Claims
- 1. A hand-held labeler adapted to print and apply pressure sensitive labels releasably secured to the carrier web, comprising: a housing, a manually engageable handle connected to the housing, means for printing on labels, the printing means including an electrically selectable print head having a plurality of printing elements, means for delaminating printed labels, means for applying printed labels, means for advancing the carrier web, means defining a path for guiding the web from the label roll, to the printing means, to the delaminating means, and to the web advancing means, the handle having means for receiving a source of electrical energy to power the print head, and means providing a breakaway connection releasably connecting the handle to the housing for enabling separation of the handle and the housing upon application of excessive force to the labeler to minimize the risk of damage to the labeler.
- 2. A hand-held labeler as defined in claim 1, wherein the breakaway connection includes means providing a generally dove-tail slot and a pair of flexible members engaged in the slot but which are yieldable to enable said separation upon application of the excessive force.
- 3. A hand-held labeler as defined in claim 1, wherein the breakaway connection includes a yieldable member.
- 4. A hand-held labeler as defined in claim 3, further comprising circuits including electrical connectors releasably electrically connecting the source of electrical energy and the print head, wherein at least one of the electrical connectors is supported by the yieldable member.
- 5. A hand-held labeler as defined in claim 1, wherein the breakaway connection includes means providing a generally dove-tailed slot and means including a flexible member engaged in the slot.
- 6. A hand-held labeler adapted to print and apply pressure sensitive labels releasably secured to the carrier web, comprising: a housing, a manually engageable handle connected to the housing, means for printing on labels, the printing means including an electrically selectable print head having a plurality of printing elements, means for delaminating printed labels, means for applying printed labels, means for advancing the carrier web, means defining a path for guiding the web from the label roll, to the printing means, to the delaminating means, and to the web advancing means, the handle having means for receiving a source of electrical energy to power the print head, means providing a slidable connection between the handle and the housing by which the handle is removably connected to the housing, at least two pairs of cooperating J-shaped electrical connectors releasably connecting the source of electrical energy in the handle and the print head, the connectors being disposed so that when the handle is connected to the housing the bottoms of the J's of the connectors of one pair are in contact with the bottoms of the J's of the connectors of the other pair, and wherein the bottoms of the J's of the connectors are yieldably supported by flexible resilient material.
