- 3. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 2, comprising means for moving said carrier and said beam-splitting device relative to said beam generating means.
- 4. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 3, wherein said moving means are arranged to move said carrier periodically and repeatedly into and out of positions in which said beam-splitting device is in the path of the laser beam.
- 5. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 2, wherein said beam-splitting device is constructed to split said laser beam into a plurality of fractional beams adapted to outline an area of a target
- 6. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 2, wherein said beam-splitting device is constructed to split said laser beam into a plurality of fractional beams serving to define a pattern on a target.
- 7. In combination, a laser beam modifying device as claimed in claim 1, and means to increase the power of said means for generating a laser beam when said laser beam is split into a plurality of fractional beams.
- 8. In combination, a laser beam modifying device as claimed in claim 1, and means to change the power, of said means for generating said laser beam, when said beam is changed by said beam-splitting device.
- 9. The combination of claim 8 wherein said means serving to change the power are attenuator means.
- 10. The combination of claim 7 wherein said means to increase the power of said means for generating a laser beam are arranged to increase the power by the factor of the number of fractional beams generated.
- 11. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 4, wherein said moving means are arranged to move said beam-splitting device into and out of the path of the laser beam at a rate sufficient to cause persistence of vision.
- 12. A laser beam modifying device, as claimed in claim 11, wherein said rate is at least twelve times per second.
- 13. In combination, an instrument incorporating means for generating a laser beam for aiming of the instrument at an area of a target, and a carrier mounted on said instrument and having a beam-splitting device, said carrier being movable with respect to the instrument into respective positions in which said beam-splitting device is presented in the path of said laser beam, and in which said beam-splitting device is withdrawn from the path of said laser beam.
- 14. In combination, an instrument incorporating means for generating a laser beam for aiming of the instrument at an area of a target, and an attachment supporting a beam-splitting device, said instrument and said attachment having respective means for mounting said attachment removably on said instrument in a position in which said beam-splitting device is in the path of said laser beam.
- 15. The combination of claim 14, wherein said instrument has an opening to receive removably a portion of said attachment.
- 16. The combination of claim 15, wherein said opening and said attachment portion are correspondingly screw-threaded.
- 17. The combination of claim 14 comprising a projection on said instrument, and wherein said attachment is U-shaped and has in one leg of the U-shape a slot for slidable engagement with said projection.
- 18. A method for providing selectively a single laser beam for aiming of an instrument at a target, and a plurality of fractional laser beams derived from said single laser beam for defining an area of said target, which comprises steps of:
(a) generating a primary laser beam, and (b) splitting said primary beam into a plurality of fractional beams for projecting at selected points of said target.
- 19. A method for providing selectively a single laser beam for aiming of an instrument at a target, and a plurality of fractional laser beams derived from said single laser beam for defining an area of said target, which comprises steps of:
(a) generating a primary laser beam, (b) splitting said primary laser beam into a plurality of fractional beams for projecting serially at successive selected points of said target.
- 20. A method for providing selectively a single laser beam, and a derivative secondary laser beam, respectively for aiming of an instrument at a target, and for defining an area of said target, which comprises steps of:
(a) generating a primary laser beam; and (b) modifying said primary beam to form a derivative closed-loop beam for projection at said target
