Claims
- 1. A heater for maintaining a fluid substantially at a desired use temperature while said fluid is disposed in a section of piping disposed in fluid communication with an output of a primary heat source for said fluid, said primary heat source initially heating said fluid to at least said desired use temperature, said heater comprising:
a resistance heating element comprising a resistance heating wire having a pair of terminal ends coupled to a pair of electrical connectors, said resistance heating wire encapsulated within a thin electrically insulating polymeric layer, said resistance heating wire capable of maintaining said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature; and a first connecting body, said first connecting body including a first fluid inlet port, a first fluid outlet port, a first electrical connection port and a first fluid passageway defined between said first fluid inlet port and said first fluid outlet port, said resistance heating element disposed at least partially within said first fluid passageway, at least a first one of said terminal ends of said resistance heating wire being coupled to a respective first one of said pair of electrical connectors through said first electrical connection port, said first connecting body configured to be coupled to said section of piping.
- 2. The heater of claim 1, wherein said polymeric layer comprises a polysulfone, polycarbonate, polyetherimide, polyether sulfone, polypropylene, a fluorocarbon, epoxy, silicone, phenolic, polyetheretherkeytone, polyphenylene sulfide, or a combination thereof.
- 3. The heater of claim 1, wherein said a second one of said pair of terminal ends is coupled to a respective second one of said pair of electrical connectors through said first electrical connection port.
- 4. The heater of claim 3, wherein said pair of electrical connectors includes a pair of cold pins.
- 5. The heater of claim 1, further comprising a second connecting body including a second fluid inlet port, a second fluid outlet port, a second electrical connection port and a second fluid passageway defined between said second fluid inlet port and said second fluid outlet port, said resistance heating element disposed at least partially within said second fluid passageway, a second one of said pair of terminal ends being coupled to a respective second one of said pair of electrical connectors through said second electrical connection port of said second connecting body, said second connecting body configured to be coupled to said section of piping.
- 6. The heater of claim 5, wherein said section of piping connects said first and second connecting bodies, at least a portion of said resistance heating element disposed axially through said section of piping.
- 7. The heater of claim 5, wherein said pair of electrical connectors includes a pair of cold pins.
- 8. The heater of claim 7, further comprising an electrical insulation material heat shrunk around a connection between said first one of said pair of terminal ends and a respective first one of said pair of cold pins and an electrical insulation material heat shrunk around a connection between said second one of said pair of terminal ends and a respective second one of said pair of cold pins.
- 9. The heater of claim 5, further comprising a first fluid-tight seal disposed within said first electrical connection port and surrounding a connection between said first one of said pair of terminal ends and said first one of said pair of electrical connectors and a second fluid-tight seal disposed within said second electrical connection port and surrounding a connection between said second one of said pair of terminal ends and said second one of said pair of electrical connectors.
- 10. The heater of claim 5, further comprising a temperature control means for selectively energizing said resistance heating element to maintain said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature.
- 11. The heater of claim 5, wherein said resistance heating element is spirally shaped.
- 12. The heater of claim 1, further comprising a fluid-tight seal disposed within said first electrical connection port and surrounding a connection between said first one of said pair of terminal ends and said first one of said pair of electrical connectors.
- 13. The heater of claim 1, further comprising a temperature control means for selectively energizing said resistance heating element to maintain said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature.
- 14. A heater for maintaining a fluid substantially at a desired use temperature while said fluid is disposed in a section of piping disposed in fluid communication with an output of a primary heat source for said fluid, said primary heat source initially heating said fluid to at least said desired use temperature, said heater comprising:
a resistance heating element comprising a resistance heating wire having a pair of terminal ends, said resistance heating wire encapsulated within a thin electrically insulating polymeric layer, said resistance heating wire capable of maintaining said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature; a connecting body, said connecting body including a fluid inlet port, a fluid outlet port, an electrical connection port and a fluid passageway defined between said fluid inlet port and said fluid outlet port, said resistance heating element disposed at least partially within said fluid passageway, said connecting body configured to be coupled to said section of piping; a first and second cold pins disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port, said first cold pin coupled to a first one of said pair of terminal ends and said second cold pin connected to a second one of said pair of terminal ends; and an electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port, said electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal surrounding a connection between said first cold pin and said first one of said pair terminal ends and a connection between said second cold pin and said second one of said pair of terminal ends.
- 15. The heater of claim 14, further comprising an electrical insulation material heat shrunk around said connection between said first cold pin and said first terminal end and an electrical insulation material heat shrunk around said connection between said second cold pin and said second terminal end.
- 16. The heater of claim 14, further comprising temperature control means for selectively energizing said resistance heating element to maintain said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature.
- 17. A heater for maintaining a fluid substantially at a desired use temperature while said fluid is disposed in a section of piping disposed in fluid communication with an output of a primary heat source for said fluid, said primary heat source heating said fluid to at least said desired use temperature, said heater comprising:
a resistance heating element comprising a resistance heating wire having a pair of terminal ends, said resistance heating wire encapsulated within a thin electrically insulating polymeric layer, said resistance heating wire capable of maintaining said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature; a first and second connecting bodies disposed at a first and second ends of said section of piping, respectively, each of said connecting bodies including a fluid inlet port, a fluid outlet port, an electrical connection port, and a fluid passageway defined between said fluid inlet port and said fluid outlet port, at least a portion of said resistance heating element disposed axially through said section of piping; a first and second cold pins connected to a respective one of said pair of terminal ends, said first cold pin disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port of said first connecting body and said second cold pin disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port of said second connecting body; a first electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port of said first connecting body, said first seal surrounding a connection between said first cold pin and a first one of said pair of terminal ends; and a second electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port of said second connecting body, said second seal surrounding a connection between said second cold pin and a second one of said pair of terminal ends.
- 18. The heater of claim 17, wherein said resistance heating wire is spirally shaped.
- 19. The heater of claim 17, further comprising temperature control means for selectively energizing said resistance heating element to maintain said fluid substantially at said desired use temperature.
- 20. A hot beverage dispensing apparatus, comprising:
a primary fluid heat source, said primary fluid heat source initially heating a fluid to at least a hot beverage temperature; a section of piping in fluid communication with an output of said primary fluid heat source; and a heater for maintaining said fluid at a desired use temperature while said fluid is disposed within said section of piping, said heater comprising:
a resistance heating element comprising a resistance heating wire having a pair of terminal ends, said resistance heating wire encapsulated within a thin electrically insulating polymeric layer, said resistance heating wire capable of maintaining said fluid substantially at said hot beverage temperature; a connecting body connected to said section of piping, said connecting body including a fluid inlet port, a fluid outlet port, an electrical connection port and a fluid passageway defined between said fluid inlet port and said fluid outlet port, said resistance heating element disposed at least partially within said fluid passageway and said section of piping; a first and second cold pins disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port, said first cold pin coupled to a first one of said pair of electrical connectors and said second cold pin connected to a second one of said pair of electrical connectors; and an electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port, said electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal surrounding a connection between said first cold pin and said first one of said pair of terminal ends and a connection between said second cold pin and said second one of said pair of terminal ends. maintain said fluid substantially at said hot beverage temperature.
- 21. A hot beverage dispensing apparatus, comprising:
a primary fluid heat source, said primary fluid heat source initially heating a fluid to at least a hot beverage temperature; a section of piping in fluid communication with an output of said primary fluid heat source; and a heater for maintaining said fluid at said hot beverage temperature while said fluid is disposed within said section of piping, said heater comprising:
a resistance heating element comprising a resistance heating wire having a pair of terminal ends, said resistance heating wire encapsulated within a thin electrically insulating polymeric layer, said resistance heating wire capable of maintaining said fluid substantially at said hot beverage temperature; a first and second connecting bodies disposed at a first and second ends of said section of piping, respectively, each of said connecting bodies including a fluid inlet port, a fluid outlet port, an electrical connection port, and a fluid passageway defined between said fluid inlet port and said fluid outlet port, at least a portion of said resistance heating element disposed axially through said section of piping; a first and second cold pins, said first cold pin disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port of said first connecting body and said second cold pin disposed at least partially within said electrical connection port of said second connecting body, said first cold pin connected to a first one of said pair of terminal ends and said second cold pin connected to a second one of said pair of terminal ends; a first electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port of said first connecting body, said first seal surrounding a connection between said first cold pin and said first one of said pair of terminal ends; and a second electrically insulative and fluid-tight seal disposed within said electrical connection port of said second connecting body, said second seal surrounding a connection between said second cold pin and said second one of said pair of terminal ends.
