Claims
- 1. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having a first thickness; a second plate, the second plate having a second thickness, the second plate overlapping the first plate along a widened seam; the widened seam defined by a first elongated edge of the first plate and a second elongated edge on the second plate; and a weld joining the first plate to the second plate only along the first elongated edge.
- 2. The joint isolation system of claim 1, wherein the second elongated edge is chamfered.
- 3. The joint isolation system of claim 1, wherein the second plate includes at least one aperture disposed along the widened seam, the aperture defining an internal edge abutting a face of the first plate, and including a perimeter weld joining the internal edge to the face of the first plate.
- 4. The joint isolation system of claim 1, wherein the second plate includes a plurality of apertures disposed along the widened seam and exposing a portion of the face of the first plate, each of the apertures including an internal edge abutting the face of the first plate, and including a perimeter weld along at least a portion of the internal edge joining the internal edge of the second plate to the face of the first plate, and further wherein the second elongated edge is chamfered.
- 5. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having an elongated edge and a face, the first plate further having a first thickness; a second plate, the second plate having an elongated edge and a second thickness; the first and second plates overlapping each other to define a widened seam bounded at least in part by the elongated edges of the first and second plates; a weld joining the first plate to the second plate, the weld arranged so that the elongated edge of the second plate is free of attachment to the face of the first plate.
- 6. The joint isolation system of claim 5, wherein the second elongated edge is chamfered.
- 7. The joint isolation system of claim 5, wherein the second plate includes at least one aperture disposed along the widened seam, the aperture defining an internal edge abutting the face of the first plate, and including a perimeter weld arranged in the aperture to join the internal edge to the face of the first plate.
- 8. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having an elongated edge, a top side, and a face, the first plate further having a first thickness; a second plate, the second plate having an elongated edge and a second thickness; the first and second plates overlapping each other to define a widened seam bounded at least in part by the elongated edge of the first plate and the elongated edge of the second plate; and means for joining the elongated edge of the first plate to the second plate, the means arranged to permit at least a portion of the second plate disposed along the widened seam to apply a resisting load to the face of the first plate in response to the application of a load against an opposing face of the first plate.
- 9. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having an elongated edge, a first face, a second face, and having a first thickness; a second plate, the second plate having an elongated edge and a second thickness; the first and second plates overlapping each other to define a widened seam bounded at least in part by the elongated edges of the first plate and the second plate; and a weld disposed along the elongated edge of the first plate joining the elongated edge of the first plate to an adjacent surface of the second plate, the weld and at least a portion of the second plate disposed along the widened seam cooperating to permit the second plate to apply a resisting load to the first face of the first plate in response to the application of a load against the second face of the first plate.
- 10. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, the dump body defining a payload space, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having a first face and a second face, the first face adapted to receive an applied load from the payload space in a first direction generally perpendicular to a plane of the first plate; a supporting member arranged to resist a load in the first direction; a second plate disposed generally parallel to the first plate and between the supporting member and the first plate, the second plate having an elongated edge abutting the second face of the first plate, the second plate further having a surface facing the supporting member; a weld joining the supporting member to the surface of the second plate; a plurality of apertures defined in the second plate, each of the apertures including a peripheral edge abutting an adjacent exposed portion of the second face of the first plate, each of the apertures defining an internal edge abutting the second face of the first plate; and a perimeter weld arranged along the peripheral edge of the apertures to join the second plate to the second face of the first plate.
- 11. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, the dump body defining a payload space, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having a first face and a second face, the first face adapted to receive an applied load from the payload space in a first direction generally perpendicular to a plane of the first plate; a supporting member arranged to resist a load in the first direction; a second plate disposed generally parallel to the first plate, the second plate having an elongated edge abutting the second face of the first plate, the second plate further having a surface facing the supporting member; a weld joining the supporting member to the second face of the first plate, and joining the supporting member to the surface of the second plate; a plurality of apertures defined in the second plate, each of the apertures including a peripheral edge abutting an adjacent exposed portion of the second face of the first plate, each of the apertures defining an internal edge abutting the second face of the first plate; and a perimeter weld arranged along the peripheral edge of the apertures to join the second plate to the second face of the first plate.
- 12. For use on a dump body of on an off-highway rubber-tired haulage vehicle, the dump body defining a payload space, a joint isolation system comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having a first face and a second face, the first face adapted to receive an applied load from the payload space in a first direction generally perpendicular to a plane of the first plate; a supporting member arranged to resist a load in the first direction; a second plate disposed generally parallel to the supporting member, the second plate having an elongated edge abutting the supporting member; a weld joining the supporting member to the second face of the first plate, and joining the supporting member to the surface of the second plate; a plurality of apertures defined in the second plate, each of the apertures including a peripheral edge abutting an adjacent exposed portion of the supporting member, each of the apertures defining an internal edge abutting the supporting member; and a perimeter weld arranged along the peripheral edge of the apertures to join the second plate to the supporting member.
- 13. The joint isolation system of claim 12, further comprising a third plate disposed generally parallel to the first plate, the third plate having an elongated edge joined to the first surface of the first plate.
- 14. The joint isolation system of claim 13, further comprising a plurality of apertures defined in the third plate, each of the apertures including a peripheral edge abutting an adjacent exposed portion of the first face of the first plate, each of the apertures defining an internal edge abutting the first face of the first plate and a perimeter weld arranged along the peripheral edge of the apertures to join the third plate to the first plate.
- 15. A method of forming a stress isolating joint, comprising the steps of:
providing a first plate, the first plate having an elongated edge and a face, the first plate further having a first thickness; providing a second plate, the second plate having an elongated edge; positioning the first and second plates adjacent each other in overlapping relationship to thereby define a widened seam bounded at least in part by the elongated edge of the first plate and the elongated edge of the second plate; and welding the first plate to the second plate only exclusively along the elongated edge of the first plate.
- 16. The method of claim 15, including the step of chamfering the elongated edge of the second plate.
- 17. The method of claim 15, including the steps of providing at least one aperture though the second plate, the apertures spaced from the elongated edge of the second plate so as to be disposed along the widened seam, the aperture defining an internal edge abutting the face of the first plate, and forming a perimeter weld in the aperture to join at least a portion of the internal edge to the face of the first plate.
- 18. A joint construction for fabricated metal structures comprising:
a first plate, the first plate having a face; a second plate, the second plate having a face disposed in abutment with the face of the first plate, the face of the second plate sized smaller than the face of the first plate to define a line of intersection; welds means for joining the first plate and the second plate to each other, the weld means exclusive of a weld at the line of the intersection.
- 19. The joint construction of claim 18, wherein the second plate includes an edge portion disposed along the line of intersection, and wherein the edge portion is chamfered.
- 20. The joint construction of claim 18, wherein the second plate includes an edge, and wherein the weld means is defined at least in part by at least one aperture in the second plate, the aperture spaced away from the edge of the second plate, the aperture defining an internal edge abutting the face of the first plate, the weld means including a perimeter weld arranged in the aperture to join the internal edge to the face of the first plate.
