Claims
- 1. A multi-phase adhesive composition especially adapted to bond two dissimilar materials one of which is polymeric material and the other of which is a porous hydrophilic material comprising a continuous phase of water, a major dispersed phase of a copolymer of ethylene and a terminally ethylenically unsaturated organic compound containing three to five carbon atoms, and a second minor dispersed phase comprising a solute polymer of the same chemical kind as the polymeric material to be bonded but having an average molecular weight of from about 4 to 100 percent of the average molecular weight of said polymeric material to be bonded, and said solute polymer being dissolved in a solvent for said polymer.
- 2. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said major dispersed phase is from about 65 to 95 percent by weight of said adhesive composition and said solute polymer comprises from about 15 to 50 percent by weight of said minor dispersed phase.
- 3. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 2 wherein said terminally ethylenically unsaturated organic compound is vinyl acetate, propylene, butene-1, pentene-1, ethyl acrylate or methyl acrylate, and said solute polymer is polystyrene, an acrylic polymer or a methacrylic polymer and has an average molecular weight of from about 5 to 15 percent of the average molecular weight of the polymeric material to be bonded.
- 4. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate and said solute polymer is polystyrene.
- 5. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said copolymer is an acetoxylated ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and said solute polymer is polystyrene.
- 6. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said composition additionally contains an insolubilizing agent for the protective colloid used for the major dispersed phase, and a plasticizer for the solute polymer.
- 7. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said adhesive composition after drying upon application has solute polymer particles bonded to the polymeric material and said first dispersed material surrounds said polymer particles so as to mechanically interlock with said polymer particles.
- 8. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said terminally ethylenically unsaturated organic compound is an alpha-olefin, unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, unsaturated aliphatic alcohol or an ester of a saturated monocarboxylic acid and terminally ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic alcohol.
- 9. A multi-phase adhesive composition as defined in claim 1 wherein said terminally ethylenically unsaturated organic compound is vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate, propylene, butene-1 or pentene-1.
