Claims
- 1. The compound having the following formula: ##STR36## wherein R is carboxy, a carboxy salt, or derivatized carboxy of the formula COOE wherein E is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms;
- A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1, or 2, and oxymethylene (--O--CH.sub.2);
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2, or 3, and --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--; and A and Y are in the ortho, meta, or para orientation;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl, or 1-hydroxybutyl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene;
- R.sup.2 is independently hydrogen or methyl;
- R.sup.3 is hydrogen;
- R.sup.4 is selected independently from the group consisting of hydrogen or methyl; and
- R.sup.5 taken together with R.sup.2 is a carbocyclic ring with from 5 to 9 members.
- 2. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is carboxy or a pharmaceutically acceptable carboxy salt.
- 3. The compound of claim 2 which has the formula: ##STR37## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1, or 2 or oxymethylene;
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2, or 3 and --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH; and A and Y are in the ortho, meta, or para orientation;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl, or 1-hydroxybutyl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene; and
- n is an integer of from 2 to 6.
- 4. 4-[4-Acetyl-7-(1-hydroxycyclohexyl)heptyl]-benzoic acid, the compound of claim 3 wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.o, Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.3, and A and Y are in the para orientation, R.sup.1 is acetyl, Z is ethylene, and N is 3.
- 5. 4-[4-Acetyl-7-(1-hydroxycyclohexyl)-6-heptyn-1-yl]benzoic acid, the compound of claim 3 wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.o, Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.3, and A and Y are in the para orientation, R.sup.1 is acetyl, Z is ethynylene, and n is 3.
- 6. The compound of claim 2 which has the formula: ##STR38## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1 or 2 or oxymethylene;
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2 or 3 or --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH-- and A and Y are in the ortho, meta, and para orientation;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, or butyryl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene;
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen or methyl;
- R.sup.3 is lower alkanoyl;
- R.sup.4 is hydrogen or methyl; and
- R.sup.5 taken together with R.sup.2 is a carbocyclic ring with from 5 to 9 members.
- 7. The compound of claim 2 which has the formula: ##STR39## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1 or 2 or oxymethylene;
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2 or 3 or --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl, or 1-hydroxybutyl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene;
- R.sup.4 is hydrogen or methyl; and
- R.sup.5 taken together with R.sup.2 is a carbocyclic ring with from 5 to 9 members.
- 8. The compound of claim 2 which has the formula: ##STR40## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1, or 2 or oxymethylene;
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2, or 3 or --CH.sub.2 --CH.dbd.CH--;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, 1-hydroxyethyl, 1-hydroxypropyl, or 1-hydroxybutyl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene;
- R.sup.4 is hydrogen or methyl; and
- R.sup.5 taken together with R.sup.2 is a carbocyclic ring with from 5 to 9 members.
- 9. The compound of claim 1 which has the formula: ##STR41## wherein A is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 0, 1 or 2;
- Y is (CH.sub.2).sub.n where n is 1, 2, or 3;
- and A and Y are in the ortho, meta, or para orientation;
- R.sup.1 is acetyl, propionyl, or butyryl;
- Z is ethylene, vinylene, or ethynylene;
- R.sup.2 is methyl or hydrogen;
- R.sup.4 is selected independently from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl;
- R.sup.5 taken together with R.sup.2 is a carbocyclic ring with from 5 to 9 members; and
- E is alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 10. A composition comprising the compound of claim 1 in a non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 which is suitable for oral administration in tablet form.
- 12. The composition of claim 10 which is suitable for oral adminstration in capsule form.
- 13. The composition of claim 10 which is suitable for parenteral administration.
- 14. The composition of claim 10 which is suitable for use in suppository form.
