Claims
- 1. In a harvesting machine having a crop flow passage, an improved knife bed assembly for use in cutting crop materials as they move through the passage, said knife bed assembly comprising:
a frame; a series of knife blades each swingable on the frame between extended and retracted positions; a corresponding series of blade actuators each swingable on the frame between actuated and unactuated positions, each actuator being operable to swing the corresponding blade to its extended position as the actuator is swung to its actuated position; a corresponding series of springs each operably coupled between the frame and a corresponding actuator for yieldably biasing the actuator toward its actuated position; a plurality of holes in the frame, each corresponding to a condition in which a different combination of the blades, or no combination of the blades, is in the retracted position, said actuators being provided with apertures so disposed that different combinations of the actuators have their apertures in registration with corresponding, different holes in the frame when the actuators are in the unactuated position; and a locking rod insertable into any selected one of said holes in the frame and the corresponding apertures of the actuators when the actuators are in the unactuated position to lock a corresponding combination of the blades in the retracted position.
- 2. In a harvesting machine as claimed in claim 1,
each of said actuators having a pair of opposite end portions on opposite sides of the axis of swinging movement of the actuator, each of said springs comprising a tension spring connected to one end portion of the corresponding actuator, the apertures of the actuators being disposed in the other end portions of the actuators.
- 3. In a harvesting machine as claimed in claim 2,
further including a common cross member to which all said tension springs are connected, said cross member being shiftable between a pair of alternative positions applying and releasing tension on the tension springs, said tension springs being operable when the member is in the tension applying position to yieldably bias the actuators toward the actuated position, and being operable when the member is in the tension releasing position to allow the actuators to return to the unactuated position.
- 4. In a harvesting machine as claimed in claim 3,
further including a hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly operably coupled with said member for shifting the member between said tension applying and tension releasing positions, said frame having a stop for precluding shifting of the member by the piston and cylinder assembly beyond said tension applying position, said frame being swingable between a raised operating position and a lowered access position by said piston and cylinder assembly when the stop precludes further shifting of the member.
