Claims
- 1. A pulsed irrigation surgical handpiece, comprising:
- a hollow housing comprising a handle;
- an elongate trigger extending along the front part of the handle;
- a suction tube and irrigation liquid tube extending side by side within said handle from the bottom of said handle along the front part of said handle to the top of said handle;
- an electric motor spaced between the top and bottom of said handle and located in the rear portion of said handle behind said suction tube and irrigation tube;
- a pump comprising an axially expandable and contractible bellows driven by said electric motor and connected to said irrigation liquid tube for pumping irrigation liquid for delivery to a surgical site.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said motor has a rotating pinion gear rotatably engagable with and driving a face gear, said face gear being operatively drivingly coupled to an eccentric member for rotation of said eccentric member by said motor, said bellows having an enclosed end opposing said eccentric member, and yoke means located between a closed end of said bellows and said eccentric member for converting rotation of said eccentric member to reciprocation of said closed end of said bellows.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said gears and eccentric lie behind said irrigation liquid and suction tubes.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said face gear is of diameter larger than the diameter of said pinion gear.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 in which the pump includes a bellows housing open to said bellows and therewith defining a pump chamber, said bellows and bellows housing having axially telescoped and axially extending annular flanges and including an O-ring snugly radially interposed between said flanges for sealing against irrigation liquid leakage from said bellows.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said motor has top and bottom ends and a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally from said top end toward the top of said handle, said motor bottom end being spaced above the bottom of said housing, a first electrical connector extending from the bottom of said motor toward said housing bottom, said electrical connector being for connection to an electric battery, means on a lower portion of said trigger adjacent said motor and responsive to pull in of said trigger for effecting a further electrical connection from said motor to an electric battery for electrically energizing said motor.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said housing comprises a forward opening barrel atop said handle, said pump having a substantially rigid hollow portion connected sealingly to and extending forward from said bellows along and in said barrel and defining a forward opening irrigation liquid port, a hollow connector being fixed side by side with said rigid hollow portion for sealed connection with an adjacent end of said suction tube and defining a forward opening suction port.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 including a suction/irrigation tip connectable to the said irrigation liquid and suction ports for delivering irrigation liquid and suction to a surgical site.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said trigger approximately corresponds in length to said handle.
- 10. The apparatus of claims 1 including a suction adapter comprising a tubular structure and clamp plate means fixed transversely thereon for fixedly engaging a free end wall of said handle bottom, said tubular structure having interior and exterior ends respectively extending into and out of said housing, said housing including a barrel extending forward from the top portion of said handle and a tip on the front end of said barrel, said suction tube being connected to said interior end of said tubular structure and running in said handle and barrel to a portion of said tip, said irrigation liquid tube being clamped to said handle bottom free end wall by said clamp plate means.
- 11. A pulsed irrigation surgical handpiece, comprising:
- a pulsed irrigation liquid outlet means for applying irrigation liquid pulses to a surgical site;
- a pump having a movable portion reciprocatingly driveable for pumping pulses of irrigation liquid through said outlet means;
- powered drive means comprising a hollow shell containing a motor and a link reciprocatingly driven by said motor, said link having an output end extending reciprocatingly from said shell to reciprocatingly drive said pump movable portion;
- a handpiece housing containing said pump and shell, said handpiece housing being elongate and bent and comprising a handle and a barrel, said barrel being open to and extending forward from an intersection with the top of the handle at an angle thereto, said hollow shell extending lengthwise along and within said handle into said angled intersection of said handle and barrel and locating said motor in said handle remote from said angled intersection, said link extending at said angle from said shell and handle forwardly into and along the length direction of said barrel, said pump movable portion extending along the length direction of said barrel and being reciprocatingly driven by said link in said length direction of said barrel.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 in which said shell comprises opposed first and second concave parts with respective first and second perimeter walls, a notch in said first perimeter wall, said link being guided for reciprocation on edges of said first perimeter wall bounding said notch and an edge of said second perimeter wall, said link having lengthwise guide faces slidable on said edges for guiding said link reciprocatingly.
- 13. A disposable, compact, self-contained, suction/irrigation surgical system, comprising:
- a motor powered irrigation pump;
- a handpiece including trigger means for regulating irrigation flow from said pump to a surgical site and including electric switch means and means on said handpiece for manually actuating such electrical switch means for controlling operation of said pump motor;
- a casing containing batteries and locatable remote from said handpiece and connected to said handpiece by an elongate irrigation liquid conduit and electrical wires running along said irrigation liquid conduit, said battery casing having a hollow spike means protruding from one end thereof for hanging said battery casing from a conventional irrigation liquid supply bag and for receiving irrigation liquid from such a bag, said hollow spike means comprising a hollow spike fixed to said casing and in liquid communication with said irrigation liquid conduit and adapted to insert in a conventional irrigation liquid bag outlet.
- 14. A disposable, compact, self-contained, pulsed irrigation, surgical system, comprising:
- a handheld handpiece housing carrying:
- (i) a pulsed irrigation liquid output tip for applying irrigation liquid pulses to a surgical site,
- (ii) a pump driveable for pumping pulses of irrigation liquid through said output tip,
- (iii) an electrical motor responsive to electrical energizing for driving said pump, and
- (iv) hand actuatable switch means electrically in circuit with said motor;
- a battery casing separate from and freely movable with respect to said handheld handpiece housing and containing electrical contacts for batteries;
- an elongate flexible irrigation liquid hose operatively connected to a liquid inlet of said pump and extending from said handpiece housing remotely to and then through one side of said battery casing, past said electrical contacts for batteries, to a fitting exposed on another side of said battery casing, said fitting having means for connecting directly and proximately to an irrigation liquid container;
- elongate flexible electrical conductors fixed with respect to, and running with, said elongate irrigation liquid hose from said battery contacts in said battery casing to said handpiece housing and thence to said motor and switch means in circuit with said motor for operation of said pump upon actuation of said switch means.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 including an irrigation liquid supply bag to be hung at a convenient location remote from a surgical site and having a gravity output fitting receiving said fitting on said battery casing for hanging said battery casing directly from said liquid supply bag.
- 16. A pulsed irrigation surgical handpiece, comprising:
- a pump for supplying pulsed irrigation liquid to a surgical site;
- drive means actuable for driving said pump;
- a handheld handpiece housing which carries said pump and drive means;
- an elongate, elastically bendable, self restoring trigger lever having (1) a relatively short, leaf spring-like, elastically bendable midportion interconnecting (2) an upper end portion attached to said housing and (3) a relatively long, rigid, swinging lower portion operatively connected to said drive means, fulcrum means operatively interposed between said trigger lever bendable midportion and said housing, for (1) elastic bending of said trigger lever midportion in response to a manual pull-in force on said trigger lever lower portion from a rest position toward the handpiece housing and for (2) elastic unbending of said trigger lever midportion away from the handpiece housing to spring away from said housing toward said rest position upon release of such manual pull-in force;
- control means carried by said housing and actuated by said elastic bending of said trigger lever for actuating said drive means.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16 including a leg fixed to said lower portion of said trigger lever and extending at an angle therefrom into said housing, said control means comprising an electrical conductive wiper on said leg slidably engageable with electrically conductive contacts fixed in said housing, and means on said leg for limiting pivoting of said trigger lever away from said housing beyond said rest position.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 in which said electrically conductive contacts are located to be engaged in sequence upon a gradual pull-in of said trigger lever, electrical power supply means having different voltage terminals connected to respective ones of said contacts to enable operation of said pump at different speeds, tactile feedback means interposed between said trigger lever and said housing for providing tactile feedback, to a hand of a user, of trigger leg position with respect to said fixed contacts.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 in which said tactile feedback means comprises surfaces of said wiper and a said electrical contact, engagable during movement of said trigger lever with respect to said housing and therewith providing said tactile feedback.
- 20. A pulsed irrigation surgical handpiece, comprising:
- a hollow housing comprising a handle;
- an elongate trigger extending along the front part of the handle;
- a suction tube and irrigation liquid tube extending side-by-side within said handle substantially the length of said handle to the top of said handle;
- an electric motor located in said handle, said tubes extending past said motor;
- a pump comprising an axially expandable and contractible bellows driven by said electric motor and connected to said irrigation liquid tube for pumping irrigation liquid for delivery to a surgical site;
- said motor having top and bottom ends and a rotatable shaft extending longitudinally from said top end toward the top of said handle, said motor bottom end being spaced above the bottom of said handle, a first electrical connector extending from the bottom of said motor toward said handle bottom, said electrical connector being for connection to an electric battery, means on a lower portion of said trigger adjacent said motor and responsive to pull in of said trigger for effecting a further electrical connection from said motor to an electric battery for electrically energizing said motor.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 in which said trigger extends substantially the length of the front of said handle, a bottom portion of said trigger being located inside said handle.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 20 in which said motor has a rotatable pinion gear extending therefrom toward the top of said handle and rotatably engaging and driving a face gear, an eccentric member operatively connected to and rotated by said face gear, said bellows having a closed drive end wall and a stub with an enlarged head extending from said bellows drive end wall, a member having one end portion interposed between said head and drive end wall and another end portion engaged by said eccentric member and converting rotation of said eccentric member to reciprocation of said drive end wall of said bellows.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22 in which said gears and eccentric lie behind said irrigation liquid and suction tubes.
