The invention relates to a knife sharpening device with a holder according to the preamble of claim 1.
DE 102018112563 A1 discloses a knife sharpening device with a plate that has two sharpening rods pivotally mounted on the plate. The sharpening rods are arranged in a V-shape relative to each other.
Many knife sharpening devices known from prior art cannot be used to sharpen circular knives. Therefore, the invention aims to provide a knife sharpening device capable of sharpening and/or honing and/or polishing circular knives.
The problem is solved using a knife sharpening device that includes a holder.
The holder has a slot to accommodate the blade of a circular knife.
At least one sharpening rod is pivotally mounted on the holder against the force of a spring.
At least one first sharpening insert is arranged on the sharpening rod.
The slot extends eccentrically into the holder relative to its longitudinal axis.
At least one additional sharpening insert is positioned on an outer side of the holder.
Further details on the first and additional sharpening inserts are discussed below.
A circular knife has at least one rotating cutting edge. For example, but not exclusively, the circular knife can be part of a circular saw. It is understood that the circular knife can also be part of a bread slicer or another machine.
The rotating cutting edge can be guided straight through a material. The rotating cutting edge can also be guided in an arc over the material to create a curved cut.
The circular knife can be made of at least two different materials. The material can be stainless steel and/or chrome steel. The circular knife can also be made of tool steel.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, the circular knife can also be referred to as a rotary blade.
The circular knife can be used to cut various materials.
It is also understood that other types of blades can be sharpened and/or honed and/or polished instead of a circular knife.
Generally, it is assumed in the following that a circular knife is used.
The holder refers to a component of the knife sharpening device. At least one sharpening rod is mounted on the holder.
The holder has a slot to accommodate the blade of the circular knife.
A spring is mounted on the holder, which acts on the sharpening rod.
The slot extends eccentrically into the holder relative to its longitudinal axis.
At least one additional sharpening insert is positioned on an outer side of the holder.
Preferably, but not exclusively, the holder includes a housing that comprises at least two housing halves.
As an example, but not exclusively, the following will refer to the holder as a housing.
The longitudinal axis of the holder corresponds to the longitudinal axis of the housing.
The housing will be discussed in more detail below.
The sharpening rod serves as a base for arranging at least one sharpening insert.
The sharpening rod can be a solid object.
The sharpening rod can be a narrow and/or long object. The sharpening rod can have a round or square cross-section. However, it is understood that the sharpening rod may also have another geometric shape.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, it is assumed that the sharpening rod has the shape of a rod.
In a rest position, the sharpening rod with the attached sharpening insert is positioned in a predetermined position relative to the longitudinal axis of the housing of the knife sharpening device.
The sharpening rod can be positioned at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the housing in the rest position.
At one end, the sharpening rod is pivotally mounted on the housing of the knife sharpening device.
At its other end, the sharpening rod is movably guided transversely to the longitudinal axis of the housing.
The guiding of the sharpening rod is preferably, but not exclusively, achieved through an oblong hole.
The oblong hole is an elongated bore or groove. The narrow sides of the oblong hole are closed by semicircles. The diameters of the semicircles correspond to the width of the oblong hole. The long sides of the oblong hole run parallel to each other. The oblong hole may have a straight or curved shape.
In the oblong hole, the sharpening rod is reversibly pivoted from a rest position to a working position.
In the rest position, at least one spring pushes the sharpening rod along with the attached sharpening insert in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the housing into a slot of the housing. For simplicity, one spring will be referred to hereafter. It is understood, however, that multiple springs can be provided.
The spring will be discussed in more detail below.
In the rest position, the sharpening rod is aligned and positioned relative to the blade of the circular knife.
When the blade of the circular knife is inserted into an opening of the slot in the housing of the knife sharpening device, the sharpening rod with the attached sharpening insert is pivoted into a working position against the force of the spring.
The distance that the sharpening rod travels while pivoting into and out of the slot in the housing is determined by the oblong hole.
On its way from the rest position to the working position, the sharpening rod with the attached sharpening insert is pivoted relative to the longitudinal axis of the housing from the slot towards an outer side of the housing.
The guiding of the sharpening rod can also be achieved through another technical method besides the oblong hole. For illustrative purposes, however, the description will refer to an oblong hole.
The sharpening insert is used for grinding and/or scraping and/or honing and/or polishing the blade of the circular knife.
During grinding, excess material, e.g., in the form of chips, is removed from the blade, and a fine burr on the blade is realigned.
During honing, a burr that formed during grinding is removed from the blade.
Polishing the blade of the circular knife refers to the light removal of material from the blade. During polishing, the surface of the blade is further smoothed.
According to the invention, at least one first sharpening insert and at least one additional sharpening insert are arranged.
The first sharpening insert is arranged on the sharpening rod. The additional sharpening insert is positioned on the outer side of the housing (holder).
In the following, “sharpening insert” will be used generally. The subsequent description refers to both the first and the additional sharpening insert.
Preferably, but not exclusively, the sharpening insert is a round or elongated and/or rod-shaped body.
The sharpening insert may have a round cross-section. The cross-section of the sharpening insert may also be square. It is understood that the sharpening insert may also have another geometric shape.
The sharpening insert is arranged for honing and/or smoothing and/or sharpening the blade of the circular knife.
The sharpening insert used for honing is also referred to as a honing surface. The honing surface will be discussed in more detail below.
Preferably, but not exclusively, the sharpening insert may be a synthetic sharpening stone.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, it is assumed that the sharpening insert is a hard metal plate.
The hard metal plate is made from at least one type of hard metal. For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, the hard metal plate may also include metal matrix composite materials. In metal matrix composite materials, hard particles, present as small particles, are held together by a metallic matrix.
It is understood that the sharpening insert may also contain other abrasive materials. The quality and/or effectiveness of the sharpening insert is determined by the amount of abrasive materials in the sharpening insert's material. Preferably, but not exclusively, the sharpening insert includes one or more abrasive materials from corundum and/or ceramic and/or diamond and/or silicon hard metal.
The housing of the holder has at least one bearing on which the sharpening rod is pivotally mounted.
The housing also includes the oblong hole in which one end of the sharpening rod is movably guided.
Preferably, but not exclusively, at least one spring is arranged inside the housing of the knife sharpening device. The spring pushes the sharpening rod in its rest position towards the longitudinal axis of the housing into the slot of the housing.
The housing may comprise at least two housing halves. The two housing halves are connected by at least two screws. It is understood that the housing halves may also be connected by at least one peg. The peg of one housing half engages in a hole arranged in the opposite housing half. Additionally, the housing halves may be connected in another technical way.
The two housing halves can be sealed against each other with a surrounding gasket.
When assembled, the housing halves enclose at least part of the interior of the housing.
With their outer sides, the housing halves enclose at least part of the interior of the housing.
The housing may have a wedge-shaped form when the housing halves are assembled. Instead of being screwed together, the housing halves can also be connected in another way. It is understood that the housing can also have another geometric shape.
The housing has a slot. The slot preferably, but not exclusively, extends along the longitudinal axis of the housing through both housing halves.
The slot has an approximately V-shaped profile.
Transversely to the longitudinal axis of the housing, the slot preferably, but not exclusively, extends eccentrically into the housing of the knife sharpening device.
One side of the slot has a curved profile relative to the longitudinal axis of the housing through the housing halves.
Another side of the slot may have a straight profile relative to the longitudinal axis of the housing.
It is understood, however, that both sides of the slot can have a straight profile. Alternatively, both sides of the slot can have a curved profile.
At least one side of the slot has at least one shoulder on the outer side of one of the housing halves.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, the shoulder is arranged in the area where the side of the slot has a straight profile.
The straight and/or curved side of the slot can be a continuous surface. Alternatively, the straight and/or curved side of the slot may also have interruptions.
The straight and/or curved side of the slot may also have profiling and/or interruptions. The profiling preferably, but not exclusively, refers to rounding and/or recessing in the area of the side of the slot.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, it is assumed that the shoulder is arranged in the area where the side of the slot has a straight profile.
The shoulder may also extend approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the housing along the opening of the slot for the insertion of the circular knife at a front end of at least one housing half.
The shoulder extends beyond the outer side and/or the front end of at least one housing half, which at least partially encloses the housing.
When the blade of the circular knife enters the slot of the housing, the back of the blade rests against the side of the slot with the straight profile. The blade of the circular knife refers to the cutting surface of the circular knife. The blade (cutting surface) of the circular knife rests with its back in continuation of the side of the slot with the straight profile against the shoulder that extends the straight side of the slot.
The cutting surface of the circular knife consists of converging, preferably ground surfaces that meet at the cutting edge of the circular knife.
The ground surfaces of the circular knife are referred to as bevels. The cutting edge is formed by the meeting of two bevels (double-edged). The cutting edge can also consist of one bevel and the back of the blade (single-edged).
It is understood that the shoulder positioned on the housing also serves to protect the user's fingers from injury by the circular knife.
The two sides of the slot preferably, but not exclusively, merge into a lower end of the slot along the longitudinal axis of the housing. For simplicity, the lower end of the slot will be referred to in the following.
The housing of the knife sharpening device can be made of metal or plastic. It is understood that the housing can also be made of another material.
The material from which the housing is made has a hardness that ensures the housing is not damaged when the blade of the circular knife is inserted into the opening of the slot.
The honing surface is used for sharpening and/or honing and/or polishing (smoothing) the blade of the circular knife along its back.
At least one honing surface is arranged on at least one edge of the housing half. The edge of the housing half preferably, but not exclusively, extends at right angles to the outer side of the housing half.
The honing surface is inserted into a recess in the edge of the housing half.
The surface of the honing surface may protrude from the surface of the edge of the housing half.
In the case of an eccentrically arranged slot in the housing, the recess for accommodating the honing surface is arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing on the edge of the housing half furthest from the slot.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, it is assumed that the honing surface consists of hard metal plates.
To be used as a honing surface, the hard metal plate can be made of at least one type of hard metal. For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, the hard metal plate can also include metal matrix composite materials. In metal matrix composite materials, hard particles, which exist as small particles, are held together by a metallic matrix.
The honing surface may rest against a spring inside the housing.
Preferably, but not exclusively, at least one spring is a metallic, technical component.
The spring is elastically deformable. The spring can be a coil spring. It is understood that the spring may also be a flexible body made of plastic or rubber. The flexible body can be compressed by a force acting on the body. When the force is removed, the flexible body returns to its original shape. However, it is also understood that instead of plastic or rubber, another material may be used for the body.
The elastic deformation of the spring can involve bending or torsion. In this case, a bending moment leads to bending stress, while the torsional moment leads to torsional stress.
Preferably, but not exclusively, the spring may be a bending spring or a torsion spring.
Alternatively, another type of spring can be used.
For illustrative purposes, but not exclusively, it is assumed that the spring is a rod spring.
