Claims
- 1. A laser comprising
a laser diode chip optically coupled to a passive intra-cavity tapered waveguide.
- 2. The laser of claim 1 wherein the laser is configured to produce a single transverse mode.
- 3. The laser of claim 1 wherein the waveguide comprises material having a high optical damage threshold.
- 4. The laser of claim 3 wherein the material is a semiconductor having a large band gap energy.
- 5. The laser of claim 1 wherein the waveguide comprises a crystalline material.
- 6. The laser of claim 5 wherein the crystalline material is a single crystal.
- 7. The laser of claim 5 wherein the crystalline material comprises a II-VI compound semiconductor material.
- 8. The laser of claim 7 wherein the II-VI compound semiconductor material comprises BeZnTe.
- 9. The laser of claim 1 wherein the waveguide comprises a glass.
- 10. The laser of claim 1 wherein reflections at the interface of the laser diode chip and waveguide are minimized.
- 11. The laser of claim 10 wherein the laser diode chip includes an anti-reflective coating on its surface at the interface of the laser diode chip and waveguide.
- 12. The laser diode of claim 10 wherein each of the laser diode chip and waveguide include an anti-reflective coating on its surface at the interface of the laser diode and waveguide.
- 13. The laser of claim 1 wherein the waveguide has a length of 0.5 centimeters or more.
- 14. An optical amplifier comprising the laser of claim 1.
- 15. The optical amplifier of claim 14 wherein the amplifier is doped with a rare earth metal.
- 16. The optical amplifier of claim 15 wherein the amplifier is doped with erbium.
- 17. The optical amplifier of claim 16 wherein the amplifier is further doped with thulium.
- 18. The optical amplifier of claim 14 wherein the amplifier is a raman amplifier.
- 19. The optical amplifier of claim 16 wherein the laser has an output beam wavelength of about 980 nm or about 1480 nmn.
- 20. The optical amplifier of claim 18 wherein the laser has an output beam wavelength of about 1365 nm to about 1530 nm.
- 21. A laser printing system comprising the laser of claim 1.
- 22. A Second Harmonic Generation laser system comprising the laser of claim 1.
