Claims
- 1. A laundry machine comprising:
- a cabinet;
- means within said cabinet for receiving water and fabrics to be laundered therein and arranged to be unidirectionally rotatable to effect centrifugal displacement of at least some of the water from the fabrics laundered therein;
- means oscillative in said receiving means for agitating the fabrics to effect the laundering thereof;
- an electronically commutated motor within said cabinet including a stationary assembly having a plurality of winding receiving slots arranged generally thereabout, a plurality of winding stages distributed in said slots generally about said stationary assembly and adapted to be commutated in at least one preselected sequence and in at least a pair of preselected different sequences, respectively, and a rotatable assembly associated with said stationary assembly in selective magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages, said rotatable assembly being oscillative upon the commutation of said winding stages in the preselected different sequence pair and also being unidirectionally rotatable upon the commutation of said winding means in the at least one preselected sequence; and
- means arranged in driven association with said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor and selectively operable for transmitting the oscillation of said rotatable assembly to said agitating means so as to effect the conjoint oscillation thereof with said rotatable assembly and for transmitting the unidirectional rotation of said rotatable assembly to said receiving means so as to effect the conjoint unidirectional rotation thereof with said rotatable assembly, respectively.
- 2. A laundry machine comprising:
- a cabinet;
- a spin tub arranged so as to be unidirectionally rotatable in said cabinet;
- an agitator disposed within said spin tub so as to be generally oscillative with respect thereto;
- an electronically commutated motor mounted within said cabinet and including a stator, a plurality of winding receiving slots in said stator and arranged generally thereabout, at least three winding stages adapted to be commutated in at least one preselected sequence and in a pair of preselected different sequences and each of said at least three winding stages comprising a plurality of coils having at least one conductor turn with a pair of opposite side turn portions thereof disposed in said slots, respectively, a rotor associated with said stator and having a plurality of polar regions arranged in magnetic coupling relation with said at least three winding stages upon the commutation thereof, said rotor being oscillated and unidirectionally rotated in response to the commutation of said at least three winding stages in the preselected different sequence pair and the at least one preselected sequence thereof, respectively, and a shaft secured to said rotor; and
- means mounted within said cabinet in association with said electronically commutated motor so as to be directly driven by said rotor shaft thereof and selectively operable for transmitting the oscillation of said rotor to said agitator so as to effect the conjoint oscillation thereof with said rotor and for transmitting the unidirectional rotation of said rotor to said tub so as to effect the conjoint unidirectional rotation thereof with said rotor, respectively.
- 3. A laundry machine comprising:
- a cabinet;
- means for receiving a fluid and fabrics to be laundered therein and arranged so as to be unidirectionally rotatable within said cabinet;
- means oscillative within said receiving means for agitating the fabrics to effect the laundering thereof;
- an electronically commutated motor mounted within said cabinet and having a stationary assembly and a rotatable assembly, said stationary assembly including a plurality of winding stages adapted to be commutated in at least one preselected sequence and in a pair of preselected different sequences, a plurality of slots arranged generally about said stationary assembly and accommodating said winding stages, said winding stages each having a plurality of coils with each of said coils thereof having at least one conductor turn with side turn portions thereof received in said slots, some of said coils in said each winding stage having said side turn portions thereof sharing slots only with said side turn portions of others of said coils in a same winding stage, two pairs of said coils in one of said winding stages of said plurality thereof having side turn portions sharing slots with side turn portions of two pairs of said coils in another two of said winding stages of said plurality thereof, respectively, and another pair of said coils in one of said another two winding stages having side turn portions which do not share slots, said rotatable assembly including a plurality of integrally formed first pole sections of like polarity spaced generally about said rotatable assembly and defining a peripheral portion thereof, a plurality of second pole sections having a polarity opposite that of said first pole sections arranged in preselected positions about said rotatable assembly between adjacent ones of said first pole sections and defining in part said peripheral portions of said rotatable assembly, respectively, a plurality of sets of magnetic material elements engaged between said second pole sections and said adjacent ones of said first pole sections, respectively, and a hardenable nonmagnetic material solidified in place between said first and second pole sections and magnetic material element sets of said plurality thereof and coacting with said magnetic material element sets so as not only to define the polarities of said first and second pole sections from each other but also to prevent displacement of said second pole sections from their preselected positions, respectively, said first and second pole sections being selectively coupled in magnetic relation with said at least three winding stages so as to effect oscillation of said rotatable assembly with respect to said stationary assembly upon the commutation of said at least three winding stages in the preselected different sequence pair and so as to effect unidirectional rotation of said rotatable assembly with respect to said stationary assembly upon the commutation of said at least three winding stages in the at least one preselected sequence; and
- means associated in mounting relation in said cabinet with said electronically commutated motor so as to be directly driven by said rotatable assembly thereof and selectively operable for transmitting the oscillation of said rotatable assembly to said agitating means so as to effect the conjoint oscillation thereof with said rotatable assembly and for transmitting the unidirectional rotation of said rotatable assembly to said receiving means so as to effect the conjoint unidirectional rotation thereof with said rotatable assembly, respectively.
- 4. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a pump device selectively operable for pumping the water from the laundry machine and associated with said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor so as to be driven thereby.
- 5. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a pump device mounted to said electronically commutated motor in driven relation with said rotatable assembly and selectively operable for pumping the water from the laundry machine.
- 6. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 3 further comprising a pump device selectively operable for pumping the water from the laundry machine and associated with said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor so as to be driven thereby.
- 7. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 3 further comprising a pump device selectively operable for pumping the water from the laundry machine, said pump device being mounted to said electronically commutated motor generally opposite at least a part of said transmitting means and associated in driven relation with said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor.
- 8. A laundry machine comprising:
- a cabinet;
- a tub arranged in said cabinet so as to be rotatably supported therein;
- an agitator arranged generally coaxially with said tub so as to be rotatable therein;
- driving means mounted in the cabinet for respectively effecting the rotation of said tub and said agitator including a housing having a chamber defined therein between a pair of opposite walls of said housing, an input shaft rotatable in one of said opposite walls and extending therethrough into said chamber, an input gear on said input shaft within said chamber, a tubular output shaft rotatably mounted in said chamber and extending through the other of said opposite walls so as to connect with said tub, a first output gear on said tubular output shaft within said chamber, another output shaft rotatably mounted in said chamber and extending generally coaxially through said tubular output shaft so as to connect with said agitator, a second output gear on said another output shaft within said chamber, a driven shaft and a driving shaft rotatably mounted in said chamber, a plurality of axially extending splines on said driving shaft, a first pinion gear on said driving shaft and meshed with said input gear on said input shaft, a second pinion gear and a third pinion gear respectively arranged on said driven shaft with said second pinion gear being meshed with said second output gear on said another output shaft, a pair of interconnected stepped shifting gears, a splined bore extending through said stepped shifting gears and receiving said splines on said driving shaft so as to be both conjointly rotatable therewith and selectively axially movable between a pair of axially spaced positions thereon, the larger of said stepped shifting gears being meshed with said first output gear on said tubular output shaft when said stepped shifting gears are in one of the axially spaced positions thereof and the smaller of said shifting gears being meshed with said second output gear on said another shaft when said stepped shifting gears are in the other of the axially spaced positions thereof; and
- an electronically commutated motor mounted in association with said housing adjacent said one opposite wall thereof and including a stationary assembly, a permanent magnet rotatable assembly disposed within said stationary assembly and comprising said input shaft, a plurality of winding stages arranged on said stationary assembly in magnetic coupling relation with said permanent magnet rotatable assembly and adapted to be electronically commutated in a plurality of preselected sequences, said permanent magnet rotatable assembly being rotatable in continuously reversing opposite directions in response to the energization of at least some of said winding stages in one of the preselected sequences with said agitator being conjointly rotatable therewith when said stepped shifting gears are in the one axially spaced position thereof and said permanent magnet rotatable assembly being rotatable continuously in only the one direction in response to the energization of said winding stages in another of the preselected sequences with said tub being conjointly rotatable therewith when said stepped shifting gears are in the other axially spaced position thereof.
- 9. A laundry machine comprising:
- a cabinet;
- a spin tub mounted in said cabinet so as to be rotatable generally in one direction;
- an agitator generally coaxially arranged with said spin tub and mounted in said cabinet so as to be rotatable in the one direction and another direction opposite thereto;
- an electronically commutated motor mounted within said cabinet for driving said spin tub and said agitator, said electronically commutated motor comprising a stationary assembly and a rotatable assembly, said stationary assembly including a stator having a plurality of winding receiving slots therein, and a multi-stage winding arrangement disposed on said stator and having a plurality of winding stages carried in said slots with said winding stages being adapted to be electronically commutated in a plurality of preselected sequences, said rotatable assembly being disposed at least in part within said stator so as to be rotatable generally about a central axis thereof and including a plurality of integrally interconnected poles of a like polarity spaced generally about said rotatable assembly, a plurality of pole pieces having a like polarity different than that of said poles and arranged in selected positions about said rotatable assembly between adjacent ones of said poles, said poles and said pole pieces defining at least in part a peripheral portion of said rotatable assembly and being arranged in magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages of said stator, respectively, a plurality of sets of magnetic material elements engaged between said pole pieces and said adjacent ones of said poles, respectively, and a hardenable nonmagnetic material solidified in place in said rotatable assembly in engagement between said poles, said pole pieces and said magnetic material element sets so as not only to retain said pole pieces against displacement from their selected positions but also to magnetically define said pole pieces from said poles, respectively, said rotatable assembly being oscillated in the one and another directions in response to the electronic commutation of said winding stages in one of the preselected sequences and said rotatable assembly also being rotatable in the one direction in response to the electronic commutation of said winding stages in another of the preselected sequences; and
- means mounted in said cabinet generally between said electronically commutated motor and each of said spin tub and said agitator and operable generally for driving said spin tub and said agitator from said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor.
- 10. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 9 wherein said driving means includes a pair of generally coaxially arranged output means for respective connection with said spin tub and said agitator, an input drive comprising a part of said rotatable assembly, and means interposed between said input drive and said output means pair and selectively operable for transmitting the oscillation of said rotatable assembly in the one and another directions to one of said output means so as to effect the conjoint oscillation therewith of said agitator and for transmitting the rotation of said rotatable assembly in only the one direction to the other of said output means so as to effect the conjoint rotation therewith of said spin tub.
- 11. A laundry machine adapted for operation in at least a wash mode and a spin mode comprising:
- means for agitating water and fabrics to be laundered thereby to wash the fabrics during the wash mode and for thereafter spinning the fabrics to effect centrifugal displacement of water from the fabrics during the spin mode;
- an electronically commutated motor for driving said agitating and spinning means and having a stationary assembly and a permanent magnet rotatable assembly, said stationary assembly including a plurality of winding stages adapted to be electronically commutated in a plurality of preselected sequences, a plurality of slots arranged generally about said stationary assembly and accommodating said winding stages, said winding stages each having a plurality of coils with each of said coils thereof having a plurality of conductor turns with side turn portions thereof received in said slots, some of said coils in said each winding stage having said side turn portions thereof sharing slots only with said side turn portions of other of said coils in the same winding stage, two pairs of said coils in one of said winding stages having side turn portions sharing slots with side turn portions of two pairs of said coils in another two of said winding stages, respectively, and another pair of said coils in one of said another two winding stages having side turn portions which do not share slots, said permanent magnet rotatable assembly including a plurality of discrete polar regions disposed generally thereabout so as to be arranged in magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages upon the electronic commutation thereof, respectively, said permanent magnet rotatable assembly being rotatable in one direction and another direction opposite thereto upon the electronic commutation of at least some of said winding stages in one of the preselected sequences and said permanent magnet rotatable assembly also being rotatable in only the one direction upon the electronic commutation of said winding stages in another of the preselected sequences; and
- means for driving the agitating and spinning means from said permanent magnet rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor.
- 12. A laundry machine adapted for operation in at least a wash mode and a spin mode comprising:
- means for agitating water and fabrics to be laundered thereby to wash the fabrics during the wash mode and for thereafter spinning the fabrics to effect centrifugal displacement of water from the fabrics during the spin mode;
- an electronically commutated motor for driving said agitating and spinning means, said electronically commutated motor comprising a stator, a multi-stage winding arrangement associated with said stator and including a plurality of winding stages adapted to be electronically commutated in a plurality of preselected sequences, and rotatable means associated with said stator and adapted for selective magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages so as to be rotatably driven thereby, said rotatable means being rotatably driven in one direction during the spin mode in response to the electronic commutation of at least some of said winding stages in one of the preselected sequences and being rotatably driven in the one direction and another direction opposite thereto during the wash mode in response to the electronic commutation of said winding stages in another of the preselected sequences; and
- means for driving said agitating and spinning means from said rotatable means.
- 13. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 12 further comprising a pump device operable generally for effecting drainage of the water from the laundry machine at least during the spin mode and arranged in driven relation with said rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor.
- 14. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 12 wherein said pump device is mounted to said electronically commutated motor in the driven relation with the rotatable assembly thereof and spaced generally opposite at least a part of said driving means.
- 15. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 12 wherein said driving means comprises means for reducing the rotational speed of the agitating and spinning means with respect to that of the rotatable assembly of said electronically commutated motor.
- 16. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 12 further comprising means associated with said agitating and spinning means for containing the water in which the fabrics are washed during the wash mode.
- 17. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 16 further comprising a pump drive arranged in communication with said containing means and in driven relation with said rotatable means of said electronically commutated motor and operable generally for draining the water from said containing means at least during the spin mode.
- 18. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 12 wherein said rotatable assembly includes a set of permanent magnet material elements arranged in the selective magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages of said stator, respectively.
- 19. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 18 wherein said set of permanent magnet material elements are imbedded in said rotatable assembly.
- 20. A laundry machine adapted for operation in at least a wash mode and a spin mode comprising:
- means for receiving fabrics to be laundered in water supplied to the laundry machine and unidirectionally rotatable to effect centrifugal displacement of water from the fabrics during the spin mode;
- means associated with said receiving means and rotatably oscillated for agitating the fabrics in the water supplied to the laundry machine thereby to wash the fabrics during the wash mode;
- an electronically commutated motor for driving said receiving means and said agitating means, said electronically commutated motor comprising a stator, a multi-stage winding arrangement associated with said stator and including a plurality of winding stages adapted to be electronically commutated in a plurality of preselected sequences, and a rotatable assembly associated with said stator and arranged in selective magnetic coupling relation with said winding stages so as to be rotatably driven thereby, said rotatable assembly being driven in unidirectional rotation during the spin mode in response to the electronic commutation of at least some of said winding stages in one of the preselected sequences and in oscillating rotation during the wash mode in response to the electronic commutation of said winding stages in another of the preselected sequences; and
- means operable generally for driving said receiving means and said agitating means from said rotatable means during the spin mode and the wash mode, respectively.
- 21. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 20 further comprising a pump device operable generally to drain the water supplied to the laundry machine therefrom at least during the spin mode and arranged for driven relation with said rotatable means of said electronically commutated motor.
- 22. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 20 further comprising means for mounting said pump device onto said electronically commutated motor.
- 23. A laundry machine as set forth in claim 20 wherein said driving means includes means for reducing the rotational speed of said receiving means and said agitating means with respect to that of said rotatable means of said electronically commutated motor.
