Claims
- 1. A method for perforating skin without the use of a sharp object comprising the steps of
- a) focusing a laser beam in the shape of an ellipse at a surface of the skin with sufficient energy to create a hole at least as deep as a keratin layer of the skin and at most as deep as a capillary layer of the skin; and
- b) creating at least one hole, each hole having a width between 0.05 and 0.5 mm and a length equal to or less than 2.5 mm.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the laser beam has a wavelength of 2-7 microns.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the laser beam is emitted by a laser selected from the group consisting of Er:YAG, pulsed CO.sub.2, Ho:YAG, Er:YAP, Er/Cr:YSGG, Ho:YSGG, Er:GGSG, Er:YLF, Tm:YAG, Ho:YAG, Ho/Nd:YAlO.sub.3, cobalt:MgF.sub.2, HF chemical, DF chemical, carbon monoxide, deep UV lasers, diode lasers and frequency tripled Nd:YAG lasers.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the laser beam has a wavelength of 2.94 microns.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein the laser beam is emitted by an Er:YAG laser.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the energy density of the laser beam at the skin is 10-100,000 J/cm.sup.2.
- 7. A method for perforating skin for drawing blood without the use of a sharp object comprising the steps of
- a) focusing a laser beam at the surface of the skin with sufficient energy fluence to create a hole at least as deep as a capillary layer of the skin; and
- b) creating at least one hole, each hole being elliptical in shape and having a width between 0.05 and 0.5 mm and a length of equal to or less than 2.5 mm.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the blood is collected in a container positioned proximal to a perforation site through which the laser beam passes.
- 9. A method for perforating skin for the purpose of delivering a pharmaceutical through the skin without the use of a sharp object comprising the steps of
- a) focusing a laser beam at a surface of the skin with sufficient energy to create a hole at least as deep as a keratin layer of the skin and at most as deep as a capillary layer of the skin; and
- b) creating at least one hole, each hole being elliptical in shape and having a width between 0.05 and 0.5 mm and a length of equal to or less than 2.5 mm.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the pharmaceutical is selected from an anesthetic, an immunogen and an allergen.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the pharmaceutical is for the treatment of a disease.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the pharmaceutical is applied in a patch placed over the perforation.
- 13. The method of claim 9 wherein multiple holes are created through the use of a beam splitter which creates multiple beams which focus at the surface of the skin simultaneously.
- 14. The method of claim 9 wherein multiple holes are created through the use of an acousto-optic modulator to vary the angle of the beam to focus the beam consecutively at different positions on the surface of the skin.
- 15. The method of claim 9 wherein each hole is elliptical in shape with one axis measuring 0.05-0.5 mm and the other axis measuring less than or equal to 2.5 mm.
- 16. The method of claim 9 wherein the pharmaceutical is for the diagnosis of a disease.
