Claims
- 1. A videocassette recorder (VCR), comprising:
- a signal input terminal for receiving a signal from a signal source external to said VCR;
- control means for generating remote control signals for controlling said external signal source;
- means coupled to said control means for transmitting said remote control signal to said external signal source;
- said control means generating and applying said remote control signals to said transmitting means in response to user-entered data;
- said transmitting means comprising an IR LED assembly disposed adjacent a window, said window capable of passing IR light to transmit said remote control signals directly therethrough in an indirect transmission path to said external signal source and also deflecting IR light passing therethrough at an angle to an angle of incidence of the IR light on the window in a direct transmission path to said signal source, wherein said IR LED assembly includes a first set of IR LEDs and a second set of IR LEDs, said first set of IR LEDs transmitting said remote control signals in said indirect transmission path, said second set of IR LEDs transmitting said remote control signals in said direct transmission path.
- 2. The videocassette recorder of claim 1 wherein said window comprises first and second window sections, said first window section comprising:
- a first surface having serrations thereon for receiving a portion of said IR light, said portion of said IR light entering said first window section by passing through said serrations; and
- a second surface for transmitting said IR light, said portion of said IR light exiting said first window section via said second surface;
- said first and second surfaces of said first window section redirecting said IR light to substantially the opposite direction as the light emitting from said second window section.
- 3. The videocassette recorder of claim 2 wherein a predetermined orientation of said LED assembly includes said second set of IR LEDs mounted to direct IR light toward said first surface of said first window section and said first set of IR LEDs mounted to direct IR light through said second window section.
- 4. The videocassette recorder of claim 1, wherein said first set of IR LEDs and said second set of IR LEDs are disposed substantially perpendicular to each other.
- 5. The videocassette recorder of claim 1, wherein said first set of IR LEDs includes more LEDs than said second set of IR LEDs.
- 6. The videocassette recorder (VCR), comprising:
- a cabinet;
- an input terminal for receiving a television signal from a source of television signals external to said VCR;
- a remote control signal transmitter fixedly disposed on said cabinet for transmitting IR remote control remote control signals adapted to control said external source of television signals in response to a control signal;
- means for entering data by a user; and
- a processor coupled to said data entering means and said remote control signal transmitter for generating said control signal in response to data entered by said user;
- said remote control signal transmitter including an IR LED assembly having a plurality of LEDs disposed adjacent a window, said window having first and second window sections attached substantially orthogonal to each other, said first window section adapted to pass IR signals directly therethrough to transmit said remote control signals in an indirect transmission path to said external signal source, said second window adapted to deflect IR signals passing therethrough at an angle to an angle of incidence of the IR signals on the window in order to transmit said remote control signals in a direct transmission path to said external signal source, wherein said plurality of LEDs includes a first set of IR LEDs and a second set of IR LEDs, said first set of IR LEDs transmitting said remote control signals in said indirect transmission path, said second set of IR LEDs transmitting said remote control signals in said direct transmission path.
- 7. The videocassette recorder of claim 6, wherein said first window section comprises:
- a first surface having serrations thereon for receiving IR light, said IR light entering said first window section by passing through said serrations; and
- a second surface for transmitting said IR light, said IR light exiting said first window section via said second surface;
- said first and second surfaces of said first window section redirecting said IR light to substantially the opposite direction as the light emitting from said second window section.
- 8. The videocassette recorder of claim 6, wherein said first set of IR LEDs and said second set of IR LEDs are disposed substantially perpendicular to each other.
- 9. The videocassette recorder of claim 6, wherein said first set of IR LEDs includes more LEDs than said second set of IR LEDs.
