Claims
- 1. A system comprising:
- a telephone switch having a hot pluggable back plane with a variable length pin receptacle; and
- a non-hot pluggable adaptor card with variable length pins capable of being received into the receptacle of said back plane and having an ISA standard receptacle for receiving a conventional ISA-based standard telephony expansion (SCSA or MVIP) card, said adaptor card including:
- (a) means for detecting the insertion of the adaptor card into the receptacle of the said back plane,
- (b) means for immediately connecting the ground bus of the expansion card to the ground bus of the back plane through the ground bus of the adaptor card, and
- (c) means for delaying the connection of the signal bus of said back plane to the signal bus of the expansion card for a first predetermined period of time.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the adaptor card further comprises means for delaying the connection of the power bus of the back plane to the power bus of the expansion card for a second predetermined period of time, wherein the first predetermined period of time is longer than the second predetermined period of time.
- 3. A non-hot pluggable adaptor card for a plural pin, edge connector expansion card having a circuit which (a) is susceptible of damage by the application of power to the plural pins thereof in one of a first set of sequences and (b) not susceptible to damage by the application of power to the plural pins thereof in one of a second set of sequences, said adaptor card comprising:
- a female plural pin connector adapted to receive the male connectors of an expansion card which is susceptible to damage by the mating of the male connectors directly to a bus which is active at the time the expansion card is mated thereto, there being no selectivity in the timing of the mating of the pins of the female connectors of the adaptor card to the expansion card, and
- a plural pin male connector adapted for insertion into the female connector of a computer bus, said plural pin male connector being configured to provide selectivity in the timing of the relative mating of the pins of the adaptor card to the bus so that signals from the bus through the adaptor card in not applied to the adaptor until after the grounding of the ground bus of the adaptor card to the computer bus;
- a detector for detecting the connection of the adaptor card to the computer bus; and
- semiconductor switch means responsive to said detector for delaying the connection of the signal bus of the adaptor card for predetermined time interval.
- 4. A system comprising:
- a telephone switch having a hot pluggable back plane with a variable length pin receptacle; and
- a non-hot pluggable adaptor card with variable length pins capable of being received into the variable pin length receptacle of said back plane and having a receptacle for receiving a conventional standard pin length expansion card, said adaptor card including:
- (a) means for detecting the insertion of the adaptor card into the receptacle of said back plane,
- (b) means for immediately connecting the ground bus of the expansion card to the ground bus of the back plane through the ground bus of the adaptor card, and
- (c) means for delaying the connection of the signal bus of said back plane to the signal bus of the expansion card for a first predetermined period of time.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein the adaptor card further comprises means for delaying the connection of the power bus of the back plane to the power bus of the expansion card for a second predetermined period of time, wherein the first predetermined period of time is longer than the second predetermined period of time.
