Claims
- 1. In a multistage depressed collector having a retarding electric field for slowing charge particles prior to being collected, the improvement comprising
- a plurality of pyrolytic graphite electrode plates adjacent to said beam for intercepting said slowed charged particles, each of said plates having a textured surface comprising a dense array of spires, each having a diameter less than about 1 micron and a height between about 5 microns and about 10 microns to attain low secondary emission yields of about 0.3 and reduced numbers of reflected primary electrons.
- 2. A multistage depressed collector as claimed in claim 1 wherein the textured surface has a reflected primary electron index of less than 1 when the primary electrons have energies in the range between 500 eV and 1000 eV.
- 3. A multistage depressed collector as claimed in claim 1 wherein the electrode plates are high purity pyrolytic graphite having a maximum 0.01 percent ash content.
- 4. A multistage depressed collector as claimed in claim 1 wherein the pyrolytic graphite has a crystalline orientation such that the textured surfaces are substantially parallel to the direction of high strength and high thermal conductivity.
