Claims
- 1. A system for contracting a collagenous tissue of a patient body, the system comprising:a surface oriented for engaging the tissue; an energy source that supplies sufficient energy to selectively contract a portion of the engaged tissue; at least one cooling element mounted to the surface to selectively cool another portion of the engaged tissue through the surface; and at least one energy transmitting element coupled to the energy source so as to selectively transmit the energy through the surface and into the portion of the engaged tissue, the at least one cooling and energy transmitting elements defining a treatment pattern so that the contracted tissue portion is interspersed with the cooled tissue portion along the tissue engaging surface.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmitting element comprises a plurality of bipolar electrode pairs, the pairs of electrodes separated across the surface so that at least a portion of the tissue between the pairs remains below a maximum safe tissue temperature when the portion contracts.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmitting element comprises at least two elongate electrodes.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the elongate electrodes transmit bipolar electrical energy through the surface and into the portion of the engaged tissue.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmitting element comprises a body having a plurality of protrusions, the energy transmitting body having sufficient thermal mass to direct the tissue contracting energy to the portion of the engaged tissue through the protrusions.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmitting element comprises a hot fluid conduit.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one energy transmitting element comprises a heated plate having a plurality of heated protrusions.
- 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the energy transmitting protrusions having sufficient thermal mass are pre-heated.
- 9. The system of claim 7, wherein the energy transmitting protrusions further comprise resistive heating elements.
- 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cooling element comprises a chilled fluid conduit.
- 11. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cooling element comprises a cooled plate having a plurality of cooled protrusions.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cooling element comprises a plurality of chilled irrigation ports.
- 13. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one cooling element comprises a thermoelectric cooling module.
- 14. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one energy transmitting element and the at least one cooling element define an array of discrete tissue heating and tissue cooling areas.
- 15. The system of claim 1, wherein at least one energy transmitting element and the at least one cooling element define an elongate serpentine shape.
- 16. The system of claim 1, wherein the treatment pattern is arranged so as to minimize injury to the tissue when energy is directed from the at least one energy transmitting element to contract the portion of the engaged tissue.
- 17. The system of claim 1, wherein the surface comprises an expandable balloon.
