Claims
- 1. A joint connector for use in space frames comprising:
- an integral, one-piece, tubular hub having a wall, and first and second ends with a gripping jaw being located on said first end, and hub fastening means being located on said second end, said gripping jaw including a flange spaced from said hub wall and surrounding said hub wall;
- a one-piece clamping ring having integral fastening means for cooperating with said hub fastening means to releasably secure said clamping ring to said tubular hub, said clamping ring including a flange which is spaced from said hub wall and extending toward said gripping jaw flange when said clamping ring is secured to said hub;
- a plurality of at least five struts each of which radiates outwardly and downwardly from the connector and each of which includes a pair of grooves each positioned to accommodate one of said flanges of said clamping ring and gripping jaw for sandwiching said strut therebetween to attach said strut to said hub; and
- means for resisting snap-through buckling of the joint including each strut having an end portion which is arcuate and has a radius of curvature matching the curvature of said tubular hub wall, said end portion of each strut also being sloped to match the slope of said strut so that said strut end bears directly against the wall of said integral, one-piece tubular hub.
- 2. A joint connector as set forth in claim 1, wherein each one of said plurality of at least five struts includes a top flange longitudinally the length thereof.
- 3. A joint connector as set forth in claim 1, wherein each one of said plurality of at least five struts includes a bottom flange longitudinally the length thereof.
- 4. A joint connector as set forth in claim 2, wherein each one of said plurality of at least five struts is of I-beam construction and includes both a top and bottom flange.
- 5. A joint connector as set forth in claim 2, wherein said flanges are triangular in cross-sectional shape, and each of said pair of grooves in each of said struts is of complementary triangular shape.
- 6. A joint connector as set forth in claim 5, wherein at least one of each of said pair of grooves is of greater depth than the corresponding flange with which it is mated.
- 7. A joint connector as set forth in claim 6, wherein each one of said plurality of at least five struts is of I-beam construction and includes both top and bottom flange.
- 8. A joint connector as set forth in claim 7, further including said fastening means comprising screw threads of fast thread configuration, and a cover over said clamping ring, said cover having a skirt around the outer periphery thereof to form flashing between the joint connector and roof panels as supported by the plurality of struts.
- 9. A joint connector as set forth in claim 8, wherein said cover has an inner side for gripping the outer periphery of said clamping ring for holding same in snap-on place thereon.
- 10. A joint connector as set forth in claim 1, wherein means is defined in said one-piece clamping ring for accommodating a torquing device.
- 11. A joint connector as set forth in claim 10, wherein said means includes at least one notch provided in the outer circumference of said clamping ring.
- 12. A joint connector as set forth in claim 11, wherein said means includes a pair of said notches which are on diametrically opposite sides of said clamping ring for accommodating a spanner wrench.
- 13. A joint connector as set forth in claim 4, wherein means is defined in said one-piece clamping ring for accommodating a torquing device.
- 14. A joint connector as set forth in claim 13, wherein said means includes at least one notch provided in the outer circumference of said clamping ring.
- 15. A joint connector as set forth in claim 14, wherein said means includes a pair of said notches which are on diametrically opposite sides of said clamping ring for accommodating a spanner wrench.
- 16. A joint connector as set forth in claim 5, wherein means is defined in said one-piece clamping ring for accommodating a torquing device.
- 17. A joint connector as set forth in claim 16, wherein said means includes at least one notch provided in the outer circumference of said clamping ring.
- 18. A joint connector as set forth in claim 17, wherein said means includes a pair of said notches which are on diametrically opposite sides of said clamping ring for accommodating a spanner wrench.
