Claims
- 1. A latex, comprising:
- an emulsion copolymer in the form of a solid, said emulsion copolymer made by polymerizing (1) at least one latex forming monomer (2) at least one functional type monomer having an activatable methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl ester group and a vinyl group with (3) at least one functional anionic type monomer, wherein said latex forming monomer is a conjugated diene, or a conjugated diene and at least one different conjugated diene comonomer having from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, or a conjugated diene and a vinyl substituted aromatic comonomer having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms, or a vinyl ester having a 1 to 8 carbon atom alkyl ester portion, or a vinyl ester having a 1 to 8 carbon atom alkyl ester portion and at least one ester of a mono or a dicarboxylic acid comonomer having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms, or ethylene, or ethylene and a vinyl chloride comonomer, or ethylene and a vinyl ester comonomer having a 1 to 8 carbon atom alkyl ester portion,
- wherein the total amount of said functional monomers is from 0.5% to about 15% by weight based upon the total weight of said emulsiion copolymer forming monomers,
- wherein the amount of said latex forming monomer is from about 85% to about 99.5% by weight based upon the total weight of said emulsion copolymer forming monomers,
- wherein the pH of said latex is from about 2.0 to about 7.0, wherein said latex contains from about 10 percent to about 60 percent by weight of said copolymer solids,
- and wherein said anionic type functional monomer is an acrylamide or a 1 to 2 carbon atom alkyl derivative thereof, a methacrylamide or a 1 to 2 atom alkyl derivative thereof; or combinations thereof.
- 2. A latex according to claim 1,
- wherein said alkyl derivative of said acrylamide functional monomer having 1 or 2 carbon atoms is attached to either the nitrogen atom, said vinyl group, or both, and wherein said alkyl derivative of said methacrylamide functional monomer having 1 or 2 carbon atoms is attached to either the nitrogen atom, the vinyl group, or both.
- 3. A latex according to claim 2, wherein the amount of said solids in said latex is from about 40% to about 55% by weight, wherein said conjugated diene and said different conjugated diene has from 4 to 6 carbon atoms, wherein the amount of said vinyl substituted aromatic comonomer is from about 0% to about 70% by weight and wherein the amount of said conjugated diene comonomer is from 1% to 99% by weight based upon the weight of the total monomers;
- wherein said vinyl ester has a 1 to 5 carbon alkyl ester portion, wherein said ester of said mono or said dicarboxylic acid monomer is from about 5% to about 50% by weight based upon the weight of the total monomers,
- wherein the amount of said vinyl chloride comonomer is from about 5% to about 40% by weight based upon the weight of the total monomers, wherein said vinyl ester comonomer has a 1 to 5 carbon atoms alkyl ester portion and wherein the amount of said vinyl ester comonomer is from about 5% to about 90% by weight based upon the weight of the total monomers,
- wherein the pH of said latex is from about 2.0 to about 4.0, wherein the amount of said functional monomers if from about 1% to about 10% by weight,
- wherein the amount of said latex forming monomer is from about 90% to about 99% by weight,
- and wherein said activatable ester monomer is
- methyl acrylamidoglycolate (MAG)
- ethyl acrylamidoglycolate (EAT)
- butyl acrylamidoglycolate (BAG)
- methyl acrylamidoglycolate methyl ether (MAGME)
- butyl acrylamidoglycolate butyl ether (BAGBE)
- methyl methacryloxyacetate
- ethyl acrylamido-N-oxalate (N-ethyloxalyl acrylamide)
- N,N'-Bis(ethyloxalyl)acrylamide
- N-isopropyl, N-ethyloxalyl-3-propylamino methacrylamide
- N-ethyloxalyl-N'-methyleneaminoacrylamide
- ethyl N-2-ethyloxamatoacrylate
- ethyl 3-pyruvylacrylate
- ethyl methylenepyruvate
- methyl acrylthiocarbonyloxyacetate (Methyl thiacryloxyacetate)
- methyl thiacrylthioglycolate
- methyl acryl-2-thioglycolate
- methyl thiacrylamidoacetate
- methyl acrylamidoglycolate thioether
- methyl acrylamido-N-methylenethioglycolate, or
- p-ethyl oxalyl styrene.
- 4. A latex according to claim 3, wherein said copolymer is free-radically polymerized,
- wherein said latex forming monomer is butadiene, butadiene and styrene, vinyl acetate, ethylene and vinyl chloride, ethylene and vinyl acetate, or combinations thereof,
- wherein said anionic functional monomer is acrylamide or methacrylamide,
- and wherein said functional activatable ester monomer is methacrylamidoglycolate, methylacrylamidoglycolate methyl ether, butylacrylamidoglycolate, butyacrylamidoglycolate butyl ether, or combinations thereof.
