Claims
- 1. A print head, comprising: a plurality of rotatably mounted drive wheels, each drive wheel having a central hole, the holes being aligned to define a continuous opening through the drive wheels, a plurality of different printing elements for each drive wheel, a rotatable and shiftable selector shaft movable in the axial direction and having a driving member in the opening selectably engageable with any drive wheel, the drive wheels being capable of being comprised of one set of at least two different sets of drive wheels, wherein at least one drive wheel of one of the sets differs in width from at least one drive wheel of another set, means for detenting the selector shaft in engagement with any selected drive wheel irrespective of whether the print head is comprised of the one set or of the other set, and wherein the detenting means is operable within the continuous opening.
- 2. A print head, comprising: a plurality of rotatably mounted drive wheels, each drive wheel having a central hole, the holes being aligned to define a continuous opening through the drive wheels, a plurality of different printing elements for each drive wheel, a rotatable and shiftable selector shaft movable in the axial direction and having a driving member in the opening selectably engageable with any drive wheel, the drive wheels being capable of being comprised of one set of a least two different sets of drive wheels, wherein at least one drive wheel of one of the sets differs in width from at least one drive wheel of another set, means including a flexible resilient spring finger for detenting the selector shaft in engagement with any selected drive wheel irrespective of whether the print head is comprised of the one set or of the other set, and wherein the detenting means further includes means for providing recesses cooperable with the flexible resilient spring finger within the continuous opening.
- 3. A print head, comprising: a plurality of rotatably mounted drive wheels, each drive wheel having a central hole, the holes being aligned to define a continuous opening through the drive wheels, a plurality of different printing elements for each drive wheel, wherein at least one of the drive wheels differs in width from at least one other drive wheel, a rotatable and shiftable selector shaft movable in the axial direction and having a driving member in the opening selectably engageable with any drive wheel, means for detenting the selector shaft in engagement with any selected drive wheel, and wherein the detenting means is operable within the continuous opening.
- 4. A print head, comprising: a plurality of rotatably mounted drive wheels, each drive wheel having a central hole, the holes being aligned to define a continuous opening through the wheels, a plurality of different printing elements for each drive wheel, wherein at least one of the drive wheels differs in width from at least one other drive wheel, a rotatable and shiftable selector shaft movable in the axial direction and having a driving member in the opening selectably engageable with any drive wheel, means including a flexible resilient spring finger for detenting the selector shaft in engagement with any selected drive wheel, and wherein the detenting means further includes means for providing recesses cooperable with the flexible resilient spring finger within the continuous opening.
- 5. A print head, comprising: rotatably mounted drive wheels of either a first width or of a second width wider than the first width, each drive wheel having a central hole, the holes being aligned to define a continuous opening through the drive wheels, a plurality of different printing elements for each drive wheel, a rotatable and shiftable selector shaft movable in the axial direction within the continuous opening and having a driving member in the continuous opening selectably engageable with any drive wheel, means for detenting the selector shaft with the drive member in engagement with any selected drive wheel, wherein the detenting means includes recesses and a flexible resilient finger cooperable with the recesses, wherein the recesses correspond to the drive wheels of the first width and to the drive wheels of the second width, the flexible resilient finger and recesses being cooperable within the continuous opening, and wherein the detecting means is capable of detenting the selector shaft irrespective of whether the drive wheels are of the first width or of the second width.
