Claims
- 1. An internal combustion engine, which comprises
- at least one pair of cylinders, each of which has a head and a bottom,
- at least one pair of pistons, each of which is reciprocable in one of said cylinders and defines a power chamber with said head of said cylinder and an air compression chamber with said bottom of said cylinder.
- controlled intake and exhaust ports formed in each of said cylinders and adapted to communicate with said power chamber thereof,
- igniting means associated with each of said cylinders and operable to initiate a combustion of a fuel-air mixture in said power chamber of the associated cylinder,
- an inlet formed in each of said cylinders and adapted to communicate with said compression chamber thereof,
- a valve controlling each of said inlets,
- both said pistons of each pair being adapted to perform in unison a forward stroke toward a dead center near side bottom, whereby air is compressed in the compression chamber of the associated cylinder, and a reverse stroke from said dead center near said bottom to a dead center near said head, and
- transfer means for transferring compressed air from said compression chambers to said exhaust port of each of said cylinders after a power stroke of the associated piston,
- said transfer means comprising at least one pair of compression chamber outlets arranged to communicate with said compression chambers of both cylinders of each pair at the beginning of each of said reverse strokes of the associated piston, at least one pair of power chamber inlets arranged to communicate with each of said power chambers of both cylinders of each pair at the beginning of each of said reverse strokes of the associated piston, at least one pair of transfer ducts adapted to connect one pair of said outlets to one pair of said inlets, and a cross-connecting duct connecting said transfer ducts of each pair.
- 2. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 1, in which said transfer means are arranged to connect both compression chamber outlets of said cylinders of each pair to said inlet of each of said cylinders of said pair at the beginning of each of said reverse strokes of the associated piston.
- 3. An internal combination engine as set forth in claim 1, in which
- one of said reverse strokes is an exhaust stroke succeeding said power stroke, the other of said opposite strokes is a compression stroke preceding said power stroke, each of said pistons is adapted to perform between said exhaust stroke and said compression stroke an intake stroke as a forward stroke, and each of said pistons is arranged to perform its compression stroke during the exhaust stroke of the other piston of said pair, and to perform its power stroke during the intake stroke of the other piston of said pair, and
- said transfer means comprise controlled valve means which are arranged to connect said outlets of both compression chambers of said cylinders of each pair to said inlet of each cylinder of each pair at the beginning of said exhaust stroke of the associated piston.
- 4. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 3, in which said valve means are incorporated in said transfer ducts above said cross-connecting ducts.
- 5. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 1, in which
- at least two of said pairs of cylinders are provided, and
- a pair of said pistons are associated with each of said pairs of cylinders and arranged to move with a phase displacement relative to another pair of said pistons.
- 6. An internal combustion engine as set forth in claim 5, in which one of said cross-connecting ducts is longer than the other and smaller in cross-section so that both cross-connecting ducts have the same volume.
