Claims
- 1. An intramedullary bone plug, comprising:
- a generally cylindrical plug body defining a central axis and having a size and shape for reception into the medullary canal of a patient bone, said plug body having a proximal end and a distal end with said distal end comprising a leading end upon reception into the medullary canal of a patient bone;
- a set of distal fins comprising a spiral thread formed on said plug body and being distally canted relative to said central axis and undercut to define an undercut outer edge presented distally to engage and bite into patient bone upon reception into the medullary canal; and
- at least one proximal fin on said plug body, said at least one proximal fin having a size and shape for deformation upon insertion into the medullary canal to define an outer edge presented proximally;
- said proximal fin being formed on said plug body at a location generally adjacent to said proximal end, and said spiral thread being formed on said plug body between said proximal fin and said distal end.
- 2. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 1 wherein said plug body is formed integrally with said spiral thread and said at least one proximal fin.
- 3. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 2 wherein said bone plug is formed from a biocompatible plastic material.
- 4. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 1 wherein said at least one proximal fin comprises a plurality of proximal fins.
- 5. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 1 wherein said spiral thread is formed to define at least two turns.
- 6. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 1 wherein said plug body has a proximal end with a hex socket formed therein.
- 7. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 6 wherein said plug body further includes a threaded socket formed therein, said hex socket being formed between said threaded socket and said proximal end.
- 8. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 6 wherein said plug body further defines a through port extending between one end of said hex socket and a distal end of said plug body, and further including a stopper pin for mounting into said plug body to close said through port.
- 9. An intramedullary bone plug, comprising:
- a generally cylindrical plug body defining a central axis, said plug body being formed from a medical grade plastic material and having a size and shape for reception into the medullary canal of a patient bone, said plug body having a proximal end and a distal end with said distal end comprising a leading end upon reception into the medullary canal of a patient bone;
- a set of distal fins formed integrally on said plug body, said distal fins comprising a spiral thread distally canted relative to said central axis and undercut to define a distally presented undercut outer edge to engage and bite into patient bone upon reception into the medullary canal; and
- a set of proximal fins formed integrally on said plug body and having a size and shape to define proximally presented outer edges when the bone plug is inserted into the medullary canal;
- said proximal fins being formed on said plug body at a location generally adjacent to said proximal end and said spiral thread being formed on said plug body between said proximal fins and said distal end;
- said proximal end of said plug body having a drive socket formed therein.
- 10. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 9 wherein said plug body further defines a threaded bore disposed at a distal end of said drive socket.
- 11. The intramedullary bone plug of claim 9 wherein said plug further defines a through port extending between a distal end of said drive socket and said distal end of said plug body, and further including a stopper pin for mounting into said plug body to close said through port.
