Claims
- 1. A dividing and encoding apparatus comprising:
- first dividing and encoding switching means comprising a number of electrically conducting first slide means, means for electrically contacting said first slide means and insulatedly supporting said first slide means for movement back and forth between a normal position and an excursion position,
- dividend input means comprising amount left-in-a-line measuring means for measuring the amount left in a line, and first solenoid means responsive to said amount left-in-a-line measuring means, first means for coupling said first slide means to said first solenoid means for moving the first slide means to an excursion position,
- second dividing and encoding switching means comprising second slide means arranged in a number of group assemblies, each of said group assemblies comprising a number of electrically conducting dividing and encoding slide plates, means for insulatedly and movably supporting said dividing and encoding slide plates, whereby each of said slide plates is insulated from any other one of said slide plates and whereby each of said group of said assemblies of slide plates is movable back and forth between a normal position and an excursion position,
- divisor input means comprising word space counter means, second solenoid means and third solenoid means responsive to said word space counter means, second means for coupling the second solenoid means to respective ones of said group assemblies for selecting any one of said group assemblies in response to said word space counter means, and third means for couplng said third solenoid means to the group assemblies for moving a selected one of said group assemblies of said slide plates from its normal position to an excursion position also in response to said word space counter means, a source of current connected to said first slide means, and
- output circuit means comprising a plurality of sationary contact bars and means for insulatedly supporting said contact bars which are arranged to be contacted in a code channel relationship by said slide plates in their excursion positions whereby coded output signals are produced at said output circuit means which said output signals represent an appropriate quotient and remainder.
- 2. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising means operatively connected to said second slide means and to said group assemblies for normally keeping said second slide means and the said group assemblies in the respective normal position between excursion positions.
- 3. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said supporting means for each group of slide plates comprise two motivatable support plates and insulating blocks which secure the slide plates and the support plates together so that these plates are arranged in parallel to each other and insulated from each other with the slide plates held between the two support plates, said support plates comprising hook means for connecting a selected group assembly to said third solenoid means.
- 4. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first slide means are arranged transversely between first and second groups of said second slide means whereby said first slide means may cooperate with said first and second groups of second slide means.
- 5. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said first slide means are arranged in pairs, each pair including one slide bar for cooperation with said first groups of second slide means, and another slide bar for cooperation with said second groups of second slide means.
- 6. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said first slide means comprise cam means and guide means.
- 7. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said third solenoid means comprise one set of solenoids for motivating said slide plates in response to an odd number of word spaces counted by said word space counter means and another set of solenoids for motivating said slide plates in response to an even number of word spaces counted by said word space counter means, said motivating taking place preferably in two opposite directions.
- 8. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, comprising delay means arranged for cooperation with said second and third solenoid means so that the motivating third solenoid means become effective after the proper group selection has been made by the second solenoid means.
- 9. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 5, further comprising means arranged for cooperation with said pairs of first slide means and said first solenoid means to assure that only one pair of first slide means are actuated at any one time.
- 10. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 5, wherein each of said dividing and encoding slide plates of the second slide means comprises a first longitudinal contact rail, a second longitudinal contact rail, and a longitudinal spring member for interconnecting opposite ends of said first and second contact rails with each other whereby the other opposite ends of said rails remain free, and means for insulatedly supporting said slide plates in said group assemblies.
- 11. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said first and second contact rails have edges facing away from said spring member, said edges being provided with contact nibs.
- 12. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said output circuit means comprise a first set of wires, means for connecting said first set of wires to certain ones of said stationary contact bars, a second set of wires and means for connecting said second set of wires to other ones of said stationary contact bars whereby one set of wires provides quotient output signals and the other set of wires provides remainder output signals.
- 13. The dividing and encoding apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said group assemblies of second slide means, said first slide means, and said stationary contact bars are arranged relative to each other for cooperation in accordance with a predetermined coding system.
- 14. A dividing and encoding apparatus for encoding justifying information in a justifying composing machine, comprising:
- first dividing and encoding switching means, second dividing and encoding switching means arranged for cooperation with said first dividing and encoding switching means, dividend and divisor input means comprising means for energizing the respective switching means in response to dividend and divisor input signals respectively, first and second output circuit means connected respectively to said first and second dividing and encoding switching means for producing an encoded quotient representative signal and an encoded remainder representative signal at said first and second output circuit means, amount left-in-a-line measuring means and a word space counter connected to said input means, a recording device including a record medium, means for advancing the record medium through the recording device in a given direction, a plurality of recording means in said recording device and arranged in a code channel relationship, means for connecting said recording means to said output circuit means and to energize said recording means for recording said coded output signals on said record medium in said code channel relationship in response to the output signals of said dividing and encoding apparatus, and means responsive to said word space counter and amount-left-in-a-line measuring means for preventing the recording of a word space code on aid record medium as the last encoded text information for any line of text.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said recording means comprise a plurality of sets of encoding means, including a set of quotient value encoding means and a set of remainder value encoding means, actuating means, means for coupling said actuating means to respective ones of said encoding means and means for connecting said output circuit means to said actuating means.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 14, further comprising a carriage and main reader means, said plurality of recording means comprising text and carriage return code encoding means for encoding text information and for encoding a carriage return code at the end of a line of encoded text information, normally open switch means connected to said record medium advancing means and responsive to the conclusion of a recording by said recording means for advancing a length of record medium through said recording means, said length of record medium being sufficient for the entering of said carriage return code into said main reader means.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 16, further comprising means for accumulating said record medium in a loop upstream of said main reader means.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein said quotient value and remainder value encoding means are punches for encoding justifying information, said apparatus further comprising means operatively connected to said justifying information encoding punches for returning said punches into their normal position, and means for advancing said record medium in response to the return of said punches following the encoding of the justifying information.
- 19. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein said amount left-in-a-line measuring means comprises commutator means connected to said dividend input means, and wherein said word space counter comprises further commutator means connected to said divisor input means, whereby said recording device is controlled in response to said dividing and encoding apparatus.
- 20. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said record medium is a tape, said means for advancing said record medium comprising sprocket wheels, means for driving said sprocket wheels in a stepping fashion through said recording device, said plurality of recording means comprising text and function information recording means and justifying information recording means, said text and function information recording means being arranged upstream of said justifying information recording means, said justifying information recording means being arranged upstream of said main reader means all as viewed in the direction of advance of said tape, said text and function information recording means being spaced from said justifying information recording means to provide a first gap therebetween, said justifying information recording means being spaced from said main reader means to provide a second gap therebetween, means for accumulating respective tape loops in said first and second gaps, means for selectively eliminating said tape loops, and switching means responsive to said eliminating of said tape loops for controllling the cooperation of said apparatus.
- 21. A dividing and encoding apparatus for encoding justifying information in a justifying composing machine, comprising
- first dividing and encoding switching means, second dividing and encoding switching means arranged for cooperation with said first dividing and encoding switching means, dividend and divisor input means comprising means for energizing the respective switching means in response to dividend and divisor input signals respectively first and second output circuit means connected respectively to said first and second dividing and encoding switching means for producing encoded quotient representative signals and encoded remainder representative signals at said first and second output circuit means, amount left-in-a-line measuring means and a word space counter connected to said input means, said amount-left-in-a-line measuring means comprising commutator means connected to said dividend input means, and said word space counter comprising further commutator means connected to said divisor input means, a recording device including a tape, means for advancing the tape through the recording device in a given direction, a plurality of recording means in said recording device and arranged in a code channel relationship, means for connecting said recording means to said first and second output circuit means and to energize said recording means for recording said encoded quotient representative signals and said encoded remainder representative signals on said tape in said code channel relationship in response to said first and second output signals of said dividing and encoding apparatus, means responsive to said word space counter and amount-left-in-a-line measuring means for preventing the recording of a word space code on said tape as the last encoded text information for any line of text, said means for advancing said tape comprising sprocket wheels, means for driving said sprocket wheels in a stepping fashion through said recording device, said plurality of recording means comprising text and function information recording means and justifying information recording means, said text and function information recording means being arranged upstream of said justifying information recording means, said justifying information recording means being arranged upstream a main reader means for reading the encoded information all as viewed in the direction of advance of said tape, said text and function information recording means being spaced from said justifying information recording means to provide a first gap therebetween, said justifying information recording means being spaced from said main reader means to provide a second gap therebetween, means for accumulating respective tape loops in said first and second gaps, means for selectively eliminating said tape loops, switching means responsive to said eliminating of said tape loops for controlling the cooperating of said apparatus, and a backspace reader located between said text and function information recording means and said justifying information recording means adjacent to said first gap.
- 22. A dividing and encoding apparatus for encoding justifying information in a justifying composing machine comprising: first dividing and encoding switching means, second dividing and encoding switching means arranged for cooperation with said first dividing and encoding switching means, dividend and divisor input means comprising means for energizing the respective switching means in response to dividend and divisor input signals respectively, first and second output circuit means connected respectively to said first and second dividing and encoding switching means for producing an encoded quotient representative signal and an encoded remainder representative signal at said first and second output circuit means, amount left-in-a-line measuring means and a word space counter connected to said input means, a recording device including a record medium, means for advancing the record medium through the recording device in a given direction, a plurality of recording means in said recording device and arranged in a code channel relationship, means for connecting said recording means to said first and second output circuit means and to energize said recording means for recording said encoded quotient representative signals and said encoded remainder representative signals on said record medium in said code channel relationship in response to said first and second output signals of said dividing and encoding apparatus, means responsive to said word space counter and amount-left-in-a-line measuring means for preventing the recording of a word space code on said record medium as the last encoded text information for any line of text, a carriage and main reader means, said plurality of recording means comprising text and carriage return code encoding means for encoding text information and for encoding a carriage return code at the end of a line of encoded text information, normally open switch means connected to said record medium advancing means and responsive to the conclusion of a recording by said recording means for advancing a length of record medium through said recording means, said length of record medium being sufficient for the entering of said carriage return code into said main reader means, said main reader means comprising output means, sensing means for sensing said record medium and connected to said output means, means for step feeding the record medium through said main reader means past said sensing means, said step feeding means comprising feed circuit means and read circuit means, a record medium loop normally located upstream of said sensing means, loop responsive switching means operatively connected to said feed circuit means and to said read circuit means for controlling said feed circuit means and said read circuit means and for thus controlling the operation of said main reader means.
- 23. The apparatus according to claim 22, further comprising a reproducing machine including input means, communication links connected between said reproducing machine input means and said main reader output means, said communication links comprising feedback means connected to said feed circuit means and to said read circuit means whereby said read circuit means is also controlled in response to a reproducing timing sequence and whereby said feed circuit means is initiated by a carriage return code but dependent upon the completion of a reproducing sequence.
- 24. A dividing and encoding apparatus for encoding justifying information in a proportional spacing justifying composing machine, comprising:
- first dividing and encoding switching means;
- second dividing and encoding switching means arranged for cooperation with said first dividing and encoding switching means;
- dividend and divisor input means comprising means for energizing the respective switching means in response to dividend and divisor input signals respectively;
- first and second output circuit means connected respectively to said first and second dividing and encoding switching means for producing an encoded quotient representative signal and an encoded remainder representative signal at said first and second output circuit means;
- amount left-in-a-line measuring means and a word space counter connected to said input means;
- a recording device including a record medium;
- means for advancing the record medium through the recording device in a given direction;
- a plurality of recording means in said recording device and arranged in a code channel relationship, means for connecting said recording means to said first and second output circuit means and to energize said recording means for recording said encoded quotient representative signals and said encoded remainder representative signals on said record medium in said code channel relationship in response to said first and second output signals of said dividing and encoding apparatus;
- means responsive to said word space counter and amount-left-in-a-line measuring means for preventing the recording of a word space code on said record medium as the last encoded text information for any line of text; backspace reader means; means for moving said record medium through the backspace reader means in a direction opposite said given direction, means for causing incremental movement of a print point of said composing machine in response to the output of said backspace reader means; and
- means responsive to the output of said backspace reader means for subtracting each word space encoded on said record medium and sensed by said backspace reader means from the count of said word space counter and adding said word space to said amount-left-in-a-line measuring means.
