Claims
- 1. A method for fabricating a fused glass block having an axial gradient index of refraction profile between two opposed parallel surfaces, with a change in refractive index from one of said surfaces to the other ranging from about 0.04 to 0.47, comprising stacking in a mold at least two layers of a chosen thickness, each layer having a thermal expansion coefficient that differs from the next plate by less than about 3.times.10.sup.-7 .degree.C..sup.-1, each layer having essentially no change in thermal expansion coefficient during diffusion, and said glass block having a smoothly varying refractive index profile from one of said surfaces to the other wherein one of said surfaces has a first composition and the other of said surfaces has a second and different composition, said first and said second compositions each selected from the following table of compositions, with the percent listed for each component variable by .+-.1% of the stated value:

- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one composition intermediate between said first and second compositions is interposed therebetween.
- 3. The method of claim 1 in which a refining agent consisting essentially of Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3 is employed for any of the compositions constituting glasses 0-5.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said refining agent is present in an amount of about 0.3 wt % of said composition.
- 5. The method of claim 1 in which a refining agent consisting essentially of As.sub.2 O.sub.3 is employed for any of the compositions constituting glasses 8-11.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said refining agent is present in an amount of about 0.3 wt % of said composition.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein each layer comprises a glass plate of a given composition.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein each layer comprises glass frit of a given composition and having an average particle size ranging from about 0.1 to 10 mm.
