Claims
- 1. A laminate comprising substrates bound together by an adhesive formed in situ by
- a polymeric polyol A having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 1,000-5,000 and soluble in methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate to the extent of at least 65% by weight chain-extended and thereby increased in molecular weight by reaction with an isocyanate-capped polyester-urethane B making a block copolymer therewith,
- said polyester-urethane B being formed from a hydroxyl-bearing polyester made from at least one polyol and at least one diacid wherein
- the ratio ##EQU7## is within the range 1.05/1-1.5/1 and the molecular weight M.sub.n =500-4,000,
- the ratio ##EQU8## is within the range 5/1-.infin., the ratio ##EQU9## is within the range 0-0.08/1, and the ratio ##EQU10## is within the range 2/1-1.3/1.
- 2. A laminate comprising substrates bound together by an adhesive formed from
- A. a hydroxyl-terminated polymeric polyol having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 1,000-5,000 and soluble in methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate to the extent of at least 65% by weight;
- B. an isocyanate-capped polyol-urethane having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 500-4,000 and capable of forming a block copolymer with and thereby extending polyol A; and
- C. a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, the equivalent ratio of --OH/--NCO being about 1/1 and B supplying at least 50-94% by weight of B plus C.
- 3. A laminate of claim 2 wherein the substrates are flexible.
- 4. A laminate of claim 3 wherein a polyethylene film is bound to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) film.
- 5. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid/azelaic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.2/1.0//0.15/0.25/0.60,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 57.24/33.67/9.09 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 78.74/21.26.
- 6. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.3/1.0//0.2/0.3/0.5,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 57.24/33.67/9.09 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 78.74/21.26.
- 7. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.3/1.0//0.2/0.3/0.5,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 48.29/42.61/9.1 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 82.4/17.60.
- 8. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid/azelaic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.1/1.2//0.15/0.25/0.60,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 48.29/42.61/9.10 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 82.4/17.60.
- 9. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid/azelaic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.2/1.1//0.15/0.25/0.60,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 48.29/42.61/9.10 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 82.40/17.60.
- 10. A laminate of claim 2 wherein, in the adhesive,
- A is a polyester of trimethylol propane/ethylene glycol//terephthalic acid/isophthalic acid/azelaic acid of the mole ratio of about 0.2/1.0//0.15/0.25/0.60,
- the dry weight ratio A/B/C being about 57.24/33.67/9.09 and the dry weight ratio B/C being about 78.47/21.26.
- 11. The process of forming a flexible laminate which comprises bonding together a film of polyethylene and a film of poly(ethylene terephthalate) by means of an adhesive wherein a polymeric polyol A having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 1,000-5,000 and soluble in methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate to the extent of at least 65% by weight is chain-extended and thereby increased in molecular weight by reaction with an isocyanate-capped polyester-urethane B making a block copolymer therewith,
- said polyester-urethane B being formed from a hydroxyl-bearing polyester made from at least one polyol and at least one diacid wherein
- the ratio ##EQU11## is within the range 1.05/1-1.5/1 and the molecular weight M.sub.n =500-4,000,
- the ratio ##EQU12## is within the range 5/1-.infin., the ratio ##EQU13## is within the range 0-0.08/1, and the ratio ##EQU14## is within the range 2/1-1.3/1.
- 12. The process of forming flexible laminate which comprises bonding together a film of polyethylene and a film of poly(ethylene terephthalate) by means of an adhesive wherein
- A. a hydroxyl-terminated polymeric polyol having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 1,000-5,000 and soluble in methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate to the extent of at least 65% by weight;
- B. an isocyanate-capped polyol-urethane having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 500-4,000 and capable of forming a block copolymer with and thereby extending polyol A; and
- C. a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, the equivalent ratio of --OH/--NCO being about 1/1 and B supplying at least 50-94% by weight of B plus C.
- 13. In the process of forming a high solids adhesive, the steps of admixing and curing between substrates it is desired to adhere together
- a polymeric polyol A having a molecular weight M.sub.n of about 1,000-5,000 and soluble in methyl ethyl ketone or ethyl acetate to the extent of at least 65% by weight and
- an isocyanate-capped polyester-urethane B capable of forming a block copolymer with the polymeric polyol A,
- said polyester-urethane B being formed from a hydroxyl-bearing polyester made from at least one polyol and at least one diacid wherein
- the ratio ##EQU15## is within the range 1.05/1-1.5/1 and the molecular weight M.sub.n =500-4,000,
- the ratio ##EQU16## is within the range 5.1-.infin., the ratio ##EQU17## is within the range 0-0.8/1, and the ratio ##EQU18## is within the range 2/1-1.3/1.
- 14. A process of claim 13 wherein a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent C is mixed with the polymeric polyol A and polyester-urethane B.
- 15. A process of claim 14 wherein A forms 25-75% by weight of the mixture of A, B, and C and combined B plus C forms the remaining 75-25%, B forming 94-50% by weight of combined B plus C.
