Claims
- 1. A plating system for a laminoplasty procedure, comprising:
a spacer portion including a first end and a second end and a longitudinal axis extending therebetween, wherein said spacer portion is positionable between first and second portions of a divided lamina; and a first lamina engagement portion adjacent said first end, wherein said first lamina engagement portion includes at least one lamina stabilizing flange positionable along at least two of an anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising:
a second lamina engagement portion adjacent said second end, wherein said second lamina engagement portion includes at least one lamina stabilizing flange positionable along at least one of an anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the second portion of the divided lamina.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of the second lamina engagement portion is positionable along two or more of the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the second portion of the divided lamina.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange is a cuff that substantially surrounds the first portion of the divided lamina when positioned thereon.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange is a cup that completely encloses the first portion of the divided lamina when positioned thereon.
- 6. The system of claim 1, further comprising:
a second lamina engagement portion adjacent said second end, wherein said second lamina engagement portion includes a first lamina stabilizing flange positionable along a separation surface of the second portion of the divided lamina and a second lamina stabilizing flange positionable along a posterior surface of the second portion of the divided lamina.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein said spacer portion and said first lamina engagement portion are of unitary construction.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein said spacer portion and said first lamina engagement portion are bendable to provide a desired fit with the first and second portions of the divided lamina.
- 9. The system of claim 1, wherein said first lamina engagement portion includes a first lamina stabilizing flange positionable along the posterior surface of the first portion of the divided lamina and a second lamina stabilizing flange positionable along the anterior surface of the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 10. The system of claim 9, wherein said first lamina stabilizing flange includes a securement opening to receive a securement device therethrough for engagement with the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 11. The system of claim 9, wherein said second lamina stabilizing flange includes a bone engagement mechanism extending therefrom for engagement with the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein said spacer portion includes at least one securement hole extending therethrough.
- 13. The system of claim 12, further comprising:
a spacer member attachable to said at least one securement hole, wherein said spacer member is positionable between the first and second portions of the divided lamina in contact with the separation surfaces of the first and second portions.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein said spacer member is a fusion device.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein said at least one securement hole is an elongated slot.
- 16. The system of claim 15, wherein said elongated slot includes a recessed surface therearound along a posterior surface of said spacer portion.
- 17. The system of claim 12, wherein said at least one securement hole includes a recessed surface therearound permitting variable angle placement of a securement device through said securement hole.
- 18. The system of claim 12, wherein said at least one securement hole is an elongated slot.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein said spacer portion includes a width transverse to the longitudinal axis, said width being enlarged portion about said elongated slot.
- 20. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange includes a pair of securement holes extending therethrough to receive securement devices to secure the at least one flange to the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 21. The system of claim 20, wherein said pair of securement holes are aligned with the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 22. The system of claim 20, wherein said pair of securement holes each includes a recessed surface to permit variable angle placement of a securement device therethrough.
- 23. The system of claim 20, further comprising:
a second lamina engagement portion adjacent said second end, said second lamina engagement portion including at least one lamina stabilizing flange positionable along the posterior surface of the second portion of the divided lamina, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes.
- 24. The system of claim 23, wherein said pair of securement holes of said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion are aligned along an axis extending transversely to the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 25. The system of claim 23, wherein:
said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a pair of nodes, each of which includes a corresponding one of said pair of securement holes thereof; and said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of nodes, each of which includes a corresponding one of said pair of securement holes thereof.
- 26. The system of claim 25, wherein:
said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a reduced width portion between said pair of nodes thereof and said spacer portion; and said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a reduced width portion between said pair of nodes thereof and said spacer portion.
- 27. The system of claim 1, wherein said spacer portion includes at least one restraining member along an anterior surface of said spacer portion, said at least one restraining member configured to engage a spacer member positioned along said anterior surface.
- 28. The system of claim 27, wherein said at one restraining member includes an elongated rib and said spacer member includes a groove adapted to receive said rib.
- 29. The system of claim 1, further comprising:
a spacer member attachable to said spacer portion and positionable between the first and second portions of the divided lamina in contact with separation surfaces of the first and second portions of the divided lamina.
- 30. The system of claim 29, wherein said spacer member is deformable to conform to a shape of the separation surfaces of the first and second portion of the divided lamina.
- 31. The system of claim 29, wherein said spacer member includes a first concave end surface abuttable against the separation surface of the first portion of the divided lamina and a second concave end surface abuttable against the separation surface of the second portion of the divided lamina.
- 32. The system of claim 1, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a first flange positionable along a posterior surface of the first portion of the divided lamina and a second flange oriented transversely to said first flange and positionable along one of the superior and inferior surfaces of the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 33. The system of claim 32, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a third flange oriented transversely to said second flange and positionable along the anterior surface of the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 34. The system of claim 32, wherein said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a third flange oriented transversely to said first flange and positionable along the other of the superior and inferior surfaces of the first portion of the divided lamina.
- 35. The system of claim 1, further comprising:
a second lamina engagement portion adjacent said second end, wherein said second lamina engagement portion includes a first flange positionable along the posterior surface of the second portion of the divided lamina, said second lamina engagement portion further comprising a pair of second flanges extending transversely to said first flange, said pair of second flanges positionable along a separation surface of the second portion of the divided lamina and including a space therebetween to facilitate fusion of the second portion of the divided lamina with a spacer member positioned adjacent thereto.
- 36. A laminoplasty plate, comprising:
a spacer portion extending along a longitudinal axis between a first and a second end; a first lamina engagement portion adjacent said first end, said first lamina engagement portion including at least one stabilizing flange including at least one securement hole extending therethrough aligned with the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion; and a second lamina engagement portion adjacent said second end, said second lamina engagement portion including at least one stabilizing flange including at least one securement hole extending therethrough offset from the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 37. The plate of claim 36, wherein said at least one stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes aligned with the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 38. The plate of claim 37, wherein said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes offset on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 39. The plate of claim 36, wherein said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes offset on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 40. The plate of claim 36, wherein said spacer portion includes at least one securement hole extending therethrough.
- 41. The plate of claim 36, wherein said at least one securement hole of said spacer portion is an elongated slot.
- 42. The plate of claim 41, wherein said spacer portion includes a width transverse to the longitudinal axis, said width being enlarged about said elongated slot.
- 43. The plate of claim 41, wherein said elongated slot includes a recessed surface extending therearound permitting variable angle placement of a securement device therethrough.
- 44. The plate of claim 36, wherein:
said at least one stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes extending therethrough to receive securement devices, said pair of securement holes each being aligned along the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion; and said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of securement holes extending therethrough to receive securement devices, said pair of securement holes each being offset on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 45. The plate of claim 44, wherein said pair of securement holes of said at least one lamina stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion are aligned along an axis extending orthogonally to the longitudinal axis of said spacer portion.
- 46. The plate of claim 44, wherein:
said at least one stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a pair of nodes, each of which includes a corresponding one of said pair of securement holes thereof; and said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a pair of nodes, each of which includes a corresponding one of said pair of securement holes thereof.
- 47. The plate of claim 46, wherein:
said at least one stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion includes a reduced width portion between said pair of nodes thereof and said spacer portion; and said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion includes a reduced width portion between said pair of nodes thereof and said spacer portion.
- 48. The plate of claim 46, wherein each of said securement holes includes a recessed surface therearound permitting variable angle placement of securement devices therein.
- 49. The plate of claim 36 wherein:
said at least one stabilizing flange of said first lamina engagement portion forms a first angle with said spacer portion; and said at least one stabilizing flange of said second lamina engagement portion forms a second angle with said spacer portion.
- 50. The plate of claim 49, wherein said first and second angles each range from about 35 degrees to about 55 degrees.
- 51. The plate of claim 49, wherein said first and second angles are each about 45 degrees.
- 52. The plate of claim 49, wherein said at least one stabilizing flanges of each of said first and second lamina engagement portions extend generally parallel to one another from said spacer portion.
- 53. A plate for stabilizing a surgically divided spinal lamina associated with a laminoplasty, comprising:
a spacer portion and means extending from an end of said spacer portion for restraining movement between said spacer portion and the surgically divided spinal lamina in at least two directions transverse to a longitudinal axis of the divided spinal lamina.
- 54. The plate of claim 53, wherein said means for restraining movement includes a plurality of flanges positionable about three sides of the divided spinal lamina.
- 55. The plate of claim 53, wherein said means for restraining movement includes a cuff crimpable about the divided spinal lamina, said cuff including a slot extending along the divided spinal lamina.
- 56. The plate of claim 53, wherein said means for restraining movement includes a cup positionable completely about the divided spinal lamina, said cup including an opening at each end thereof.
- 57. The plate of claim 53, wherein said means for restraining includes a first flange positonable along a posterior surface of the divided spinal lamina and a second flange positionable along an anterior surface of the divided spinal lamina, said first and second flanges defining a bone grasping portion therebetween.
- 58. The plate of claim 57, wherein said first and second flanges each include at least one bone engagement mechanism extending therefrom.
- 59. A system for a laminoplasty procedure to stabilize at least one divided spinal lamina, comprising:
a spacer portion positionable in a gap formed adjacent the at least one divided spinal lamina; and a first lamina engagement portion extending from an end of said spacer portion, wherein said first lamina engagement portion is adapted to contact the at least one divided spinal lamina at a plurality of locations about its perimeter.
- 60. The system of claim 59, wherein said plurality of locations includes at least two of the anterior, posterior, superior, inferior surfaces of the at least one divided spinal lamina.
- 61. The system of claim 59, wherein said plurality of locations includes at least three of the anterior, posterior, superior, inferior and surfaces of the at least one divided spinal lamina.
- 62. The system of claim 59, wherein said spacer portion includes a length adapted to span from the at least one divided spinal lamina to a second divided spinal lamina, the divided spinal laminae being on opposite sides of the spinal canal.
- 63. The system of claim 62, wherein said spacer portion extends along a radius between the divided spinal laminae.
- 64. The system of claim 62, wherein said first lamina engagement portion includes a first pair of flanges defining a first bone grasping portion therebetween to receive the at least one divided spinal lamina, and further comprising a second lamina engagement portion at a second end of said spacer portion including a second pair of flanges defining a second bone grasping portion therebeween to receive the second divided spinal lamina.
- 65. A laminoplasty plate for securing a surgically divided spinal lamina associated with a laminoplasty, comprising:
a spacer portion having a first end and a second end, wherein said spacer portion is positionable adjacent to the divided lamina portions; and a first lamina engagement portion extending from said first end of said spacer portion, wherein said first lamina engagement portion includes a lamina stabilizing flange adapted to extend substantially about the first portion of the divided spinal lamina.
- 66. The plate of claim 65, wherein said lamina stabilizing flange is a rounded cuff including a slot extending along the divided spinal lamina.
- 67. The plate of claim 65, wherein said lamina stabilizing flange is crimpable about the divided spinal lamina.
- 68. The plate of claim 65, wherein said lamina stabilizing flange is a cup that completely encloses the divided spinal lamina.
- 69. A method for stabilizing at least one surgically divided spinal lamina associated with a laminoplasty, comprising:
providing a laminoplasty plate including a spacer portion that includes a first end and a second end, wherein the laminoplasty plate further includes a first lamina engagement portion adjacent the first end, wherein the first lamina engagement portion is adapted to extend about at least two of the anterior, posterior, inferior and superior surfaces of a first divided lamina portion; retaining a predetermined gap between a first divided lamina portion and a second divided lamina portion with the spacer portion of the laminoplasty plate; and engaging the first lamina engagement portion to the first divided lamina portion.
- 70. The method of claim 69, wherein providing the laminoplasty plate includes providing the laminoplasty plate with a second lamina engagement portion adjacent the second end of the spacer portion, wherein the second lamina engagement portion is adapted engage the second divided lamina portion.
- 71. The method of claim 69, wherein engaging the first lamina engagement portion includes crimping the first lamina engagement portion to the first divided lamina portion.
- 72. The method of claim 69, further comprising positioning a spacer member between the first divided lamina portion and the second divided lamina portion.
- 73. The method of claim 72, further comprising fusing the first and second divided lamina portions with the spacer member.
- 74. The method of claim 72, further comprising securing the spacer member to the spacer portion.
- 75. The method of claim 69, wherein engaging the first lamina engagement portion includes bending the first lamina engagement portion to contact the first divided lamina portion.
- 76. A method for stabilizing surgically divided spinal laminae associated with a French door laminoplasty, comprising:
providing a laminoplasty plate including a spacer portion that includes opposed first and second ends and also includes a first lamina engagement portion adjacent the first end of the spacer portion and a second lamina engagement portion adjacent the second end of the spacer portion; and positioning the plate adjacent the divided spinal laminae so that the spacer portion extends across a gap formed by a removal of a spinal process associated with the vertebra and between a first divided lamina and a second divided lamina on opposing sides of the gap.
- 77. The method of claim 76, wherein positioning the plate includes contacting the first lamina engagement portion with at least two of the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the first divided lamina.
- 78. The method of claim 77, wherein positioning the plate includes positioning first and second flanges of the first lamina engagement portion along posterior and anterior surfaces of the first divided lamina.
- 79. The method of claim 77, wherein positioning the plate includes contacting the second lamina engagement portion with at least two of the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the second divided lamina.
- 80. The method of claim 79, wherein positioning the plate includes positioning first and second flanges of the first lamina engagement portion along posterior and anterior surfaces of the first divided lamina and positioning first and second flanges of the second lamina engagement portion along posterior and anterior surfaces of the second divided lamina.
- 81. The method of claim 78, wherein positioning the plate includes moving at least one of the first and second flanges toward the other to embed a bone engagement mechanism on at least one of the first and second flanges in the first divided lamina.
- 82. The method of claim 76, wherein providing the laminoplasty plate includes providing the first lamina engagement portion with three flanges and positioning the plate includes positioning the three flanges in contact with three of the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the first divided lamina.
- 83. The method of claim 82, wherein providing the laminoplasty plate includes providing the second lamina engagement portion with three flanges and positioning the plate includes positioning the three flanges of the second lamina engagement portion in contact with three of the anterior, posterior, superior and inferior surfaces of the second divided lamina.
- 84. A laminoplasty bridging device for maintaining separation between first and second divided lamina portions, comprising:
a spacer body including a first end with a first concave surface abuttable against a separation surface of the first divided lamina portion and an opposite second end with a second concave surface abuttable against a separation surface of the second divided lamina portion.
- 85. The device of claim 84, wherein said spacer body includes an anterior surface and an opposite posterior surface, said posterior surface including a bore for receiving a securement device of a laminoplasty plating system.
- 86. The device of claim 84, wherein said first and second concave surfaces are concavely curved.
- 87. The device of claim 84, wherein said first and second ends extend at least partially along the adjacent divided lamina portion when said concave surfaces are abutted thereagainst.
