Claims
- 1. In an internal milling machine for milling crank pins on a crankshaft, said machine having a fixed frame, a milling cutter holder mounted on said frame for horizontal and vertial movement within a vertical general plane, an internal milling cutter mounted in said cutter holder for rotation about a cutter axis normal to said vertical general plane, chuck means mounted on said frame for supporting a crankshaft in an operative relationship to said cutter wherein said crankshaft projects axially through said cutter with the crankshaft axis normal to said general plane, and orbiting means for driving said cutter in orbital milling movement around a crank pin of a crankshaft supported in said chuck means; the improvement wherein said orbiting means comprises a main shaft mounted on said frame for rotation about a shaft axis normal to said general plane, cam roller means mounted upon said main shaft for rotation with said shaft and for rotation about a cam axis parallel to and radially offset from said shaft axis, a first cutter holder shifting means including a follower surface engaged by said cam roller means for transmitting vertical movement of said cam roller means relative to said frame to said cutter holder, second cutter holder shifting means including a follower surface engaged by said cam roller means for transmitting horizontal movement of said cam roller means relative to said frame to said cutter holder, and drive means for driving said main shaft in rotation about said shaft axis.
- 2. The invention defined in claim 1 further comprising adjustment means for locating said cam roller means on said main shaft at selected positions of radial offset from said shaft axis.
- 3. The invention defined in claim 2 wherein said adjustment means comprises a face plate on said main shaft, guide means on said face plate engaged with said cam follower means for guiding said cam follower means in movement radially of said main shaft, positioning means for locating said cam follower means on said guide means, and clamp means for locking said cam follower means to said face plate in a position established by said locating means.
- 4. The invention defined in claim 3 wherein said cam follower means comprises a mounting block received by said guide means and said positioning means comprises a locating block fixedly mounted on said face plate and a gage block of selected thickness adapted to be clampingly engaged between said locating block and said mounting block to establish a selected spacing between said locating block and said mounting block.
- 5. The invention defined in claim 4 wherein said clamp means comprises first bolt means engaged between said locating block and said mounting block for drawing said mounting block toward said locating block to clamp said gage block therebetween, and second bolt means engaged between said mounting block and said face plate for clamping said mounting block to said face plate.
- 6. The invention defined in claim 1 further comprising first gage block means for establishing a selected spacing between said cam axis and said shaft axis, and second gage block means for establishing a selected vertical spacing between said cutter axis and said horizontal surface of said first cutter holder shifting means.
- 7. The invention defined in claim 1 wherein said second cutter holder shifting means comprises a cross slide mounted on said frame for horizontal reciprocatory movement along a path parallel to said general plane, and biasing means is provided for maintaining said follower surfaces in contact with said cam follower means throughout a complete revolution of said cam shaft and comprises means engaged between said frame and said cross slide horizontally biasing said cross slide in a direction wherein said vertical follower surface is urged against said cam roller means.
- 8. The invention defined in claim 7 wherein said first cutter holder shifting means comprises means mounting said cutter holder on said cross slide for vertical reciprocatory movement relative to said cross slide, said horizontal follower surface on said first cutter holder shifting means being a downwardly facing surface overlying said cam roller means whereby said horizontal surface is gravitationally biased toward said cam roller means, and reciprocatory motor means engaged between said cross slide and said cutter holder for applying an upwardly directed force normally supporting a substantial portion of the weight of said cutter holder.
