Claims
- 1. A tufting machine of the type having needles for inserting yarns through a backing material and wherein loopers catch and hold the loops of yarns as they are inserted through backing material by the needles, and a knife assembly supporting means is reciprocated for moving knives for cutting action with respect to the loops caught by the loopers; wherein the improvement comprises: a knife assembly between said knives and said knife assembly supporting means, said knife assembly including a knife bar carried by said supporting means, said knife bar having a sidewise opening recess, knife holder means carried by said knife bar, said knife holder means having tongue means protruding into said recess, said tongue means having increments spaced from each other and received at spaced locations in said recess for preventing relative rotational movement of said knife holder means in such recess, said knife holder means being moveable into and out of engagement with said supporting means, and detent means for locking said tongue means in place, said knife holder means having a plurality of equally spaced parallel slots each being disposed at an angle to the plane of said loopers and at an angle to the horizontal, whereby said knife holder holds said knives with their cutting edges against and cooperating with said loopers.
- 2. The tufting machine defined in claim 1 wherein said knife holder means includes a bracket connected to said tongue means and received against a surface of said supporting means, when said tongue means is received in said recess, and a knife holder carried by said bracket, said knife holder having said spaced slots, and knife holder having additional spaced slots below the first mentioned spaced slots and through which other increments of said blades pass.
- 3. The knife holder defined in claim 2 including additional detent means for clamping said blades in said knife holder means.
- 4. The tufting machine defined in claim 1 wherein said knife holder means including a hollow tubular knife holder, having an upper plate and a lower plate and wherein said slots are provided in both said upper plate and said lower plate.
- 5. The tufting machine defined in claim 4 including C-shaped knife clamps disposed outwardly of said knife holder and engaging said knives above and below said knife holder.
- 6. The tufting machine defined in claim 5 including set screws passing through the central portions of said C-shaped clamps and threadedly received in said knife holder, said set screws being tightenable for urging the knives against said knife holder.
- 7. The tufting machine defined in claim 1 wherein said recess is a channel-shaped outwardly opening slot along said supporting means and wherein said tongue means is a flange received within and conforming generally to the shape of the slot forming said recess.
- 8. The tufting machine defined in claim 1 wherein said supporting means defines a flat upright surface, said recess is an outwardly opening slot opening through said surface and said knife holder means includes a bracket having a flat body portion flush against said flat surface of said supporting means and said tongue means includes a rectangular flange received within said outwardly opening slot.
- 9. The tufting machine defined in claim 8 wherein said holder means includes a hollow tubular rectangular knife holder for defining a back plate, an upper plate, a lower plate and a front plate, said knife holder being secured by its back plate to said bracket, said slots being provided in said upper plate and in said lower plate, the slots of said upper plate being offset from the slots of the lower plate, each of said knives passing through a slot in said upper plate and a slot in said lower plate.
