Claims
- 1. An isolated mechanical fastening system comprising:
an exterior first section having a first transverse bore, wherein a first inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the first transverse bore; an exterior second section having a second transverse bore, wherein said second transverse bore is aligned with said first transverse bore and a second inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the second transverse bore; an interior third section having a third transverse aperture, wherein said third section is interposed between said first section and said second section and said third transverse bore is aligned with said first and second transverse bores and a third inner peripheral wall is on said third section adjacent the third transverse bore; a fastening means positioned in the first, second and third transverse bores and means for fixing said fastening means to the first section; and an annular polymeric element positioned between the fastening means and the third inner peripheral wall of the third section.
- 2. The mechanical fastening system of claim 1 wherein the first, second and third sections are each plates.
- 3. The mechanical fastening system of claim 2 wherein the first and second sections are each metal.
- 4. The mechanical fastening system of claim 3 wherein the third section is selected from the group consisting of metal and a reinforced polymer composite material.
- 5. The mechanical fastening system of claim 4 wherein the second section is a reinforced polymer composite material, which is reinforced with a carbonaceous material.
- 6. The mechanical fastening system of claim 4 wherein the second section is selected from the group consisting of a fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) material and a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) material.
- 7. The mechanical fastening system of claim 1 wherein the fastening means is a bolt having a shaft with a helical screw thread and a head, and the head of said bolt is positioned adjacent the second section.
- 8. The mechanical fastening system of claim 7 wherein there is a helical screw thread on said first inner peripheral wall of the first section, and said helical screw thread on said first inner peripheral wall engages the screw thread on the shaft of the bolt.
- 9. The mechanical fastening system of claim 1 wherein the annular polymeric element is a polyurethane having a modulus of elasticity of from about 10,000 psi to about 100,000 psi.
- 10. An isolated mechanical fastening system comprising:
an exterior first section comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of titanium and stainless steel and having a first transverse bore, wherein a first inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the first transverse bore; an exterior second section comprised of a metal selected from the group consisting of titanium and stainless steel and having a second transverse bore, wherein said second transverse bore is aligned with said first transverse bore and a second inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the second transverse bore; an interior third section comprised of a reinforced polymer composite material which is reinforced with a carbonaceous material having a third transverse aperture, wherein said third section is interposed between said first section and said second section and said third transverse bore is aligned with said first and second transverse bores and a third inner peripheral wall is on said third section adjacent the third transverse bore; a fastening means positioned in the first, second and third transverse bores and means for fixing said fastening means to the first section; and an annular polymeric element comprised of a polyurethane having a modulus of elasticity between about 10,000 psi and about 100,000 psi and positioned between the fastening means and the third inner peripheral wall of the third section.
- 11. A product of a process for installing an isolated mechanical fastening system comprising the steps of:
providing an exterior first section having a first transverse bore, wherein a first inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the first transverse bore; providing an exterior second section having a second transverse bore, wherein said second transverse bore is aligned with said first transverse bore and a second inner peripheral wall is on said first section adjacent the second transverse bore; providing an interior third section having a third transverse aperture, wherein said third section is interposed between said first section and said second section and said third transverse bore is aligned with said first and second transverse bores and a third inner peripheral wall is on said third section adjacent the third transverse bore; providing a fastening means positioned in the first, second and third transverse bores and fixing said fastening means to the first section; and injecting a polymeric material between the fastening means and the third inner peripheral wall of the third section.
- 12. The product of the process of claim 11 wherein the first, second and third sections are each plates.
- 13. The product of the process of claim 12 wherein the first and second sections are each metal.
- 14. The product of the process of claim 13 wherein the third section is selected from the group consisting of metal and a reinforced polymer composite material.
- 15. The product of the process of claim 14 wherein the second section is a reinforced polymer composite material, which is reinforced with a carbonaceous material.
- 16. The product of the process of claim 14 wherein the second section is selected from the group consisting of a fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) material and a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) material.
- 17. The product of the process of claim 11 wherein the fastening means is a bolt having a shaft with a helical screw thread and a head, and the head of said bolt is positioned adjacent the second section.
- 18. The product of the process of claim 17 wherein there is a helical screw thread on said first inner peripheral wall of the first section, and said helical screw thread on said first inner peripheral wall engages the screw thread on the shaft of the bolt.
- 19. The product of the process of claim 11 wherein the polymeric material is a polyurethane having a modulus of elasticity of from about 10,000 psi to about 100,000 psi.
- 20. The product of the process of claim 11 wherein the polymeric material is injected after the fastening means initially enters the first bore, but before the fastening means is fully seated in the first bore.
