Claims
- 1. An engine having a cylinder head and a combustion chamber, the engine comprising:
- a first intake valve arranged on an inner wall of the cylinder head;
- a fuel injector arranged on the inner wall of the cylinder head, wherein an injection direction of the fuel injector is determined so that the fuel injected by the fuel injector impinges upon a rear face of the valve head of the first intake valve when the amount of valve lift of the first intake valve exceeds a predetermined amount, and wherein the fuel injected by the fuel injector moves toward the combustion chamber beneath the first intake valve when the amount of valve lift of the first intake valve is smaller than the predetermined amount; and
- injection control means for controlling an injection timing and an amount of fuel injected by the fuel injector during an intake stroke of the engine, wherein the injection control means operates to increase a ratio of an amount of injected fuel impinging upon the rear face of the valve head of the first intake valve to an amount of injected fuel moving toward the combustion chamber beneath the first intake valve as an engine load increases.
- 2. An engine according to claim 1, wherein the injection control means alters an injection time to increase the ratio as the engine load increases.
- 3. An engine according to claim 2, wherein the injection control means retards the injection time to increase the ratio as the engine load increases.
- 4. An engine according to claim 1, wherein the injection control means increases the amount of fuel injected by the fuel injector during the intake stroke to increase the ratio as the engine load increases.
- 5. An engine according to claim 1, wherein an injection pressure of the fuel injector is determined so that, when the fuel injected by the fuel injector impinges upon the rear face of the valve head of the first intake valve, the fuel is reflected off of the rear face of the valve head and flows into an intake port of the first intake valve.
- 6. An engine according to claim 1, wherein the injection pressure of the fuel injector is higher than 70 kg/cm.sup.2.
- 7. An engine according to claim 1, further comprising a piston having a cavity formed on a top face thereof, wherein injected fuel moving toward the combustion chamber beneath the first intake valve is fed into the cavity.
- 8. An engine according to claim 7, wherein the cavity includes a shallow, dish-shaped portion and a deep, dish-shaped portion, wherein the deep, dish-shaped portion is formed in a central portion of the shallow, dish-shaped portion.
- 9. An engine according to claim 8, further including a spark plug arranged at a central portion of the inner wall of the cylinder head, wherein the fuel injector is arranged on a periphery of an inner wall of a cylinder head of the engine, and wherein the cavity extends from a point beneath the fuel injector to a point beneath the spark plug, a recessed portion being formed on a portion of the cavity connecting the shallow, dish-shaped portion and the deep, dish-shaped portion at a position beneath the spark plug.
- 10. An engine according to claim 7, wherein the injection control means controls the fuel injector to inject fuel during the intake stroke when the engine load is within a range extending from a predetermined lower load to a full load, and wherein all of the fuel injected by the fuel injector is fed into the cavity when the engine load is within a lower load portion of the range, and wherein all of the fuel injected by the fuel injector impinges upon the rear face of the valve head of the first intake valve when the engine load is in a higher load portion of the range.
- 11. An engine according to claim 10, wherein the injection control means controls the fuel injector to inject fuel toward the cavity at the end of a compression stroke of the engine when the engine load is higher than the predetermined lower load and lower than a predetermined higher engine load.
- 12. An engine according to claim 10, wherein the injection control means controls the fuel injectors to inject fuel toward the cavity when the engine load is lower than the predetermined lower load.
- 13. An engine according to claim 1, further comprising a second intake valve, a first intake passage connected to the combustion chamber via the first intake valve and a second intake passage connected to the combustion chamber via the second intake valve, wherein the first intake passage includes a helical intake port formed in the cylinder head and wherein the second intake passage includes a substantially straight intake port formed in the cylinder head.
- 14. An engine according to claim 13, wherein an intake control valve is arranged in the second passage and is closed when an engine load is lower than a predetermined intake control valve activating load, wherein the intake control valve is open when the engine load is higher than the predetermined intake control valve activating load.
