Claims
- 1. A linear actuator comprising:
- a center guide track;
- a carriage slidably coupled to the center guide track capable of carrying read/write heads, said carriage having a coil;
- a return path for accurately positioning the center guide track, said return path comprising a contiguous one-piece outer return path member and two inner return path members coupled to opposing sides of said outer return path member, said outer return path member and each one of said two inner return path members formed from a plurality of laminas stacked together, said outer return path including:
- a front portion having a front aperture formed therein, an opposing rear portion having a rear aperture formed therein, and two sidewalls coupled to the front portion and the rear portion, said outer return path member bridging said front aperture and said rear aperture, the front portion and the rear portion supporting the guide track therefrom; and
- a permanent magnet disposed proximate the outer return path member;
- whereby forming the inner and outer return path members by stacking laminas enables precise support of the center guide track.
- 2. The return path of claim 1 wherein said outer return path includes at least one bottom lamina and at least one top lamina, each one of said at least one bottom lamina and said at least one top lamina forming a bridge across the front aperture and another bridge across the rear aperture.
- 3. The return path of claim 2 wherein each one of said at least one bottom lamina and said at least one top lamina form a substantially rectangular shape.
- 4. The return path of claim 2 wherein the outer return path includes a plurality of intermediate laminas disposed between the top lamina and the bottom lamina and coupled theretogether.
- 5. The return path of claim 4 wherein said plural intermediate laminas include a plurality of first intermediate laminas and a plurality of second intermediate laminas, said plural first laminas mutually stacked together, said plural second laminas mutually stacked together, a front end of the stacked first intermediate laminas being spaced apart from a front end of the stacked second intermediate laminas to form the front aperture, a rear end of the stacked first intermediate laminas being spaced apart from a front end of the stacked second intermediate laminas to form the rear aperture.
- 6. The return path of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first side portion and the second side portion forms a protruding lug capable of attaching the outer return path to a drive base.
- 7. The return path of claim 6 wherein the protruding lug is formed from one of the intermediate laminas.
- 8. The return path of claim 1 wherein the outer return path is approximately 35.5 mm long.
- 9. The return path of claim 1 wherein the outer return path is approximately 6 mm high.
- 10. A linear actuator comprising:
- a center guide track;
- a carriage slidably coupled to the guide track capable of carrying read/write heads, said carriage having a coil;
- a return path for accurately positioning a center guide track, said return path comprising a contiguous outer return path member and two inner return path members coupled to opposing sides of said outer return path member, said outer return path member and each one of said two inner return path members formed from a plurality of laminas stacked together, said outer return path including a front portion having a front aperture formed therein and a rear portion having a rear aperture formed therein, said outer return bridging said front aperture and said rear aperture, said outer return path member including at least one bottom lamina, at least one top lamina, and a plurality of intermediate laminas disposed between the top lamina and the bottom lamina and coupled theretogether, each one of said at least one bottom lamina and said at least one top lamina forming a bridge across the front aperture and another bridge across the rear aperture, said plural intermediate laminas including a plurality of first intermediate laminas and a plurality of second intermediate laminas, said plural first laminas mutually stacked together, said plural second laminas mutually stacked together, a front end of the stacked first intermediate laminas being spaced apart from a front end of the stacked second intermediate laminas to form the front aperture a rear end of the stacked first intermediate laminas being spaced apart from a front end of the stacked second intermediate laminas to form the rear aperture, at least one of the stacked first intermediate laminas and at least one of the stacked second intermediate laminas having a cantilever member protruding into the front aperture, said at least one cantilever member being capable of supporting a support member for holding an actuator center guide track, and
- a permanent magnet disposed proximate the outer return path member; whereby forming the inner and outer return path members by stacking laminas enables precise support of the center guide track.
- 11. A return path and guide track combination for a linear actuator of a disk drive, the combination comprising:
- a guide track enabling the linear actuator to slide thereon; and
- a contiguous outer return path member, said outer return path member formed from a plurality of laminas stacked together, said outer return path having a member protruding therefrom that supports an end of the center guide track.
- 12. The combination of claim 11 wherein both ends of the guide track are connected to the outer return path and supported therefrom.
- 13. The combination of claim 11 further comprising a lug protruding from the outer return path capable of attaching the entire outer return path to a base.
