Claims
- 1. In an improved arrangement for "end-wise" pneumatic partitioning of a pack of floppy disks, this pack including conduit means for conduction of pneumatic partitioning forces axially, up through the pack, to introduce a prescribed partition gap between selected adjacent disks; the arrangement comprising, in combination therewith;
- pneumatic partitioning means arranged and adapted to selectively present partitioning thrust forces into at least a portion of said conduit means so as to introduce said gap between any selected adjacent pairs of said disks,
- the partitioning means is outside the pack and is adapted to cooperate with one or more gas supply means and comprises: distributor means adapted to present an array of conductor passage means adapted to register with said conduit means and be rotated in synchronism therewith;
- plus selector means adapted to present one or more input, apertures in gas-conducting relation with a selected one, or ones, of said passage means, each of said apertures being in communication with a respective one of said gas supply means.
- 2. The combination as recited in claim 1 wherein said gas supply means comprise a high-pressure air stream and a low-pressure air stream; and where the Selector means is adapted to selectably couple the high-pressure stream to at least one of said passage means and to also couple said low-pressure stream to others of said passage means in said Distributor means.
- 3. An "end-wise partitionable" disk drive comprising:
- a plurality of flexible recording disks and intermediate spacer means, all apertured so as to generate an array of partition bores, each communicating with a different respective inter-disk gap;
- axially-offset pneumatic partition means adapted to partition the pack and expose one or more selected disk surfaces thereof by selectively directing at least one jet of pressurized air through selected associated ones of said bores;
- said partition means being disposed outside the confines of the pack and characterized by ducted distributor means and by associated duct-select means adapted to direct such jets through associated selected passageways of the distributor means and into associated communicating bores.
- 4. The combination as recited in claim 3, wherein said Distributor means includes an array of passageways and is adapted to be co-rotated with the pack so that each passageway is kept in communication with a respective bore.
- 5. The combination as recited in claim 4, wherein each passageway terminates, at the end thereof opposite the associated bore at a respective inlet means, and wherein said duct-Select means includes at least one outlet means associated with each said air jet and is arranged to effect duct selection, and application thereto of a selected one of said jets, by controlled manipulation to register one of said outlet means with a selected one of said passageway inlet means.
- 6. In an improved arrangement for pneumatic partitioning of a pack of floppy disks, this pack including an array of conduit means for directing one or more air streams axially and up through the pack for various purposes, including the introduction of a partitioning gap between selected disks; this arrangement comprising:
- external pneumatic partitioning means disposed outside the confines of said pack and rotatable relative thereto and displaced axially therefrom;
- the partitioning means including Distributor means serving, essentially, to extend each conduit means outside the pack to a different respective intake-locus, and Select means adapted to receive the air streams; and to selectively couple each of said airstreams to one or more of said conduit means.
- 7. An improved pneumatic supply arrangement adapted to supply at least one air stream to a flexible disk pack, end-wise, this pack being characterized by an array of bores extending axially through the pack cross-section, the bores terminating at various inter-disk gaps for conducting one of said air streams thereto;
- this arrangement comprising, in combination therewith:
- conduction means arranged to present an array of passages registering with associated respective bores; and
- select means disposed externally of said pack and adapted to couple a partitioning air stream to any selected one, or ones, of said passages and communicating bores,
- said select means is arranged and adapted to be coupled to an array of different jet-inject sites along a prescribed selection plane extending axially away from said pack;
- this select means being operated conjointly with said conduction means,
- this arrangement being thus adapted to selectively direct one or several jets of pressurized air through a selected one, or ones, of said sites and corresponding bores.
- 8. An improved method of partitioning a flexible disk pack which includes an array of gas-conducting bores extending axially, i.e., end-wise, of the pack, this method comprising the steps of:
- providing one or more pressurized gas streams;
- arranging distributor means including conduit means adjacent the pack to co-rotate therewith, this conduit means including an array of conduits, each in registry with a respective one of said bores and extending axially away from the pack to a respective entry-site, each such site being disposed at a different respective position relative to said pack;
- providing an associated, non-rotating select means coupled to receive said at least one of said gas streams and adapted to selectively couple a respective stream to one or more of said conduits at a respective entry-site; and
- automatically selecting said sites for communication with a respective gas stream by operating said Select means so as to effect such communication.
