Claims
- 1. A heat hardening or air drying water-based composition suitable for use as a coating, ink, adhesive, or sealant comprising:
- the reaction product of a mixture of Part A and Part B components;
- said Part A component comprising an enhanced molecular weight epoxy polymer emulsion; and,
- said Part B component comprising an amine chosen from the group consisting of primary, secondary, and tertiary amines,
- wherein said Part A component comprises an epoxy polymer prepared by homopolymerizing water-borne epoxy resin particles with an alkaline substance.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 in which the epoxy is free of functional groups other than epoxide or epoxide and hydroxyl groups and contains at least 3 carbon atoms.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 in which the epoxy is chosen from the group consisting of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and a diglycidyl ether of saturated bisphenol A.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 in which the epoxy is a polyether derivative of a polyhydric phenol containing epoxide groups.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 in which the epoxy is the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F.
- 6. The composition of claim 2 in which the epoxy is an aminated aldehyde ether chain extended epoxy with terminal epoxide groups.

- 8. The composition of claim 1 in which the alkaline substance is chosen from the group consisting of KOH, NaOH, a primary amine, a secondary amine, and a tertiary amine.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 in which the alkaline substance is an aminated aldehyde ether chain extended epoxy with terminal epoxide groups.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 in which an acidic neutralizer is used to stop the polymerization.
- 11. The composition of claim 10 in which the acidic neutralizer is formic acid.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 in which the amine of Part B is chosen from the group consisting of monoamine, diamine, triamine, and tetramine with primary, secondary or tertiary amine functionality.
- 13. The composition of claim 1 in which the amine of Part B is ammonia.
- 14. The composition of claim 1 in which the amine of Part B is the non-gel reaction product of an aldehyde ether monomer with a polyamine or polyamines chosen from the group consisting of is primary, secondary and/or tertiary amines and/or fatty polyfunctional polyamines.
- 15. The composition of claim 1 of which the amine of Part B is hexamethylene diamine.
