Claims
- 1. A machine for forming tape sections of a predetermined length from an endless tape strip, said machine comprising
- a tape feed mechanism adapted to contact said endless strip, said tape feed mechanism extending said endless strip a predetermined length in response to operation thereof,
- a cutter assembly for cutting a tape section of said predetermined length from said endless strip after extension thereof,
- an ejector nozzle positioned in operational relation with said cutter assembly, said ejector nozzle being connectable with an air source, air discharged from said ejector nozzle being operable to blow each tape section away from said cutter assembly to a collection station after said tape section has been cut from said endless strip, and
- pneumatic motor means connected with said machine, said pneumatic motor means being operable during a work stroke to power at least one component of said machine, the exhaust air of said pneumatic motor means providing the air source for said ejector nozzle.
- 2. A machine as set forth in claim 1, said machine further comprising
- a printer head reciprocable into and out of printing contact with said tape section.
- 3. A machine as set forth in claim 1, said machine further comprising
- a platen on which said tape section of predetermined length is positioned prior to being cut from said endless strip, and
- a printer head connected with said machine, one of said printer head and said platen being connected with said pneumatic motor means for printing that tape section on said platen, said printer head also cooperating with said platen to hold down said tape section while said cutter assembly cuts said tape section from said endless strip, the air discharged from said ejector nozzle blowing said tape section off said platen after said newly cut tape section is released by said printer head.
- 4. A machine for forming tape sections of a predetermined length from an endless tape strip, said machine comprising
- a tape feed mechanism adapted to contact said endless strip, said tape feed mechanism extending said endless strip in response to operation thereof,
- a brake device movable into and out of braking relation with said tape feed mechanism,
- connector structure connecting said brake device and said tape feed mechanism for causing said brake device to move into braking relation with said tape feed mechanism when said mechanism has extended said endless tape strip a predetermined length, said tape section length being established and controlled to said predetermined length by stopping operation of said tape feed mechanism through use of said brake device, thereby insuring generally accurate tape section length time after time,
- a cutter assembly operable to cut said tape section of predetermined length from said endless tape strip,
- an ejector nozzle positioned in operational relation with said cutter assembly, said ejector nozzle being connectable with an air source, air discharged from said ejector nozzle being operable to blow each tape section away from said cutter assembly to a collection station after said tape section has been cut from said endless strip, and
- pneumatic motor means connected with said machine, said pneumatic motor means being operable during a work stroke to power at least one component of said machine, the exhaust air of said pneumatic motor means providing the air source for said ejector nozzle.
- 5. A machine as set forth in claim 4, said brake device and said tape feed mechanism comprising
- a brake shoe reciprocable into and out of braking relation with a drive roll, the reciprocable stroke length of said brake shoe relative to said drive roll controlling the tape section length extended by said drive roll, said brake shoe being movable into braking relation with said drive roll when said drive roll has extended said endless tape strip said predetermined length for insuring generally accurate tape section length time after time.
- 6. A machine as set forth in claim 5, said machine further comprising
- brake shoe locator structure for varying the reciprocable stroke length of said brake shoe relative to said drive roll, said locator structure permitting an increase or decrease in the length of said tape section as extended in response to an increase or decrease of said brake shoe stroke length relative to said drive roll.
- 7. A machine as set forth in claim 6, said machine further comprising
- a rack cooperable with a pinion for rotating said drive roll, said pinion being connected with said drive roll,
- and
- a brake drum connected with said drive roll, said brake shoe being mounted on said rack, the work stroke of said rack simultaneously rotating said drive roll and causing said brake shoe to move into braking relation with said brake drum for establishing and controlling the predetermined length of said tape section.
- 8. A machine as set forth in claim 7, said machine further comprising
- a one-way clutch connected between said pinion and said drive roll, said one-way clutch permitting said rack to rotate said drive roll on the work stroke of said rack, but preventing said rack from rotating said drive roll on the return stroke of said rack.
- 9. A machine as set forth in claim 4, said machine further comprising
- a printer head connected with said machine, said printer head and said tape section of predetermined length being reciprocable into and out of printing contact with one another after extension of said tape section by said tape feed mechanism,
- and
- motor means connected with said machine for causing reciprocation of one of said printer head and said tape section of predetermined length.
- 10. A machine as set forth in claim 4, said machine further comprising
- a platen on which said tape section of predetermined length is positioned prior to being cut from said endless strip, and
- a printer head connected with said machine, one of said printer head and said platen being connected with said pneumatic motor means for printing that strip length on said platen, said printer head also cooperating with said platen to hold down said tape section while said cutter assembly cuts said tape section from said endless strip, the air discharged from said ejector nozzle blowing said tape section off said platen after said newly cut tape section is released by said printer head.
- 11. A machine for forming tape sections of a predetermined length from an endless tape strip, said machine comprising
- a tape feed mechanism adapted to contact said endless strip, said feed mechanism extending said endless strip a predetermined length in response to operation thereof,
- a cutter assembly for cutting a tape section of said predetermined length from said endless strip after extension thereof,
- a collection station positioned adjacent said cutter assembly, said collection station being structured to accumulate multiple tape sections cut from said endless tape strip by said cutter assembly,
- an ejector nozzle also positioned adjacent said cutter assembly, said ejector nozzle being connectable with an air source, said ejector nozzle being oriented relative to said cutter assembly so that air discharged from said ejector nozzle will convey separate tape sections into said collection station by blowing each tape section away from said cutter assembly directly into said collection station after said tape section has been cut from said endless strip, and
- pneumatic motor means connected with said machine, said pneumatic motor means being operable during a work stroke to power at least one component of said machine, the exhaust air of said pneumatic motor means providing said air source for said ejector nozzle.
- 12. A machine as set forth in claim 11, said machine comprising
- air control means connected between said air source and said ejector nozzle, said air control means being operable to discharge air from said ejector nozzle only for a limited time immediately after cut off of each tape section.
- 13. A machine as set forth in claim 11 or claim 12, said machine comprising
- a guide located between said cutter assembly and said collection station, said guide providing vertical support for said tape sections as said tape sections are blown away from said cutter assembly into said collection station after cut-off from said endless tape strip.
- 14. A machine as set forth in claim 11, said air source being provided by one of a work stroke and a return stroke of said pneumatic motor means.
- 15. A machine as set forth in claim 11, said machine further comprising
- a hold down device movable into and out of hold down contact with said tape strip after extension by said tape feed mechanism, at least one of said hold down device and said cutter assembly being operated by said pneumatic motor means.
- 16. A machine as set forth in claim 26, said machine further comprising
- a platen on which said tape section of predetermined length is positioned prior to being cut from said endless strip,
- and
- a printer head with said machine for printing that tape section on said platen, the air discharged from said ejector nozzle blowing said tape section off said platen after said newly cut tape section has been printed.
- 17. A machine as set forth in claim 16, one of said printer head and said platen being connected with said pneumatic motor means, the air discharged from said ejector nozzle blowing said tape section off said platen in response to the return stroke of said one of said printer head and said platen.
