Claims
- 1. A foldable intraocular lens comprising an optic wherein the optic comprises a copolymer having a glass transition temperature less than about 37.degree. C. and an elongation of at least 150%, wherein the copolymer comprises
- (i) at least two monomers of the formula: ##STR4## wherein X is H or CH.sub.3 ; m is 0-10;
- Y is nothing, O, S, or NR wherein R is H, CH.sub.3, C.sub.n H.sub.2n+1 (n=1-10), iso OC.sub.3 H.sub.7, C.sub.6 H.sub.5, or CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ;
- Ar is an aromatic ring which can be unsubstituted or substituted with CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, n-C.sub.3 H.sub.7, iso-C.sub.3 H.sub.7, OCH.sub.3, C.sub.6 H.sub.11, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 or CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.5 ;
- provided that one of the monomers has X=H and the other monomer has X=CH.sub.3, and further provided that the monomer having X=H is present in an amount greater than the monomer having X=CH.sub.3 ; and
- (ii) a copolymerizable cross-linking monomer having a plurality of polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups; provided that the copolymer does not contain a total of 70% by weight or more of N-vinyl lactam or a total of about 70% by weight or more of a polyfunctional allyl monomer.
- 2. The intraocular lens of claim 1 wherein said copolymer has an elongation of at least 200%.
- 3. The foldable intraocular lens of claim 1 wherein the copolymer comprises polyethylene glycol 1000 dimethacrylate as a cross-linking monomer.
