Claims
- 1. A system for positioning one or more prosthetic devices in conjunction with joint-replacement surgery, comprising:
a first component having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being shaped for installation onto a first bone associated with a joint; a second component having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being shaped for installation onto a second bone associated with the joint; and at least one of the components further including one or more bone cutting guides, whereby the bones may be reduced with the components installed to test the joint, with the outer surfaces of the two components being such that when aligned relative to one another during a trial joint reduction, a desired joint orientation may be achieved enabling the bone to be shaped using the cutting guides to receive the prosthetic device and returned to the desired orientation.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the components and prosthetic device are associated with knee-replacement surgery.
- 3. The system of claim 1, further including a cutting guide extension member connected to the component having the cutting guides, the extension member being operative to at least temporarily provide a larger surface area against which a cutting tool may rest to enhance stabilization during resection.
- 4. A method of shaping a bone to receive a prosthesis, comprising the steps of:
providing a combination trial and cutting guide having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being shaped for conformance with a bone to be modified, and the outer surface being geometrically indexed to the articulating surface of the prosthesis; performing a trial joint reduction including the bone having the combination trial and cutting guide temporarily installed thereon; shaping the bone with the cutting guide so that the prosthesis will achieve a desired orientation in accordance with the geometric indexing; removing the combination trial and cutting guide; and affixing the prosthesis to the bone.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the bone is a distal femur.
- 6. The method of claim 4, wherein the outer surface is substantially planar.
- 7. The method of claim 4, wherein the prosthesis is associated with cruciate-sacrifice joint-replacement surgery, and wherein the step of shaping the bone, includes the step of performing one or more intercondylar box cuts.
- 8. The method of claim 7, further including the step of providing a bone-cutting saw having a concave curved distal end to perform at least one of the box cuts.
- 9. The method of claim 7, further including the step of providing a bone-cutting saw having a bent blade to perform at least one of the box cuts.
- 10. The method of claim 7, further including the step of referencing the fibula to determine the desired orientation.
