Claims
- 1. An intravascular catheter for performing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures within a patient's blood vessel comprising a catheter shaft having an inner lumen extending therein and a wall defining the inner lumen which is formed of a polymeric matrix and braided polymeric strands therein with a plurality of reinforcing metallic ribbons separate from the braided polymeric strands within the wall of the composite shaft.
- 2. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the composite shaft has at least three reinforcing ribbons disposed within the wall thereof.
- 3. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the reinforcing ribbons are helically disposed within the shaft wall.
- 4. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the reinforcing ribbons are formed of a material selected from the group consisting of stainless steel and superelastic NiTi alloy.
- 5. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein a thermoplastic coating or jacket is provided on the exterior of the shaft wall.
- 6. The intravascular catheter of claim 5 wherein the thermoplastic jacket or coating has a thickness of about 0.0005 to about 0.002 inch.
- 7. The intravascular catheter of claim 1 wherein the distal end thereof is shaped to facilitate the advancement and entry into a patient's coronary ostium.
- 8. The catheter of claim 1 including a soft distal tip to prevent or minimize traumatic engagement with a blood vessel lining.
- 9. The composite flexible tubular structure of claim 1 wherein a thermoplastic jacket or coating is provided on the exterior of the composite tubular structure.
- 10. A balloon dilatation catheter for performing an angioplasty procedure comprising;
- a) an elongated tubular shaft having a cylindrical wall with an inner lumen extending therein and formed of a polymeric matrix, braided polymeric strands incorporated therein and a plurality of reinforcing metallic ribbons separate from the braided polymeric strands within the polymer matrix; and
- b) a dilatation balloon on a distal portion of the tubular shaft having an interior in fluid communication with the inner lumen of the catheter shaft.
- 11. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 10 wherein the composite shaft has at least three reinforcing ribbons disposed within the wall thereof.
- 12. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 11 wherein the reinforcing ribbons are helically disposed within the wall of the catheter shaft.
- 13. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 11 wherein the reinforcing ribbons are formed of a material selected from the group consisting of stainless steel and superelastic NiTi alloy.
- 14. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 11 wherein a thermoplastic coating or jacket is provided on the exterior of the wall of the catheter shaft.
- 15. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 14 wherein the thermoplastic jacket or coating has a thickness of about 0.0005 to about 0.002 inch.
- 16. The balloon dilatation catheter of claim 11 wherein the a shapable guiding member is provided on the distal end to facilitate the advancement of the catheter into a patient's coronary artery.
