Claims
- 1. An auxiliary cutting apparatus attached to a lawnmower having a drive shaft and a blade housing which has a lower housing wall, wherein the drive shaft rotates around a longitudinal axis, said auxiliary cutting apparatus comprising:
a flywheel assembly which includes a flywheel portion connected to the lawnmower drive shaft, an attachment assembly connected onto portions of the lower housing wall of the blade housing, said attachment assembly being operatively coupled to said flywheel portion and having a bearing portion, a trimmer assembly coupled to said attachment assembly through said bearing portion, wherein said attachment assembly includes a rotatable shaft assembly received by said bearing portion, a driven wheel connected between said flywheel portion and a proximal end of said rotatable shaft assembly, and wherein said trimmer assembly includes cutting means operatively coupled to a distal end of said rotatable shaft assembly.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said rotatable shaft assembly is adjustable along its longitudinal axis and wherein said rotatable shaft assembly includes:
a first segment which carries said driven wheel, a second segment which carries said cutting means, and a length-adjustment assembly connected between said first segment and said second segment.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:
said attachment assembly includes a first clamp assembly attachable to a first portion of the lower housing wall of the blade housing, and said first clamp assembly includes a first U-shaped bracket member which slips over a portion of the lower housing wall of the blade housing, and means for fastening said first U-shaped bracket member to the lower housing wall.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said first U-shaped bracket member includes a pair of bearing-receiving apertures for receiving said bearing portion of said rotatable shaft assembly.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said attachment assembly further includes:
a second clamp assembly attached to a second portion of the lower housing wall of the blade housing, and an adjustable-length strut assembly connected between said first clamp assembly.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said second clamp assembly includes:
a second U-shaped bracket member which slips over a portion of the lower housing wall of the blade housing, and fastening means for connecting said second U-shaped bracket member to the lower housing wall.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said adjustable-length strut assembly includes:
a pair of first telescopic members connected to said first clamp assembly, and a pair of second telescopic members connected to said second clamp assembly.
- 8. An edge trimmer apparatus attached to a lawnmower which has a drive shaft and a blade housing which has a lower housing wall, wherein the drive shaft rotates around a longitudinal axis, comprising:
a drive member supported by the drive shaft above the blade housing, a power transmission assembly connected to said drive member and supported by the blade housing, and a trimmer blade unit supported by and driven by said power transmission assembly.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said drive member is a drive pulley supported by the drive shaft and wherein said power transmission assembly includes:
a gear-containing transmission unit supported by the lower housing wall of the blade housing, an endless belt connected between said drive pulley and said gear-containing transmission unit, and a trimmer blade unit supported by and driven by said gear-containing transmission unit.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said gear-containing transmission unit includes:
a first bevel gear assembly connected to the lower housing wall of the blade housing, wherein said first bevel gear assembly supports and drives said trimmer blade unit, a pulley/gear transmission support bracket supported by said first bevel gear assembly, wherein said pulley/gear transmission support bracket includes a vertical first bracket portion and a horizontal second bracket portion, wherein said vertical first bracket portion is connected to said first bevel gear assembly, a driven pulley supported in an overhead manner by said horizontal second bracket portion of said pulley/gear transmission support bracket, a gear-driving shaft connected to said driven pulley, and a second bevel gear assembly connected to said gear-driving shaft, wherein said second bevel gear assembly is enmeshed with said first bevel gear assembly.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said first bevel gear assembly includes:
a bearing portion connected to the lower housing wall of the blade housing, a gear shaft portion retained by said bearing portion and supporting said trimmer blade unit, and a first bevel gear supported by said gear shaft portion.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further including:
a protective shroud connected to said vertical first bracket portion of said pulley/gear transmission support bracket.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said drive member is a ring gear and wherein said power transmission assembly includes:
a longitudinal drive shaft assembly supported by the blade housing, wherein said longitudinal drive shaft assembly includes a geared end enmeshed with said ring gear, a shaft portion extending horizontally from said geared end, and a coupler end located at a distal end of said shaft portion, wherein said coupler end is connected to said trimmer blade unit, a bearing jacket jacketing said shaft portion of said longitudinal drive shaft assembly, and jacket-support brackets supporting said bearing jacket and supported by the blade housing.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said coupler end of said longitudinal drive shaft assembly includes a well portion and wherein said trimmer blade unit includes:
a blade, a rigid key-carrying portion connected to said blade, and a key portion received in said well portion of said longitudinal drive shaft assembly.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said rigid key-carrying portion includes external threads, further including a threaded lock nut, supported by said bearing jacket, for engaging said external threads of said rigid key-carrying portion of said trimmer blade unit for locking said longitudinal drive shaft assembly to said trimmer blade unit.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, further including:
a spring assembly, placed between said trimmer blade unit and said longitudinal drive shaft assembly, for urging said trimmer blade unit toward said longitudinal drive shaft assembly.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said trimmer blade unit includes:
a blade, a blade-retaining shaft supporting said blade, a shaft-bearing assembly supporting said blade-retaining shaft, a flexible power cable assembly connected to said blade-retaining shaft for connection to said longitudinal drive shaft assembly, and a hinged trimmer-unit-support assembly, connected to the lower housing wall of the blade housing, for supporting said shaft-bearing assembly.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said flexible power cable assembly includes:
a proximal end connected to said blade-retaining shaft, a flexible cable portion connected to said proximal end, and a key portion connected to said flexible cable portion, wherein said key portion is received in a well portion of said longitudinal drive shaft assembly.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the longitudinal length of a well portion of said shaft portion of said longitudinal drive shaft assembly is equal to or greater than the combined length of the key portion and the flexible cable portion of the flexible power cable assembly.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein said hinged trimmer-unit-support assembly includes:
a fixed support member connected to the lower housing wall of the blade housing, a movable support member that supports said shaft-bearing assembly, a hinge pin connecting said fixed support member and said movable support member together, whereby said movable support member can be rotated around said fixed support member, and an orientation lock, connected between said fixed support member and said movable support member, for locking said fixed support member and said movable support member at a selected angular orientation.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 13 further including auxiliary transmission means interposed between said ring gear and said geared end enmeshed with said ring gear.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said auxiliary transmission is operable between a first condition where said geared end is enmeshed with said ring gear and a second condition where said geared end is disengaged from said ring gear, said auxiliary transmission further including means for manually selecting between said first and second conditions.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said drive member is a friction wheel supported by the drive shaft and wherein said power transmission assembly includes:
a bracket assembly supported by the lower housing wall of the blade housing, a drive shaft supported by said bracket assembly, said drive shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, a trimmer unit supported on said lower housing wall by a bushing member, said bushing member being coupled to said distal end of said drive shaft and said drive member being coupled to said proximal end of said drive shaft.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 23 further including means for adjustably mounting said bracket assembly and said trimmer unit on said lower housing wall wherein said adjustment means includes means for adjusting the angular orientation of said bracket assembly, said trimmer unit, and said drive shaft relative to the rotation axis of said drive member.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24 wherein said adjustment means includes at least one longitudinally extending slot in said lower housing wall, wherein said bushing member extends through said at least longitudinally extending slot, and means for removably fastening said bracket assembly and said bushing to said lower housing wall.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 23 further including control means for selectively manually controlling the engagement of said drive member and said drive shaft, said control means being interposed between said proximal end of said drive shaft and said drive member.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein said control means includes a bearing block connected to said drive shaft, and a control cable connected to said bearing block wherein actuation of said cable is effective to move said bearing block between a first and a second position, and wherein in said first position said proximal end of said drive shaft is in engagement with said drive member and wherein in said second position said proximal end of said drive shaft is disengaged from said drive member.
- 28. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein said bracket assembly includes a first proximal portion, a second distal portion, and a third central portion extending between said first and second portions of said bracket assembly, a first cantilever bearing extending between said first proximal portion and said proximal end of said drive shaft, a second cantilever bearing extending between said second distal portion and said distal end of said drive shaft, and wherein said third central portion is affixed to said lower wall housing.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein said first and second cantilever bearings are rotatable relative to said third portion of said bracket assembly about respective axes parallel to but laterally spaced from the axis of said drive shaft.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 29 further including control means for selectively manually controlling the engagement of said drive member and said drive shaft, said control means being interposed between said proximal end of said drive shaft and said drive member,
wherein said control means includes a bearing block connected to said drive shaft, and a control cable connected to said bearing block wherein actuation of said cable is effective to move said bearing block between a first and a second position, and wherein in said first position said proximal end of said drive shaft is in engagement with said drive member and wherein in said second position said proximal end of said drive shaft is disengaged from said drive member, and wherein said bearing block coupled to said drive shaft causes said first and second cantilever bearings to rotate relative to their respective axes upon actuation of said control means between said first and second positions, respectively.
