Claims
- 1. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of the patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having a plurality of electrode pairs on a distal section thereof which are electrically connected to electrical conductors extending along the length of the intravascular device;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal section of the intravascular device having the electrodes is disposed within a branch of a blood vessel of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart wall outside of the branch of the blood vessel at a plurality of locations from within the blood vessel by the electrode pairs and transmitting the received signals through the electrical conductors to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 2. The method of claim 1 including shaping a portion of the distal section of the intravascular device distal to the electrode pairs before the intravascular device is introduced into the patient's vasculature and torquing a proximal portion of the intravascular device extending out of the patient to direct the shaped distal portion of the intravascular device in a desired branch of a blood vessel of the patient's heart so that the intravascular device can be advanced therein until at least four electrode pairs are disposed with the branch of the blood vessel.
- 3. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of the patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having at least four electrode pairs on a distal section thereof which are electrically connected to electrical conductors extending along the length of the intravascular device;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal section of the intravascular device having the electrodes is disposed within a blood vessel of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the wall of the patient's heart at at least four locations within the blood vessel by the electrode pairs and transmitting the received signals through the electrical conductors to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 4. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of the patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having at least four bipolar sensing electrode pairs on a distal section thereof which are electrically connected to electrical conductors extending along the length of the intravascular device;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal section of the intravascular device having the bipolar sensing electrodes is disposed within a blood vessel of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart at at least four locations within the blood vessel by the sensing electrode pairs and transmitting the received signals through the electrical conductors to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 5. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of a patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having electrodes on a distal portion thereof which are electrically connected to electrical conductors which extend along the length of the intravascular device;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal portion of the intravascular device having the electrodes is disposed within a blood vessel in the desired region of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart by the electrodes at at least two locations within the blood vessels of the patient's heart and transmitting the received signals to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 6. A method of detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of a patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having an elongated shaft with proximal and distal shaft sections, a plurality of electrodes on the distal shaft section which are electrically connected to electrical conductors extending along the length of the elongated shaft, a shaped distal extremity on the distal shaft section distal to the electrodes and a proximal portion of the proximal shaft section extending out of the patient;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature, torquing the shaft of the device from the proximal portion of the proximal shaft section which extends out of the patient to guide the shaped distal portion of the distal shaft section of the intravascular device into a desired blood vessel in the patient's heart, until the distal shaft section having the electrodes is disposed in the desired blood vessel; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart by the electrode pairs at a plurality of locations within the desired blood vessel of the patient's heart and transmitting the received signals through the electrical conductors to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 7. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of a patient's heart, comprising:
- a) introducing into the patient's vasculature an elongated intravascular device having bipolar sensing electrodes on a distal portion thereof which are electrically connected to electrical conductors which extend along the length of the intravascular device and which has a manually shapable distal portion distal to the sensing electrodes;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal portion of the intravascular device having the bipolar sensing electrodes is disposed within a blood vessel in the desired region of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart by the sensing electrodes at at least two locations within the blood vessels of the patient's heart and transmitting the received signals to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 8. A method of intravascularly detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of a patient's heart, comprising:
- a) providing an elongated intravascular device having proximal and distal sections, a plurality of sensing electrodes on the distal section, a plurality of electrical conductors which are electrically connected to the sensing electrodes and which extend along the length of the intravascular device and a shapable distal portion distal to the sensing electrodes which has a core member and a coil disposed about and secured to the core member;
- b) advancing the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature until the distal section of the intravascular device having the sensing electrodes is disposed within a blood vessel in the desired region of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart by the sensing electrodes from within the blood vessels of the patient's heart and transmitting the received signals to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
- 9. A method of detecting from within a branch of a blood vessel of a patient's heart electrical signals emanating from outside of the branch of the blood vessel and within a wall of a patient's heart, comprising:
- a) providing an elongated intravascular device having proximal and distal sections, a plurality of sensing electrodes on the distal section, a plurality of electrical conductors which are electrically connected to the sensing electrodes and which extend along the length of the intravascular device and a shaped distal portion distal to the sensing electrodes which has a core member and a coil disposed about and secured to the core member;
- b) guiding the intravascular device through the patient's vasculature by means of the shaped distal portion until the distal section of the intravascular device having the sensing electrodes is disposed within a branch blood vessel in the desired region of the patient's heart; and
- c) receiving electrical signals from the desired region of the patient's heart by the sensing electrodes from within the branch blood vessel of the patient's heart and transmitting the received signals to a proximal extremity of the intravascular device.
