Claims
- 1. A process for the preparation of a compound of the formula: ##STR23## wherein; R.sup.1 represents alkoxy or aralkoxy,
- R.sup.2 represents hydrogen, alkoxy, aralkoxy, alkyl, or aralkyl,
- or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 taken together represent the group --O--CH.sub.2 --O--,
- j is an integer having a value of 0 or 1,
- R.sup.3 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, acyl or a protecting group,
- Z.sup.1 represents a non-reacting electron withdrawing group which can be readily converted to a carboxyl group,
- Z.sup.2 represents a non-reacting electron withdrawing group which can be readily converted to a carboxyl group or hydrogen, and
- R.sup.10 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, or aralkyl;
- which comprises treating a compound of the formula: ##STR24## wherein: R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and j are as previously defined,
- Y represents Cl, Br, I or a leaving group, and
- X represents Cl, Br or I;
- (A) initially with an alkyl lithium at a temperature of less than -40.degree. C., and
- (B) thereafter with a compound of the formula: ##STR25## wherein: Z.sup.1, Z.sup.2 and R.sup.10 are as previously defined, followed by warming to a temperature of between about 0.degree. C. and about 120.degree. C.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein j has a value of 1.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein said alkyl lithium is a tertiary-alkyl lithium.
- 4. The process of claim 3, wherein Z.sup.1 represents COOR.sup.5 and Z.sup.2 represents COOR.sup.6 wherein R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are the same or different and represent alkyl or aralkyl.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein R.sup.10 represents a radical of the formula: ##STR26## wherein; R.sup.7 represents hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl or acyl,
- and
- R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 are the same or different and represent hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aralkoxy, or acyl.
- 6. The process of claim 5, wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are the same or different and represent lower alkyl.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represent methoxy.
- 8. The process of claim 6, wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 taken together represent the group --O--CH.sub.2 --O--.
- 9. The process of claim 8, wherein R.sup.7 represents methyl and R.sup.8 and R.sup.9 each represent methoxy.
- 10. The process of claim 9, wherein R.sup.3 represents methyl and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each represent ethyl.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said reaction is initiated at a temperature of less than -78.degree. C. and the reaction mixture is thereafter slowly warmed to a temperature between about 40.degree. C. and 90.degree. C.
- 12. The process of claim 10 wherein said reaction is initiated at a temperature of about -100.degree. C.
