Claims
- 1. A process for making isatins which comprises the steps of
- (1) subjecting a 3-hydrocarbonthiooxindole, having a hydrogen atom present as a further substituent on the 3-carbon atom thereof, to oxidative halogenation by reaction with an oxidating-halogenating agent under oxidative-halogenation reaction conditions to produce a 3-halo-3-hydrocarbon thiooxindole;
- (2) subjecting the formed 3-halo-3-hydrocarbonthiooxindole to hydrolysis with a hydrolyzing agent under hydrolysis conditions to produce an isatin; and,
- (3) isolating the thus-formed isatin.
- 2. The process of claim 1, in which the 3-hydrocarbonthiooxindole has the formula ##STR12## wherein Y and Z are hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower acyloxy, carbonyloxy-lower alkyl, or carboxyloxy-phenyl;
- R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical free of aliphatic unsaturation containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, inclusive and
- R.sup.1 is lower alkyl, phenyl, or benzyl.
- 3. The process of claim 2, in which the oxidative halogenation is effected with N-chlorosuccinimide.
- 4. The process of claim 2, in which the hydrolysis is effected in the presence of a sulfur scavenging agent.
- 5. The process of claim 2, in which the hydrolysis is effected in aqueous tetrahydrofuran without a sulfur scavenger.
- 6. The process of claim 4, in which the scavenging agent is mercuric oxide.
- 7. The process of claim 2, in which the hydrolysis is effected in the presence of a hydrolysis catalyst.
- 8. The process of claim 4, in which the hydrolysis is effected in the presence of a hydrolysis catalyst.
- 9. The process of claim 6, in which the hydrolysis is effected in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate.
- 10. The compound of the formula ##STR13## wherein X and Z are hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower acyloxy, carbonyloxyl-lower alkyl, or carboxyloxy-phenyl;
- R is hydrogen or a lower hydrogenated radical free of aliphatic unsaturation;
- R' is a lower hydrocarbon radical; and
- Hal is chlorine or bromine.
- 11. The compound of claim 10, 3-chloro-3-methylthiooxindole.
- 12. The compound of claim 10, 3-chloro-5-methyl-3-methylthiooxindole.
- 13. The compound of claim 10, 3-chloro-5-methoxy-3-methylthiooxindole.
- 14. The compound of claim 10, 3,5-dichloro-3-methylthiooxindole.

- 21. The compound of claim 10, 3-chloro-1-methyl-3-methylthiooxindole.
- 22. A compound of the formula ##STR14## wherein Y and Z are hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower acyloxy carbonyloxy-lower alkyl, or carboxyloxy-phenyl;
- R is hydrogen or a lower hydrogenated radical free of aliphatic unsaturation; and
- R' is lower hydrocarbon.
- 23. The compound of claim 22, 3,3-di(methylthio)oxindole.
- 24. The compound of claim 22, 3,3-di(methylthio)-5-methoxyoxindole.
- 25. A process which comprises the step of subjecting a 3-hydrocarbonthiooxindole, having a hydrogen atom present as a further substituent on the 3-carbon atom thereof, to oxidative halogenation by reaction with an oxidating-halogenating agent under oxidative-halogenation reaction conditions to produce a 3-halo-3-hydrocarbonthiooxindole.
