Claims
- 1. A method of providing an image on a thermal media having a image-receiving layer and a protective overlayer, comprising the steps of:
a) providing an image on said image-receiving layer using a thermal head; and b) providing machine-readable indicia on said protective overlayer by varying the temperature of said thermal head used to apply said protective overlayer.
- 2. The method of claim 1 whereas said machine-readable indicia is transparent so as to allow viewing of said image in said image-receiving layer.
- 3. The method of claim 1 whereas the temperature of said thermal head is varied by controlling the current supplied to said thermal head.
- 4. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia is a 1-D code.
- 5. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia is a 2-D code.
- 6. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia is Braille.
- 7. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia is text.
- 8. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia is an image.
- 9. The method of claim 1 whereas said media has an adhesive layer for securing to an item.
- 10. The method of claim 1 whereas said indicia comprises information regarding an item onto which said media is applied.
- 11. The method of claim 1 whereas said media is a label.
- 12. The method of claim 11 whereas said label has an adhesive layer for securing to an item.
- 13. The method of claim 1 whereas said machine-readable indicia is represented by varying protective overlayer thickness.
- 14. The method of claim 1 whereas said machine-readable indicia is located in any position on the thermal media.
- 15. A method of providing an image on a media having a image-receiving layer and a protective overlayer, comprising the steps of:
a) providing an image on said image-receiving layer; and b) providing machine-readable indicia on said protective overlayer by varying the temperature of a thermal head used to apply said protective overlayer.
- 16. A method of providing an image on a thermal media having a image-receiving layer and a protective overlayer, comprising the steps of:
a) providing an image on said image-receiving layer using a thermal head; and b) providing indicia on said protective overlayer by varying the temperature of said thermal head used to apply said protective overlayer.
- 17. The method of claim 16 whereas said thermal media is a package.
- 18. A method of providing an image on a thermal media having a image-receiving layer and an protective overlayer, comprising the steps of:
a) providing machine-readable indicia on said protective overlayer by varying the temperature of said thermal head used to apply said protective overlayer.
- 19. The method of claim 18 whereas the temperature of said thermal head is varied by controlling the current supplied to said thermal head.
- 20. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia is a 1-D code.
- 21. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia is a 2-D code.
- 22. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia is Braille.
- 23. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia is text.
- 24. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia is an image.
- 25. The method of claim 18 whereas said media has an adhesive layer for securing to an item.
- 26. The method of claim 18 whereas said indicia comprises information regarding an item on which said media is applied.
- 27. The method of claim 18 whereas said media is a label.
- 28. The method of claim 27 whereas said label has an adhesive layer for securing to an item.
- 29. A method of providing an image on a thermal media having an protective overlayer, comprising the steps of:
a) providing machine-readable indicia on said protective overlayer by varying the temperature of said thermal head used to apply said protective overlayer.
- 30. A method of providing a machine-readable indicia on a media having a protective overlayer comprising the steps of:
a) providing a 1st machine-readable indicia in an image layer on said media; and b) providing a 2nd machine-readable indicia in a protective overlayer that is identical in content to, and in register with said 1st machine-readable indicia in said image layer.
- 31. A method of providing indicia on a media having a protective overlayer comprising the steps of:
a) providing a 1st machine-readable indicia in an image layer on said media; and b) providing a 2nd machine-readable indicia in a protective overlayer that is identical in content to, and in register with said 1st machine-readable indicia in said image layer.
- 32. A media comprising:
a) an image-receiving layer on which an image may be formed; and b) a protective overlayer provided over said image-receiving layer, said protective overlayer having machine-readable indicia formed thereon.
- 33. A media comprising:
a) an image-receiving layer on which an image may be formed using a thermal head; and b) a protective overlayer provided over said image-receiving layer, said protective overlayer having machine-readable indicia formed thereon.
- 34. The media of claim 33 wherein said indicia being transparent so as to allow viewing of an image provided on said image-receiving layer.
- 35. The media of claim 33 wherein said protective overlayer comprises an IR absorbing dye.
- 36. The media of claim 33 further comprising an adhesive layer for securing to an item.
- 37. A media comprising:
a) a 1st machine-readable indicia in an image layer on said media; and b) a 2nd machine-readable indicia in a protective overlayer that is identical in content to, and in register with said 1st machine-readable indicia in said image layer.
- 38. A label comprising:
a) a image-receiving layer on which an image may be formed using a thermal head; and b) a protective overlayer provided over said image-receiving layer, said protective overlayer having machine-readable indicia formed thereon.
- 39. A computer program that when programmed in a computer causes the computer to provide the steps of:
a) forming a 1st machine-readable indicia in an image layer on a media; and b) forming a 2nd machine-readable indicia in a protective overlayer that is identical in content to, and in register with said 1st machine-readable indicia.
- 40. A method of reading a media having indicia formed in a protective overlayer, said indicia having a physical topography that represents a machine-readable code comprising the steps of:
a) reading the physical topography of said indicia by a machine so as to obtain information encoded therein; and b) interpreting said encoded information so as to obtain said information.
