Claims
- 1. A method for polymerizing olefins, diolefins, or acetylenically unsaturated monomers containing two or more carbon atoms, either alone or in combination with each other or with other polymerizable monomers, comprising contacting the monomers with an ionic polymerization catalyst comprising (I) a group 4 metallocene cation and (2) a stabilizing noncoordinating anion, said anion represented by the general formula:

- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein M' is aluminum or boron.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein M' is boron.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said Q.sub.1 to Q.sub.n are each fluorine substituted phenyl, naphthyl or anthracenyl radicals.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said Q.sub.1 to Q.sub.n are each a fluorinated naphthyl radical.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said Q.sub.1 to Q.sub.n hydrocarbyl radicals and substituted-hydrocarbyl radicals are selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl radicals containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms and substituted hydrocarbyl radicals, containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, wherein one or more of the hydrogen atoms is replaced by a halogen atom.
- 7. The method of claim 1 where said group 4 metallocene cation is of the general formula:
- [(A-Cp)MX.sub.1 ].sup.+ or [(A-Cp)MX.sub.1 L].sup.+
- wherein M is titanium, zirconium or hafnium;
- (A-Cp) is either (Cp)(Cp*) or (Cp-A'-Cp*) and Cp and Cp* are the same or different substituted or unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl radicals;
- A' is a covalent bridging group containing a group 14 element;
- X.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of hydride radicals, hydrocarbyl radicals, substituted-hydrocarbyl radicals and organometalloid radicals, and
- L' is a neutral Lewis base.
- 8. The method of claim 7 where said substituted cyclopentadienyl radicals are substituted with the same or different radical selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl radicals and substituted-hydrocarbyl radicals containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 9. The method of claim 8 where said substituted cyclopentadienyl is substituted with one or more aromatic radical or alkyl-substituted radical.
- 10. The method of claim 7 where said olefins comprise ethylene alone or with one or more .alpha.-olefins having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms.
- 11. The method of claim 1 where said olefins comprise propylene alone or with one or more of ethylene and .alpha.-olefins having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms.
