Claims
- 1. A control mechanism for controlling a justifying typographic apparatus having a carriage, for assuring the performance of a sequence of steps in an operational cycle which is determined by (i) a first step of said carriage for correspondingly shifting a print point in a line, and (ii) a last step in said sequence comprising a carriage return step in said line, said typographic apparatus comprising means for producing justification data corresponding to said line, comprising manually operable control means for actuating said means for producing justification data, said manually operable control means being shiftable between an "on" position and an "off" position, locking means coupled to selectively lock said manually operable control means, actuating means operatively connected to said locking means for bringing the locking means into locking position in response to said first step of an operational cycle, latch means operatively connected to said locking means for latching said locking means in said locking position and release means for releasing said latch means in response to the last step of said operational cycle, whereby change of the operational state of said means for producing justification data is inhibited in steps of said sequence between said first step and said last step.
- 2. A control mechanism for controlling a justifying typographic apparatus having a carriage, for assuring the performance of a sequence of steps in an operational cycle which is determined by (i) a first step of said carriage for correspondingly shifting a print point in a line, and (ii) a last step in said sequence comprising a carriage return step in said line, said typographic apparatus comprising means for producing reproduction control data corresponding to said line, comprising manually operable control means for actuating said means for producing reproduction control data, said manually operable control means being shiftable between an "on" position and an "off" position, locking means coupled to selectively lock said manually operable control means, actuating means operatively connected to said locking means for bringing the locking means into locking position in response to said first step of an operational cycle, latch means operatively connected to said locking means for latching said locking means in said locking position and release means for releasing said latch means in response to the last step of said operational cycle, whereby change of the operational state of said means for producing reproduction cycle data is inhibited in steps of said sequence between said first step and said last step.
- 3. In a typographic composing apparatus having means for recording information on a recording medium, a plurality of first manually operable controls at least some of which correspond to characters and are coupled to actuate said recording means for recording information on said recording medium, each of said controls being arranged to advance a print point on said recording medium at which next received information will be recorded, carriage return control means operable to separate information recorded on said recording medium into groups of recorded information corresponding to separate lines, and conditioning means operable in response to operation of said manually operable controls and said carriage return control means for producing conditioning data corresponding to said lines, said conditioning means comprising second manually operable control means having an "on" position in which said conditioning means is operative to produce conditioning data and an "off" position in which said conditioning means is not operational to produce conditioning data; the improvement comprising latch means coupled to said conditioning means and responsive to the manual operation of the first of said first manually operable controls in a line for inhibiting changes of at least one operational state of said conditioning means by said second manually operable control means, and release means coupled to said latch means and responsive to operation of said carriage return control means for releasing said latch means to thereby enable control of said conditioning means by said second manually operable control means.
- 4. The typographic composing apparatus of claim 3 wherein said conditioning means comprises means for producing justification data, and said latch means is responsive to the manual operation of the first of said first manually operable controls in a line for inhibiting changing said means for producing justification data from a non-operational state to an operational state.
- 5. The typographic composing apparatus of claim 3 wherein said conditioning means comprises means for producing justification data, and said latch means is responsive to the manual operation of the first of said first manually operable controls in a line for inhibiting the changing of said means for producing justification data from an operational state to a non-operational state.
- 6. The typographic composing apparatus of claim 3 wherein said conditioning means comprises means for producing justification data, and said latch means is responsive to the manual operation of the first of said first manually operable controls in a line for inhibiting changing said means for producing justification data from an operational state to a non-operational state, and from a non-operational state to an operational state.
- 7. The typographic apparatus of claim 3 wherein said second manually operable control means comprises a manually operable lever, and said latch means comprises a locking lever positioned to inhibit movement of said manually operable lever.
- 8. The typographic composing apparatus of claim 7 wherein said latch means further comprises a latching lever, and means resiliently biasing said latching lever to lock said locking lever in a locking position.
- 9. The typographic composing apparatus of claim 8 wherein said release means comprises means responsive to said carriage return control means for releasing said latching lever from latching engagement with said locking lever.
