Claims
- 1. A method for perfusing an oxygenated medium in the cerebral vasculature of a patient, said method comprising:inserting a first catheter into a jugular vein at a location that drains at least a portion of the cerebral vasculature; inserting a second catheter into at least one of the right or left common carotid artery at a location that feeds at least a portion of the cerebral vasculature; stopping blood flow within the aorta while the aorta remains in fluid communication with the right and left common carotid arteries; and flowing the oxygenated medium from the second catheter into at least one right or left common carotid artery, through the cerebral vasculature to the jugular vein, and into the first catheter.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the oxygenated medium comprises blood, and wherein the method further comprises the step of recirculating the blood from the venous access location to the arterial access location and oxygenating the blood while it is being recirculated.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising the step of cooling the blood while it is being recirculated.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the jugular vein is accessed at a location selected from the group consisting of a neck, an incision on the femoral vein, or an incision on the subclavian vein.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the common carotid artery is accessed at a location selected from the group consisting of a neck, an incision on the femoral artery, or an incision on the subdlavian artery.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of occluding the jugular vein at the access location to inhibit antegrade flow past said access location away from the cerebral vasculature.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of occluding the right or left common carotid artery at the access location to inhibit retrograde flow past said access location from cerebral vasculature.
- 8. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of performing a diagnostic or interventional procedure on the aorta.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of performing an open surgical interventional procedure on the aorta.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of performing repair of an aortic aneurysm, repair of an aortic dissection, reconstruction of the aorta, or endarterectomy.
