Claims
- 1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
- a liquid crystal composition layer having twistable liquid crystal molecules;
- a first substrate and a second substrate having said liquid crystal composition layer disposed therebetween; and
- a video signal line formed between a face of said first substrate and a face of said liquid crystal composition layer, at least one pixel electrode and at least one counter electrode formed at each of pixels adjoining said video signal line,
- said at least one pixel electrode and said at least one counter electrode being formed on one of said first substrate and said second substrate for generating an electric field having a component predominately in parallel with said one of said first substrate and said second substrate,
- wherein one of said counter electrodes of the individual pixels is positioned adjacent to of said video signal line, and the one of said counter electrodes has a width which is at least equal to one half of the width of said video signal line.
- 2. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
- at least one insulating film formed between said pixel electrode and said counter electrode.
- 3. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 2, further comprising:
- at least one storage capacitor formed between said pixel electrode and said counter electrode using said at least one insulating film.
- 4. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said counter electrode is made of an anodizable metal so that the self-anodized film of said metal coats said counter electrode.
- 5. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said counter electrode is made of the same material as that of and formed on the same layer as that of a gate signal line having a surface made of an anodized metal layer.
- 6. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein the one of the counter electrodes has a width which is wider than one half of the width of said video signal line.
- 7. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal composition layer has a dielectric anisotropy of at least 7.3 in an absolute value.
- 8. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal composition layer has a positive dielectric anisotropy and a retardation more than 0.25 and less than 0.32.
- 9. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal composition layer has a negative dielectric anisotropy and a retardation more than 0.25 and less than 0.32.
- 10. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal composition layer has a positive dielectric anisotropy and a retardation more than 0.07 and less than 0.09.
- 11. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 1, wherein said liquid crystal composition layer has a negative dielectric anisotropy and a retardation more than 0.04 and less than 0.06.
- 12. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
- a liquid crystal layer made of twistable liquid crystal molecules;
- a first substrate and a second substrate sandwiching said liquid crystal layer therebetween at least one of which is transparent;
- at least a pair of a pixel electrode and a counter electrode formed in each of said pixels between the surface of said first substrate and the surface of said liquid crystal layer in order to control the twisting amounts of liquid crystal molecules of said liquid crystal layer by use of an electric field which is established between said pixel electrode and said counter electrode and has a component in parallel with said first substrate; and
- a video signal line, a scanning signal line and a switching element provided in each of said pixels between said first substrate and said liquid crystal layer to feed video signals to said pixel electrode through said video signal line, said scanning signal line and said switching element;
- wherein one of said counter electrodes of adjacent pixels are positioned on both sides of said video signal line, and widths of said counter electrodes in a lateral direction are not smaller than one-half the width of said video signal line.
- 13. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 12, wherein said counter electrode is fed with an AC voltage.
- 14. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 12, wherein the plurality of pixels arranged in the matrix shape are active matrixes.
- 15. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 14, wherein said active matrix is a thin film transistor matrix.
- 16. A liquid crystal display device as set forth in claim 12, further comprising:
- polarizing plates arranged on individual surfaces of said first substrate and said second substrate such that polarizing axes thereof intersect at a right angle with each other.
