Claims
- 1. A catalyst complex for promoting alkylation of an isoparaffin with an olefin, said catalyst complex formed by reacting BF.sub.3 and at least one fluorophosphoric acid selected from the group consisting of H.sub.2 PO.sub.3 F and H.sub.2 PO.sub.2 F.sub.2 in molar ratios of from about 0.5:1 to about 1.5:1, and contacting said reaction product with a stream containing excess BF.sub.3 in concentration of from about 10 ppm (weight) to about 10000 ppm (weight) of the total isoparaffin and olefin feed.
- 2. The catalyst complex of claim 1 wherein said stream contains excess BF.sub.3 in concentration of from about 50 ppm to about 5000 ppm of the total isoparaffin and olefin feed.
- 3. The catalyst complex of claim 2 wherein said stream contains excess BF.sub.3 in concentration of form about 100 ppm to about 1000 ppm of the total isoparaffin and olefin feed.
- 4. A continuous process for the alkylation of an isoparaffin with an olefin comprising the steps of:
- (a) contacting boron trifluoride and a fluorophosphoric acid in molar ratios of from about 0.5:1 to about 1.5:1 to evolve a reaction product and contacting said reaction product with a stream containing from about 10 ppm (weight) to about 10000 ppm (weight) excess boron trifluouride based on the total isoparaffin and olefin feed to form a catalyst complex; and
- (b) reacting an isoparaffin containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms with an olefin containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms in an alkylation reaction zone in the presence of said catalyst complex of step (a) under conversion conditions including temperature of from about -40.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C. and pressure in the range of subatmospheric to about 5000 psig.
- 5. The process of claim 4 further comprising withdrawing a product stream containing gasoline boiling range hydrocarbons and catalyst complex from said alkylation reaction zone of step (b) and recycling at least a portion of said catalyst complex to said alkylation reaction zone.
- 6. The process of claim 5 further comprising decanting said product stream of step into a hydrocarbon phase and a catalyst complex phase.
- 7. The process of claim 6 further comprising deacidifying said hydrocarbon phase.
- 8. The process of claim 6 wherein said deacidification step comprises sorbing acidic components from said hydrocarbon phase.
- 9. The process of claim 6 further comprising contacting said hydrocarbon phase with a Lewis base.
