Claims
- 1. A latex composition for coating films, comprising:
- multi-layered particles suspended in aqueous solution, said multi-layered particles including:
- (a) an acrylic seed layer;
- (b) an intermediate layer of a vinylidene chloride monomer, an acrylic ester monomer, and an acrylic acid monomer, forming a terpolymer having a high vinylidene chloride concentration; and,
- (c) an outer skin layer of a vinylidene chloride monomer, acrylic ester monomer, and an acrylic acid monomer, forming a terpolymer having a low vinylidene chloride concentration.
- 2. The latex composition of claim wherein said acrylic ester is selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-propyl acrylate, isopropyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate and hexyl acrylate, and
- said acrylic acid monomer is selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid and maleic acid.
- 3. The latex composition of claim 2, wherein said acrylic seed layer comprises a methacrylate monomer and said acrylic acid monomer.
- 4. The latex composition of claim 3, wherein said methacrylate monomer is selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, n-propyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene.
- 5. The latex composition of claim 4, wherein said acrylic ester monomer is methyl acrylate, said methacrylate monomer is methyl methacrylate, and said acrylic acid monomer is methacrylic acid.
- 6. The latex composition of claim 5, wherein said multi-layered particles comprise:
- (a) said seed layer having from about 25.4 to about 65.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate and from about 34.6 to about 74.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate;
- (b) said intermediate core layer having from about 78.2 to about 98.2 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 5.7 to about 15.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate and from about 0.5 to about 1.5 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and,
- (c) said outer skin layer having from about 68 to about 78 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 16 to about 26 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and from about 0.5 to about 1.5 parts by weight methacrylic acid.
- 7. The coating composition of claim 6, wherein said multi-layered particles comprise:
- (a) said acrylic seed layer having from about 35.4 to about 55.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate and from about 44.6 to about 64.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate;
- (b) said intermediate core layer having from about 83 to about 95 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 7.7 to about 13.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and from about 0.8 to about 1.2 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and
- (c) said outer skin layer having from about 70 to about 76 parts by weight vinylidene chloride from about 19 to about 23 parts by weight methyl acrylate and from about 0.8 to about 1.3 parts by weight methacrylic acid.
- 8. The latex composition recited in claim 6, wherein said multi-layered particles comprise:
- (a) said seed layer having about 45.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate, and about 64.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate,
- (b) said intermediate core layer having about 88 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, about 10.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and about 1.0 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and,
- (c) said outer skin layer having about 73 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, about 21 parts by weight methyl acrylate and about 1 part by weight methacrylic acid.
- 9. A multi-layered particle for suspending in an aqueous solution, said multi-layered particle including:
- (a) an acrylic seed layer;
- (b) an intermediate layer of a vinylidene chloride monomer, acrylic ester monomer, and an acrylic acid monomer, forming a terpolymer having a high vinylidene chloride concentration; and,
- (c) an outer skin layer of a vinylidene chloride monomer, acrylic ester monomer, an acrylic acid monomer, forming a terpolymer having a low vinylidene chloride concentration.
- 10. The multi-layered particle of claim 9, wherein said acrylic ester is selected from the group consisting of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, n-propyl acrylate, isopropyl acrylate, n-butyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate and hexyl acrylate, and
- said acrylic acid monomer is selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, itaconic acid and maleic acid.
- 11. The multi-layered particle of claim 11, wherein:
- said acrylic seed layer comprises a methacrylate monomer and said acrylic acid monomer.
- 12. The latex composition of claim 11, wherein said methacrylate monomer is selected from the group consisting of methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, n-propyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate and styrene.
- 13. The latex composition of claim 12, wherein said acrylic ester monomer is methyl acrylate, said methacrylate monomer is methyl methacrylate, and said acrylic acid monomer is methacrylic acid.
- 14. The multi-layered particle of claim 13, wherein:
- (a) said seed layer having from about 25.4 to about 65.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate and from about 34.6 to about 74.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate;
- (b) said intermediate core layer having from about 78.2 to about 98.2 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 5.7 to about 15.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate and from about 0.5 to about 1.5 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and,
- (c) said outer skin layer having from about 68 to about 78 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 16 to about 26 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and from about 0.5 to about 1.5 parts by weight methacrylic acid.
- 15. The multi-layered particle of claim 14, wherein:
- (a) said acrylic seed layer having from about 35.4 to about 55.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate and from about 44.6 to about 64.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate;
- (b) said intermediate core layer having from about 83 to about 95 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, from about 7.7 to about 13.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and from about 0.8 to about 1.2 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and,
- (c) said outer skin layer having from about 70 to about 76 parts by weight vinylidene chloride from about 19 to about 23 parts by weight methyl acrylate and from about 0.8 to about 1.3 parts by weight methacrylic acid.
- 16. The multi-layered particle of claim 15, wherein:
- (a) said seed layer having about 45.4 parts by weight methyl methacrylate, and about 64.6 parts by weight methyl acrylate,
- (b) said intermediate core layer having about 88 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, about 10.7 parts by weight methyl acrylate, and about 1.0 parts by weight methacrylic acid; and,
- (c) said outer skin layer having about 73 parts by weight vinylidene chloride, about 21 parts by weight methyl acrylate and about 1 part by weight methacrylic acid.
