Claims
- 1. In a key cutting machine including a key follower having a linear key follower surface for engaging and tracing the contour of a defined length bit notch pattern formed in a blade of a master key where the bit notch pattern is formed by a plurality of notch segments each having a defined length and a defined elevation and a key cutter coupled to the key follower to reproduce the traced bit notch pattern of the master key in a blade of a key blank, a code selectable key duplicating system for forming a simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern of a selected master key where the simulated bit notch pattern is defined by a coded sequence consisting of n code data fields where the position of each code data field within the coded sequence designates the position of each notch segment along the length of the master key bit notch pattern and where the data in each code data field designates the elevation of each master key notch, the code selectable key duplicating system comprising:
- a. a notch pattern simulator divided into a selectable series of n adjacent notch segments where each notch segment includes a notch length compatible with the length of the corresponding master key notch segment and a notch surface having an elevation configured to equal the elevation designated by the data in each code data field, the surfaces of the selected notch segments forming a surface contour creating a simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern designated by the coded sequence, wherein the selectable series of n adjacent notch segments is defined by a series of n notch elevation selector wheels rotatable about a common axis and wherein each notch elevation selector wheel includes a series of circumferentially spaced apart notch segments each having a first linear notch surface extending generally radially outward from the common axis and oriented parallel to a notch segment radial centerline, offset by a specified distance from the radial centerline wherein the offset distance is determined by the content of the corresponding code data field, and alignable to parallel the linear key follower surface by selective rotation of each notch elevation selector wheel about the common axis for independently adjusting the elevation of the notch surface of each notch segment in accordance with the corresponding code data field; and
- b. an alignment fixture for positioning the notch pattern simulator relative to the key follower such that the key follower engages and traces the simulated bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the simulated bit notch pattern in the blade of the key blank to produce a cut key blank which functions as a substitute for the selected master key.
- 2. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 wherein each notch segment of the notch pattern simulator includes a second linear notch surface oriented parallel to the first linear notch surface, positioned on the opposite side of the radial centerline, and offset by a specified distance from the radial centerline, wherein the second notch surface offset distance is determined by the content of the corresponding code data field.
- 3. The code selectable duplicating system of claims 1 or 2 wherein each notch segment of the notch position simulator includes first and second bevelled edge surfaces.
- 4. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 wherein the notch pattern simulator includes five notch elevation selection wheels.
- 5. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 wherein the notch pattern simulator includes six notch elevation selector wheels.
- 6. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 further including:
- a. a base defining a lateral axis and a longitudinal axis;
- b. a first cutter head for positioning the key follower at a first elevation to engage the simulated bit notch pattern and for positioning the key cutter at a second elevation to engage a first edge surface of the key blank blade;
- c. a first linear displacement mechanism coupled to the base and to the first cutter head for simultaneously laterally displacing the key follower relative to the simulated bit notch pattern of the notch pattern simulator and the key cutter relative to the blade of the key blank to enable the first cutter head to laterally follow and duplicate the simulated bit notch pattern onto the key blank blade; and
- d. a second linear displacement mechanism coupled to the base and to the alignment fixture for longitudinally displacing the key follower relative to the simulated bit notch pattern along the longitudinal axis at the first elevation and for longitudinally displacing the key cutter relative to the key blank blade along the longitudinal axis at the second elevation to reproduce the simulated bit notch pattern on the first edge of the key blank blade.
- 7. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 6 wherein each notch segment of the notch pattern simulator includes a second linear notch surface oriented parallel to the first linear notch surface, positioned on the opposite side of the radial centerline, and offset by a specified distance from the radial centerline, wherein the second notch surface offset distance is determined by the content of the corresponding code data field.
- 8. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 7 wherein the key follower engages the first simulated bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the first simulated bit notch pattern on the first edge of the key blank blade.
- 9. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 8 further including
- a. a second cutter head including a second key follower positioned at the first elevation to engage the second simulated bit notch pattern and a spaced apart second key cutter positioned at the second elevation to engage a second edge surface of the key blank blade; and
- b. wherein the first linear displacement mechanism is coupled to the second cutter head for simultaneously laterally displacing the second key follower relative to the second simulated bit notch pattern and the second key cutter toward and away from the second edge surface of the key blank blade to enable the second cutter head to laterally follow and duplicate the second simulated bit notch pattern on a second edge surface of the key blank blade.
- 10. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 9 wherein the second cutter head duplicates the second simulated bit notch pattern on the second edge surface of the key blank blade.
- 11. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 9 wherein the first linear displacement mechanism includes a linear bearing assembly.
- 12. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 11 wherein the linear bearing assembly includes:
- a. a first linear bearing coupled between the base and the first cutter head; and
- b. a second linear bearing coupled between the base and the second cutter head.
- 13. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 9 wherein the first and second cutter heads include first and second rotary cutting wheels.
- 14. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 13 further including a drive mechanism coupled to the first and second cutting wheels for rotating the first cutter wheel in a first direction and for rotating the second cutting wheel in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
- 15. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 14 wherein the drive mechanism includes:
- a. a first electric motor coupled to and forming a part of the first cutter head for rotating the first cutting wheel in the first direction; and
- b. a second electric motor forming a part of the second cutter head for rotating the second cutting wheel in the second direction.
- 16. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 wherein the key blank includes a longitudinal axis, the notch pattern simulator includes a longitudinal axis, and the alignment fixture includes a longitudinal indexing mechanism for longitudinally indexing the key blank relative to the simulated bit notch pattern of the notch pattern simulator.
- 17. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 1 or 16 wherein the alignment fixture is formed as a cassette readily inserted into and removed from the key cutting machine.
- 18. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 17 wherein the cassette includes upper and lower clamping surfaces displaceable between an open position for receiving the key blank between the clamping surfaces and a closed position for engaging the key blank and retaining it in a fixed lateral position.
- 19. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 6 wherein the second linear displacement mechanism includes:
- a. a cam;
- b. a cam follower having a first end coupled to engage and be displaced by the cam and a second end coupled to the alignment fixture; and
- c. a mechanism for rotating in the cam.
- 20. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 19 wherein the cam rotating mechanism includes an electric motor.
- 21. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 9 wherein the alignment fixture includes a device for laterally offsetting the second key follower to prevent engagement between the second key cutter and the key blank when the bit notch pattern of a single-sided key is being reproduced.
- 22. In a key cutting machine including a key follower for engaging and tracing the contour of a defined length bit notch pattern formed in a blade of a master key where the bit notch pattern is formed by a plurality of notch segments each having a defined length and a defined elevation and a key cutter coupled to the key follower to reproduce the traced bit notch pattern of the master key in a blade of a key blank, a code selectable key duplicating system for forming a simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern of a selected master key where the simulated bit notch pattern is defined by a coded sequence consisting of n code data fields where the position of each code data field within the coded sequence designates the position of each notch segment along the length of the master key bit notch pattern and where the data in each code data field designates the elevation of each master key notch, the code selectable key duplicating system comprising:
- a. a notch pattern simulator divided into a selectable series of n adjacent notch segments where each notch segment includes a notch length compatible with the length of the corresponding master key notch segment and a notch surface having an elevation configured to equal the elevation designated by the data in each code data field, the surfaces of the selected notch segments forming a surface contour creating a simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern designated by the coded sequence;
- b. an alignment fixture for positioning the notch pattern simulator relative to the key follower such that the key follower engages and traces the simulated bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the simulated bit notch pattern in the blade of the key blank to produce a cut key blank which functions as a substituted for the selected master key; and
- c. the key follower of the key cutting machine including an upper face segment with a bevelled tracing surface and a lower face segment with a key tracing surface.
- 23. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 22 wherein the bevelled tracing surface of the key follower upper face segment includes a first face surface and a second face surface.
- 24. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 23 wherein the upper face segment is located at a first elevation for tracing the simulated bit notch pattern and the lower face segment is located at a second elevation for tracing the bit notch pattern of a master key.
- 25. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 24 wherein the alignment fixture positions the notch pattern simulator at the first elevation to allow the bevelled tracing surface of the key follower upper face segment to engage the simulated bit notch pattern.
- 26. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 25 wherein the alignment fixture receives and positions the master key at the second elevation such that the key tracing surface of the key follower lower face segment engages and traces the master key bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the master key bit notch pattern in the blade of the key blank to produce a cut key blank which functions as a substitute for the master key.
- 27. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 22 wherein the selectable series of n adjacent notch segments is defined by a series of n notch elevation selector wheels rotatable about a common axis.
- 28. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 27 wherein each notch elevation selector wheel includes a series of circumferentially spaced apart notch segments.
- 29. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 28 wherein each notch segment includes a linear notch surface extending generally radially outward from the common axis and alignable to parallel the bevelled tracing surface of the key follower upper face segment by selective rotation of each notch elevation selector wheel about the common axis to thereby independently adjust the elevation of the notch surface of each notch segment in accordance with the corresponding coded sequence data field.
- 30. In a key cutting machine including a key follower for engaging and tracing the contour of a defined length bit notch pattern formed in a blade of a master key where the bit notch pattern is formed by a plurality of notch segments each having a defined length and a defined elevation and a key cutter coupled to the key follower to reproduce the traced bit notch pattern of the master key in a blade of a key blank, a code selectable key duplicating system for forming a simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern of a selected master key where the simulated bit notch pattern is defined by a coded sequence consisting of n code data fields where the position of each code data field within the coded sequence designates the position of each notch segment along the length of the master key bit notch pattern and where the data in each code data field designates the elevation of each master key notch, the code selectable key duplicating system comprising:
- a. a notch pattern simulator divided into a selectable series of n adjacent notch segments where each notch segment includes a notch length compatible with the length of the corresponding master key notch segment and a notch surface having an elevation configured to equal the elevation designated by the data in each code data field, the surfaces of the selected notch segments forming a surface contour creating a first simulated bit notch pattern corresponding to the bit notch pattern designated by the coded sequence, wherein the selectable series of n adjacent notch segments is defined by a series of n notch elevation selector plates having a vertical axis and a first vertically extending edge surface divided as a function of relative elevation into n stepped edge segments each having a different lateral position relative to the vertical axis to define a first set of n adjacent notch segments creating the first simulated bit notch pattern; and
- b. an alignment fixture for positioning the notch pattern simulator relative to the key follower such that the key follower engages and traces the simulated bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the simulated bit notch pattern in the blade of the key blank to produce a cut key blank which functions as a substitute for the selected master key.
- 31. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 30 further including a vertical displacement system for independently controlling the vertical position of each notch elevation selector plate in response to the n code data fields of the coded sequence.
- 32. The code selectable duplicating system of claims 30 or 31 wherein each notch elevation selector plate includes a second vertically extending edge surface divided as a function of relative elevation into n stepped edge segments each having a different lateral position relative to the vertical axis to define a second set of n adjacent notch segments.
- 33. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 32 wherein the first and second vertically extending edge surfaces of the n notch elevation selector plates enable the key cutting machine to duplicate a key having first and second but notch patterns.
- 34. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 30 further including:
- a. a base defining a lateral axis and a longitudinal axis;
- b. a first cutter head for positioning the key follower at a first elevation to engage the simulated bit notch pattern and for positioning the key cutter at a second elevation to engage the key blank blade;
- c. a first linear displacement mechanism coupled to the base and to the first cutter head for simultaneously laterally displacing the key follower relative to the simulated bit notch pattern of the notch pattern simulator and the key cutter relative to the blade of the key blank to enable the first cutter head to laterally follow and duplicate the simulated bit notch pattern onto a first edge of the key blank blade; and
- d. a second linear displacement mechanism coupled to the base and to the alignment fixture for longitudinally displacing the key follower relative to the simulated bit notch pattern along the longitudinal axis at the first elevation and for longitudinally displacing the key cutter relative to the key blank blade along the longitudinal axis at the second elevation to reproduce the simulated bit notch pattern on the first edge of the key blank blade.
- 35. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 34 wherein each notch elevation selector plate includes a second vertically extending edge surface divided as a function of relative elevation into n stepped edge segments each having a different lateral position relative to the vertical axis to define a second set of n adjacent notch segments creating a second simulated bit notch pattern.
- 36. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 34 wherein the key follower engages the first simulated bit notch pattern and the key cutter reproduces the first simulated bit notch pattern on the first edge of the key blank blade.
- 37. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 36 further including:
- a. a second cutter head including a second key follower positioning at the first elevation to engage the second simulated bit notch pattern and a spaced apart second key cutter positioned at the second elevation to engage a second edge of the key blank blade; and
- b. wherein the first linear displacement mechanism is coupled to the second cutter head for simultaneously laterally displacing the second key follower relative to the second simulated bit notch pattern and the second key cutter toward and away from the second edge surface of the key blank blade to enable the second cutter head to laterally follow and duplicate the second simulated bit notch pattern on the second edge of the key blank blade.
- 38. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 37 wherein the second cutter head duplicates the second simulated bit notch pattern on the second edge of the key blank blade.
- 39. The code selectable duplicating system of claim 38 wherein the first and second key cutters include first and second rotary cutting wheels.
