said casing; and a casing support, said casing support including a mounting bracket for mounting said casing to a vehicle, one of said casing and said support including a storage space for holding at least one accessory therein, said accessory being movable to and from said storage space by an occupant of the vehicle for use of said accessory.
- 41. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 40, wherein said accessory comprises a pendent accessory.
- 42. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 41, wherein said pendent accessory includes an element comprising one of a reflective element and a display element.
- 43. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 42, wherein said pendent accessory further includes an accessory housing, said accessory housing supporting said element.
- 44. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 43, wherein said accessory housing is supported from said casing by a pendent support, said accessory housing being pivotally mounted to said pendent support to permit repositioning of said element about at least a vertical axis for viewing by an occupant of the vehicle.
- 45. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 42, wherein said element comprises a display element displaying information for an occupant of the vehicle.
- 46. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 45, wherein said display element includes a touch sensitive display element.
- 47. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 41, wherein said pendent accessory is pivotal from a viewing position to a storage position in said storage space.
- 48. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 47, wherein said casing includes a recessed portion, said recessed portion defining said storage space.
- 49. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 48, wherein said casing includes a bottom wall, said recessed portion being positioned at said bottom wall.
- 50. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 49, wherein said pendent accessory includes an accessory housing, said accessory housing having an outer surface generally following a contour of said casing when said pendent accessory is moved to said storage space.
- 51. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 40, wherein said storage space is integrally molded with said casing.
- 52. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 51, wherein said casing includes a casing wall, said storage space being integrally molded with said casing wall.
- 53. An interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle, said mirror assembly comprising:
a housing having a mirror casing and a support for mounting said mirror casing to a vehicle; and a retractable cord, said retractable cord for use by an occupant of the vehicle for coupling to an accessory, said retractable cord being adapted to couple an accessory to a vehicle system via said housing to provide a link between the accessory and the vehicle system.
- 54. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 53, wherein said retractable cord includes a coupler for coupling to an accessory.
- 55. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 54, wherein said coupler is adapted for coupling to one of a phone, a computer, and fax machine.
- 56. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 54, wherein said housing includes a storage space, said retractable cord retractable into and extendable from said storage space.
- 57. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 56, wherein said storage comprises a first storage space, said casing including a recessed portion, said recessed portion defining a second storage space for said coupler, at least a portion of said retractable cord being retractable into said first storage space.
- 58. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 57, wherein said second storage space includes a holder for said coupler when said portion of said retractable cord is retracted to said first storage space.
- 59. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 53, wherein said retractable cable includes at least one electrical wire.
- 60. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 53, wherein said retractable cable includes at least on fiber-optic cable.
- 61. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 53, wherein said cable comprises a universal serial bus cable.
- 62. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 56, wherein said casing includes said storage space.
- 63. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 62, wherein said casing includes a bottom wall, said storage space provided at said bottom wall.
- 64. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 62, wherein said storage space extends into said casing behind said reflective element.
- 65. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 53, said housing further including a workpiece holder for storing a workpiece in a location accessible by an occupant of the vehicle whereby the workpiece can be inserted into or removed from said workpiece holder for use by an occupant of the vehicle.
- 66. The interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle according to claim 65, wherein said workpiece holder includes a variable engagement element for engaging the workpiece whereby said workpiece holder can hold a plurality of workpieces having varying dimensions.
